How Green Becomes Wood

"We haven't been able to agree," Alec said morosely. "We're running out of time. I think it'll be a small thing, whatever it is, and we'll eat out, maybe. Beyond that..."

"I am not going to set foot in a photobooth, a glitter unicorn palace, or a dance competition," Xander said sternly.

"I don't like the smell of horses!" Alec huffed. "And leather. It's okay after a while, but it's so strong! And I'm not interested in ax-throwing or chainsaw carving!"

"Man it's hard to share a birthday," Sloan said sympathetically, "If you got the schedule right, do you think you could do two things? Like you do one thing in the morning and another in the afternoon?"

The twins glanced at each other and frowned.

"Hmm, that's not a bad idea," Xander said slowly.

"We could maybe do almost two seperate parties," Alec mused. "But somehow connected?"

"If you got two hotel rooms that have the connecting door, you could have two parties of different themes," Sloan suggested, "It's not a big event like last year when we all went to the arcade, just a normal party, but it'd let you both do things your own way."

"That's not a bad idea, I like that, but I'm not sure any neighbors will appreciate it," Alec giggled.

"Hmm. I have an idea," Xander remarked. He glanced at Sloan. "We'll talk about it later."

"Wow! Private!" Alec grinned.

"Mor like don't want to get any hopes up," Xander said.

"Felt like it, made it, it turned out good, thought I'd give it to you." He wiped off his fingers and dug around in his bag until he found a leather pouch. He opened it and tipped out the contents before handing said contents to Sloan. It was a bracelet made up of seven smaller, individual strings capped with a silver clasp, the type where a small bar went through a loop. Each of the seven strands was a little different. Flat braid, rounded braid, twisted, and different colors. A combination of blues and silvers made up the colors along with a couple of very pale natural leather strips.

"Thanks. It was just a practice piece," Xander shrugged.

"He's been working on the braiding of small leather pieces for a couple of months now," Alec told Sloan. "He tried making a braided belt with braided leather for Mama, but it didn't go well."

"Turns out, starting small is a good idea," Xander said.

"Just braiding, I can do. It's getting the leather to cooperate," Xander sighed. He glanced at Sloan. "Unless you know fancy braids that could work?"

The rest of the school day breezed by, and Alec split off from Xander a couple of times to walk with Emma when they were going in the same direction. Xander said nothing, but his expression grew a little darker whenever Alec did that and lightened when he returned.

When they arrived home, Alec charged in first. "I'm home! And Xander's here, too!"

"School was pretty good," Alec said, kicking off his shoes and touching the salt. He walked into the living room, following Dark's voice. "How was house?"

Xander followed Alec's lead, soon joining him in the living room.

"Hi, Ivy! Are you going to come say hi?" Alec coaxed, leaning over and holding out his arms.

Xander plunked their backpacks by the stairs and came to drop into the seat next to Dark. "I figured out our birthday plans," he stated. He picked up a shirt to fold. It was Dark's, but it looked like it might have possibly been stretched out. He hesitated over the piles. Dark or Daizi shirt?
