How Green Becomes Wood

"Ooo, fun!" Alec sat down cross-legged on the floor. "Show me how to play?"

Xander came in sometime later and leaned on the wall, watching them curiously. He didn't make an effort to join, content to watch.

Daizi carefully tipped out the ice cube tray and then Dark began sorting the pieces. Once he started the action, Ivy followed along. Since Daizi couldn't see, she sorted by shape and feel only, and sometimes Ivy would sit back, clearly thinking as deeply as she could manage, before resorting what her mother had placed by colour too.

"You are so smart, Ivy!" Alec clapped for her happily. "Well done! You're doing really well. Isn't she, Xander?"

Xander nodded gravely. "She's doiing really well," he agreed.

Ivy grinned when she was clapped for, but only played the game for a little while longer before it got boring and she moved on to play with the activity cube she received for Christmas.

"It amazes me what little things can entertain a baby," Daizi chuckled, picking up the tray.

"I guess it makes sense when you remember everything is new and she knows nothing," Xander remakred. "We take shoelaces for granted. She's never seen it."

"I think it's a lot of fun and beautiful!" Alec smiled.

"She knows some things," Dark said, despite knowing exactly what Xander meant. He just felt like he should defend her.

"I want to let her try finger painting, your father is much more hesitant," Daizi said.

"She does now," Xander said mildly. "And she's learning stuff every day. It's a lot."

Alec gasped and clapped his hands. "Finger painting would be awesome! We should do that with her, absolutely! Ba, you can go elsewhere so you don't have to fret about it."

"We'll just throw down a tarp or some newspapers," Daizi said brightly, ruffling Ivy's hair, "Right, Habibi? Say, Baba, everything will be fine."

"Baba!" Ivy cooed happily, crawling into her father's lap.

"See!" Daizi laugh, "She told you!"

"Aw, Xander, you're not going to finger paint with your sister?" Daizi teased, "Don't you think it'll be fun?"

"I do not necessarily have an issue with it," Dark said, standing Ivy up in his lap and looking at her as he spoke, "I am well aware eventually she will need to make messes for her own growth and development. I simply believe there are some activities better saved for when we can do them outside."

"Eventually?" Xander repeated, amused, thinking of all the food that had ended up on the floor already and things getting pulled off of tables and shelves.

"But outside has wind and dirt and all sorts of stuff that makes paint outside annoying," Alec pointed out, making a face.

"I fear one day she will make worse messes than she already has," Dark told Xander solemnly, remembering the red stain still present in the twin's bedroom.

"The paints would be washable at least," Daizi said, leaning against Dark's shoulder.

Alec started to protest and then paused. "I suppose that is a good point," he agreed grudgingly.

"Unless she's a real vampire or something and doesn't actually live," Xander smirked.

"If she is a real vampire, I will be furious," Dark replied.

"Goose, baby, I love you, but if she is a real vampire, you are not allowed to ask her to bite you, that counts as cheating."

"That would be cruel on her part, I ask her for so little." Dark replied.

"If she'd agree to turn me, in a purely platonic bite on the wrist way, I'd turn you properly," Daizi promised him.

"This is too weird," Xander said, turning to leave, but he was still amused by it all.

"You're just jealous because you want to be a vampire!" Alec teased.

"Not really. Living forever sounds really depressing," Xander replied. "What about you?"

Alec snorted. "Have you ever seen a rainbow colored vampire? I think not! I'd rather be a magician or something like that."
