How Green Becomes Wood

"I suspected it would," Dark commented, "You are very fortunate to have transferable skills, it will help you in much of what you do."

"What kind of design is it? I can't wait to see it, since it's pottery and you couldn't have painted it yet, I should be able to feel the shape of it," Daizi commented.

"Mama!" Alec said severely. "What have we told you about torturing people? Especially Ba?"

"That she doesn't do it enough?" Xander asked.

Alec smacked him gently. "No, we're not supposed to torture people or threaten violence!"

"I'm not torturing anyone!" Daizi grinned, moving her feet further up underneath her husband's shirt.

"How is it even possible for your feet to get this cold?" Dark asked.

"Genetics, She said innocently, "Women tend to keep heat in our cores rather than at our extremities, it's not my fault."

"Alright, I'm out," Xander said, shaking his head at them.

"Sorry, Ba. You're on your own! I can only imagine the torture she'd put us through if we tried to interfere," Alec giggled, following Xander out of the room.

Dark grumbled to himself, but didn't move away. It delighted his wife and the cold didn't last long anyway. Daizi, meanwhile, was content to stay right there until Ivy woke up from her nap.

Sunday came slowly or quickly, depending on who you asked, and it was time for the twins' birthday party! Becky, Emma, Milo, Austin, Sloan, and Peter had all said yes to coming. Tom had been asked, but, as Alec had predicted, couldn't come, though he did sound very regretful about it. Their party was set up in a long, narrow room with Alec-focused decor on one side, and Xander-focused decor on the other. Alec had face painting and easals set up for drawing, painting, or whatever other art people might want to do. Xander had a toy version of ax throwing on his side (No one would agree to real axes in the space) and Catch Phrase. In the center of the room, there was a small karaoke machine for kids and a nail polish spin game as well as so much food!

Austin came in first, dressed neatly in his jeans and flannel shirt, bearing two small gift bags. He looked uncertain and a little embaressed to be there. He hesitated when he saw Dark and Daizi, but rallied and stepped forward to pay his respects before going to join Xander at the ax throwing. Peter and Emma showed up together, and Emma went to Alec first before saying hello to Dark and Daizi, then going back to Alec. Peter said hello to Dark and Daizi first, striking up a conversation until Becky arrived and greeted them excitedly and ran to hug Alec.

The morning of the twins' birthday, Dark and Daizi had added a few decorations to the inside of the house. It wasn't necessary, of course, but they thought they might like to see them as soon as they woke up in the morning. Although, yes, they had only been the twins' parents for two years, they still couldn't believe their children were seventeen. It seemed so much older!

At the party itself, they had brought a small baby pen so Ivy have a more contained, quiet space for her, since the new, bright, likely loud environment had a high chance of being overstimulating for her, and since she was going to be there for so long, it only made sense to provide her with a space where she had her toys and some sense of familiarity. Although after it was established... Dark realized it did kind of look like a a petting zoo. And this... Well, he couldn't deny it made him laugh, so he took one of the pages Alec had set up on the easels and quickly made a sign which said as much, including a warning about how she may bite. Of course, Ivy wouldn't be forced to stay in her enclosure.

They had also set up a small gift table for the ease of the guests, and waited to greet their sons' friends as they came in. As always, Daizi was much warmer than her husband, although he did seriously try not to be cold. Unless it was requested otherwise, neither of them tried to hide their alternative fashion senses, but they did make a pointed effort to dress down a little bit purely to not "outshine" their sons, or at least not Alec. It was their birthday, they deserved to look the best.

Milo arrived without being the last one there, for once, and he first took a few photographs of the venue itself before saying hello to Dark, Daizi, and Ivy before greeting Alec and then going over to Xander to congratulate him. "Happy Birthday," he said, looking around the space, "The party is really cool. I like the, uh, split theme. It's neat. And the petting zoo made me laugh."

Xander was dressed in his usual black pants and overshirt, but he'd chosen to layer with a deep red undershirt with a subtle silver decal, silver dangling earrings and red studs, a leather belt of his own design with a silver buckle, and heavy boots. It was possibly the fanciest he'd dressed outside of the vow renewal in years. He turned to see Milo and nodded in greeting. "Hey. Glad to see you made it safe. Yeah, we had to put the wild animal in a cage to keep everyone safe."

"Hey, Milo!" Peter greeted him when he came over. "How's it going?"

Alec was in a near rainbow of color, but they were all solids, no patterns. He wanted color and vibrancy! He'd even used a liquid gold eyeshadow, but that was the wildest thing about his makeup. He'd kept the rest reasonable, but not too toned down. Emma had clearly not been thrilled, but, for once, kept her thoughts to herself and just hugged him and told him happy birthday. Alec grinned broadly, pleased and excited for everything to come that day.

Becky put her gift on the table and went to Ivy's pen, squealing at how cute she was and babbling happily at her. She did keep her hands to herself and gave Ivy her space even if she did want to touch her precious hair! She was so cute!

"I'll be careful not to fall in, I want to leave here with both my arms," Milo joked, glancing around some more, really impressed by everything. "Oh, hey, uh hey Peter, I'm okay. It's weird that it's February already."

Ivy was somewhat interested in Becky, but mostly she was staring with wonderment at the balloons. There was so much happening, but nothing was quite as amazing as the floating thing tied to her pen.

Sloan joined the party, setting four gifts down on the table, and then went to greet Alec first since it looked like Xander was in the middle of a conversation, "Happy birthday, you look awesome! How does it feel to be seventeen?"

"It felt like January would never end for me, and then, bam! It's February," Peter chuckled. He turned to Xander and pretended to doff an invisible hat. "Happy birthday, old chap! Welcome to another year of life!"

"Thanks, that's incredible," Xander drawled. "I'm looking forward to another year of getting stuck with you lot."

Peter laughed. "I know, it's torturous. I should go bug your brother before you attack me with those plastic axes."

Alec smiled brightly at Sloan, Emma standing slightly behind and beside him. "Hi, Sloan! Thanks! It feels so very tiring, like I've been through seventeen years of life! It really is a rough deal, living, you know?"

"And February is the shortest month, so, you know. It'll be March soon." He looked back at Xander, rubbing his arm, "We've been friends for a whole year. That's pretty cool."

"Try being eighteen," Sloan teased, and then made a face, "God I turn nineteen this year. I'm practically ancient. But it'll be a good year for you, I bet! I mean, this is one way to kick it off, right?" She nodded to Emma, because it'd be rude not to, "It's good to see you."

Xander paused to think about that. "Damn. That's true. We have been friends a whole year. The longest I've ever had a friend. Well, Sloan came first, but we weren't exactly best friends right off."

"True! You'll be absolutely old!" Alec cackled. "You poor thing. Enjoy your youth while you can!"

Emma nudged him gently. "Don't tease a lady about her age," she whispered. She smiled at Sloan and nodded formally. "Nice to see you, too, Sloan."

"Alright, you're right," Alec agreed goodnaturedly, in too good of a mood to be too concerned.

"Longest friend I've had too," Milo nodded, "At least, since I started moving around all the time. I, um, your gift, I put it on the table."

"I'm going to, that's why I'm training so hard, I'll have to retire by the time I'm thirty, probably sooner," Sloan grinned, "I'm making the absolute most out of my youth. Looking around here, though, what on earth are you going to do next year to top this?"

"Really? Thanks. I didn't expect anything," Xander said. "Appreciate it. We're either opening them at the end... or when we head home, not in front of everyone. I forget." He indicated the ax throwing target where Austin was already fiddling with an ax and testing it. "Want to try it out?"

"No idea!" Alec said cheerfully. "We can't keep topping ourselves or else it's going to get just plain silly, but maybe some kind of flower arranging class. Or indoor horseback riding."

Peter came over then and gently nudged Sloan as if trying to push her aside. "Quit hogging the birthday fellow, Applebaum! Give the rest of us a chance to say hello."

"My grandparents gave me money for it," Milo explained, "and uh, yeah. I can try it. I don't think I'll be much good, but..." He shrugged, "At least I can't hurt myself or anyone else since the axes aren't real."

"Flower arranging or indoor horseback riding are two very different options," Sloan laughed and then turned to roll her eyes teasingly at Peter, "Last I checked, you were already here when I showed up, so there was no way for me to know you hadn't already said hello."

"I dunno," Xander said, walking over to the little station with Milo. "I bet you could if you tried hard enough."

Austin looked over and nodded to them both as he moved over to give them ample room. "Hey, Milo. Xander. You want to take over?"

"Stick around," Xander told Austin. "Let's see who throws it best."

"Okay," Austin said. "There's only two colors, red and blue."

"We can go one at a time," Xander said. He picked up the blue set, all five little "axes" worth and weighed them in his hands. "I claim going first as my birthday privilege. What about you two?"

"Could I go last?" Austin asked Milo.

~~

"Well, that's hardly any excuse!" Peter teased Sloan. "You should have magically known. Anyway, happy birthday, Alec!"

"Thanks, Peter!" Alec chirped. "Thanks for coming!"

"Uh, yeah, sure," Milo murmured to Austin, "I don't mind." Then he sat back to watch how Xander did it, trying to figure out the technique since he had never really been much of an athlete.

~~

"You should have magically said hello," Sloan teased, her hands in her back pockets.

Xand tossed the ax a couple of times, testing it curiously. He'd never been real ax-throwing, but the idea appealed to him. He doubted these plastic things were anything like the real thing, but he was decent at throwing and had good aim. He drew back his arm and let fly. The ax hit the target but bounced off and pinwheeled to the side. "At least it hit," he said. "Does that count?"

Austin shrugged. "Half point?"

"Sure, that works for me," Xander agreed. His next four also hit the target. None were bullseyes, and two bounced off, but the other two stuck in the weird board. "Your turn, Stitch."

~~

"I'll remember that for next time," Peter assured Sloan with a smirk. "So, Alec, are you going to still hang out with me even though I'm older?"

"I suppose, maybe, I might," Alec drawled. "Might as well. After all, Sloan still graces us with her presence."

"I think it's desperation," Peter said in a stage whisper.

Becky came bouncing over, catching Sloan's arm in her excitement. "Who wants to get their faces painted?"
