How Green Becomes Wood

Lex laughed and clapped her shoulder. "It's alright. I'm teasing you," she assured the other woman. "Never mind me. But since I've already dumped you into embarrassing territory, do you have a special someone?"

"It's good to be comfortable enough in your own skin to enjoy your own company," Lex nodded. "I mean, I enjoy being in a relationship, but I don't have to be in one, if you know what I mean. Pets?"

"No, not right now, but I've been thinking about getting a cat of my own," Lex told her. "My son will probably be out of the house soon, and it'd be nice to have some furry company, I think. I've never had a cat before as a pet."

"They're nice to have around and they're pretty low maintenance," She scratched behind her ear, "When I was younger I kept rabbits, and I love them, but they're much more expensive and harder to care for."

"They have a lot of attitude," Hetty replied, "and they're even more 'love you by their schedule' than cats. And they have a very destructive streak, so you have to be very careful about what they can access."

"I love them, but they're definitely not for everybody. And it's why so many get abandoned after Easter," She adjusted her glasses, "People tend to think little animals are just unilaterally easy to take care of."

"I think just... people don't always recognize that non-sapient animals aren't less valuable," Hetty said carefully, looking down at her shoes, "They're not objects just because they aren't us."

As she said this, servers at the restaurant came around to take orders for any drinks which were not already provided in big pitchers on the tables.

Lex turned away from Hetty, distracted, and ordered a sprite. After a few more words of casual conversation, she wandered away to mingle with some of the other guests and chat.

After all the drinks were brought out, the servers began to bring the pre-selected salad for everyone to enjoy while Dark sat down besides Daizi. Cooger, meanwhile, was chasing Ivy around the tables to entertain and exhaust her.

Lex sat near where Cooger was supposed to be sitting and watched him in amusement as he went round and round.

Alec had been talking to the teachers, but eventually got bored. He and Xander had finally holed up in a corner together to watch everyone else mingle and talk. Xander pounced on his salad eagerly, and Alec picked at it, not a fan of salads but trying.

Ivy couldn't run yet, even walking she was still unsteady, but she enjoyed being chased nonetheless, eventually toddling up to Xander and plopping her face in his lap, turning her face just so she could still keep an eye on Cooger.

Ivy giggled, lifting up her head and staring up at Xander.

"'Cause she knows if I catch her, I'm gonna tickle her," Cooger said, coming up and scooping up Ivy quickly enough to make her screech.
