How Green Becomes Wood

"I brought over some of the things she liked from the cabin," Cooger said, "They're in a box outside your door. I took the liberty of setting up the litter boxes for you. Like I said, for your birthday I'll buy whatever else you need, like new toys, a new bed, the works."

"Thanks, Uncle Cooger," Alec said sincerely. "Thank you so much. I'll make a list of everything and figure out what she might like. And I might like, considering I don't think she cares about aesthetics."

"I'll talk to Lex about it," Alec said. He walked over to his mother and held out his hands. "Can I have my kitty back, please?" he asked plaintively, willing to scoop her up but not without Daizi's permission. "I want to take her upstairs to our room."

"Of course you can," Daizi replied, gently scooping the kitten and handing her to Alec, being extremely cautious so as to not disturb Ivy, who was sleeping hard against her shoulder, "I didn't intend to keep her from you, she just stayed really snuggled in."

"I know. And she was so incredibly cute," Alec told her, accepting the cat with care. "Thank you, Mama. For everything." He paused, looking at the drowsy kitten cuddled up to his chest. "Hmm. You know a really pretty name? Aria!"

Alec caught that and looked between them suspiciously. "What?" he demanded. The kitten let out a questioning mew as if echoing his curiosity. "What's wrong with Aria?"

"I'm betting an ex," Xander smirked.

"They were together for like half a year!" Cooger exclaimed while Dark rolled his eyes. "And how many times did you break up with her?"

"I do not think it matters." Dark said blandly.

Cooger turned to his children, "They were like a light switch. Sometimes he would tell me they broke up before I even knew they had gotten back together again!"

"You're joking," Xander said in amusement, staring at Dark.

"How did you manage?" Alec gasped, gaping at him. "That sounds so exhausting and emotional!"

"So, how did you manage to finally get off the switch?" Xander asked.

"Yeah, right, like he'd be in any headspace to take in a couple of teens," Xander drawled.

Alec giggled and shook his head before heading toward the stairs. "There was no choice. No option. You two were always meant to be together."

"That is what I have always said," Daizi said elegantly with a wave of her hand, as though a toddler were not currently drooling on her. There were certain indignities in being beyond their wild, dramatic years to find themselves parents.

"He might've still taken you in," Cooger grinned, "I don't know how great a dad he would've been, but he might've taken you in. And eventually ran off with Tarot anyway."

"And abandoned us with some random lady," Xander smirked.

Alec made his way upstairs to his room and let himself in, stepping over the box of supplies for his new kitten as he did so. He set the kitten on his bed, which woke her up some, and she started sniffing about with interest. While she was distracted, Alec moved the box into his room and closed the door. He'd let her go wherever she wanted soon, but for now, he wanted her contained and where he knew where she was. While the kitten explored the bed, he started exploring the things in the box and setting them out.
