How Green Becomes Wood

The kitten made a little "mmrrpp?" of surprise at the new touch and looked up, blinking sleepily. She looked at Ivy in equal curiosity. Yes? Smaller human? What did you desire?

"Gently Ivy," Daizi murmured, realizing what was happening, "Two fingers, remember?" Carefully taking Ivy's hand in hers, she helped her baby to very softly pet the kitten, "She's just a baby too, habibti. She's a baby like sweet Ivy-Qadira."

Finally actually petting the cat, Ivy made a delighted squeak, but one she tried to keep quiet since she was able to recognize how quietly her Mama was speaking. Her big eyes shone and it was clear her brain didn't quite know what to do, because her Mama was making her be gentle and careful but this was so exciting. Daizi held Ivy carefully enough to be absolutely certain she'd be able to move her hand away if her excitement got the better of her, the kitten was in absolutely no danger of being pet too roughly.

The kitten pulled back at first, unsure about what was happening with all of this hand thing happening, but when Ivy petted her nice and soft, she allowed it to happen for a bit. Then curiosity got the better of the cat, and she started sniffing around Ivy's hand. She gave the fingers an experimental lick and the tiniest of nibbles, not even biting, more like touching her teeth lightly to Ivy's skin. Nope. Not edible. She stood and arched her back with a massive yawn before stepping carefully toward Ivy, wanting to investigate the new human.

When the kitten nibbled and licked her, Ivy pulled her hand back in surprise. That was a new sensation, and not one she had time to really figure out if she liked or not before it was over. But the kitten's big yawn made her grin again and Daizi murmured to both of them that they were being very good. When the kitten came closer, Ivy moved her face closer towards her, blinking curiously and giggling.

The kitten stared at Ivy with huge eyes. Her whiskers flared as she sniffed at Ivy. Then she reached out with one paw and delicately tapped Ivy's nose. What was this? Why did it make such strange noises? Was it a friend, or a play thing?

The kitten reared back in shock and blinked, highly confused. She didn't get tapped. She tapped other things! Then her face wrinkled up, and she sneezed so hard she almost fell off Daizi's chest.

Ivy laughed again at the cat sneezing while Daizi, feeling the instability of the kitten, reached up with one hand to steady her, doing her best not to laugh at this adorable display. With one finger, she scratched the kitten underneath her chin, "You are being so patient, habibti. Ivy is just a baby, like you are." Curiously, Ivy stretched upwards and, with the gentleness her mother kept demonstrating, pet the kitten's little head.

The kitten leaned into the scratches, purring happily. Then it wobbled toward Ivy and tried again to pat her face. She missed a couple of time but managed to put its paw on her chin. It froze there for a moment, seeming at a loss. Okay, it had patted. Now what? It decided to let it go and turn instead toward the hand that created nice pets. Pets were always appreciated!

Ivy continued petting the cat in rapt delight. This thing was so soft! And it made such silly noises! It was so good to pet!

Cooger glanced down at Alec, "I don't think you'll have any trouble with them two. The introduction seems pretty well sorted."

The kitten settled down again near Ivy and more or less on Daizi's shoulder. This was a good spot! Great for naps.

Alec smiled, practically vibrating from happiness. "They look really cute together, don't they?"

On Daizi's shoulder, the kitten was higher up than Ivy, so she snuggled back in against her mom and turned her face upwards, trying to reach up to pet the kitten more, but also feeling really glad to be back home, on her couch, next to her Mama.

"I think they'll be real good friends," Cooger said.

"I love that thought," Alec said, giving Cooger a one-armed hug without thinking. "I love it so much! I can't wait to see what all we learn together and see together. I wonder if I can teach her to walk on a leash?"

"You might be able to, depending on how her personality develops. You just have to be really cautious about it." Cooger replied, "Sometimes people try to leash train their cats, then they end up with a cat who tries to dart out the front door every time it's opened."

Alec nodded, taking the advice seriously. "I will be very, very careful. We'll have tons on in-the-house training before we ever open the door, and I'll read and watch everything I can about it. I do know it's all about the positive experience!"

"We'll have to see if she likes it when the time comes," Cooger replied simply. He knew dozens of owners who said they'd leash train their cats and their cats hated it. "She needs a name before you get her outside."
