How Green Becomes Wood

"Not right now, no, thank you." Dark answered, following Susan.

After they arrived to the starting place, though, Daizi paused for a monent and asked, "What are the bottles with the scents made of?"

"Thick walled glass," Susan informed her. "Here we have an assortment of scents. They are arranged alphabetically for ease of remembering what is where. There are a few pots here of coffee grounds to cleanse the palette. Take your time testing all the scents here, and when you are ready, pick out as many scents as you like, but I wouldn't suggest doing more than four to six."

"Okay..." Daizi nodded, trusting she could probably handle them without a strongly scented calamity without incident, once she got the hang of it. Then she turned to her friends and husband again, "How should we handle the perfumes? It might be nice if we make the sent for our respective spouse, I was thinking."

"Oh, that would be lovely!" Sally agreed. "Jack, why don't you and Ghalib join together for a bit while Daizi and I work together, and we'll each make one for each other as she suggested?"

"I'm game," Jack agreed, looking to Dark to see what he'd say.

"Far be it from me to seperate our wives from one of their dearest friends," Dark said while Daizi squeezed his arm once before letting him go.

"It'll be fun," Daizi said, "so long as Sally doesn't let me break open one of these bottles."

"I will do my best!" Sally promised and happily led Daizi toward a selection of floral scents.

Jack stood looking at the bottles. "I can't say I have the first idea where to begin," he admitted. "I normally don't like most 'manly' scents, or, at least, what half the country seems to think is manly. Where do you suggest?"

"It's really a delicate balance isn't it?" Daizi mused, "We have to pick one we like and one which we think they will like, but not one which is too similar to what they already wear."

Dark looked at Jack for a moment, then glanced over his shoulder at their wives, "Is the assignment we craft one for them to wear, or one we will wear to please them?"

"Jack wears exactly two cologns, both of which were gifted to him at some point, and he decided he liked them," Sally giggled. "It will be a bit fun to push him just a little bit from his comfort zone. But it cannot be too strong. I think no more than three scents will do for him."

Jack reconsidered what Daizi and Sally had said. "I am not sure, but I think it is one for them to wear." He paused. "Do women tend to wear scents other than flowers?"

"It might be easier for you, then," Daizi said, turning her head to the side, "Dark wears a huge variety of scents, it's really how he dresses up for me. That and tactile patterns. He has this one lace shirt..."

"That was my interpretation as well," Dark replied, "Daizi will wear florals, but she gravitates to spicier scents, and amber. She loves the scent of amber. Some women prefer a fruitier scent, but they appeal less to her. I suppose a starting place is if you wished to make a day or night scent."

"Oh, does he, now?" Sally said teasingly. "A lovely lace shirt, is it?"

Jack considered. "Sally wears very soft scents. It might be amusing to get her something a little spicier. Let's see, where is amber." He looked around until he found the scent and gave it a sniff. "Not bad!"

"It's another reason I need winter to hurry up and end," Daizi sighed.

"It is usually some mixture of vanilla and labdanum, sometimes patchouli and some other scent I am forgetting," Dark explained, feeling a bit like he did at the flower shop, except without being constantly hit on, "If Sally usually wears soft scents, she may enjoy being surprised with something more suited for the evening."

Sally laughed at that. "I'm sure you do! Although, there is so many more fuzzy things one can wear in the winter. I am drawn to the fuzz."

"You know your perfumes well," Jack said in appreciation. "Is it because of Daizi's visual issues? The scent is more," he paused, considering his words, "effective than wearing specific clothing?'

"I like some fuzzy fabrics, but some feel horrible against my fingers," Daizi said, "anyway, my husband isn't really a 'fuzzy' man."

"Yes," He answered, picking up one of the bottles and smelling it, "I cannot impress her with what I wear, especially not at a distance. With the exception of utilizing on unique textures or tactile elements, I really can only dress for myself. But she picks up on the nuances of scent better than anyone I know, so I use different colognes or perfumes instead. I do not mind wearing ones marketed to women if it pleases her."

Sally started to make a comment about "fuzzy men," but changed her mind and said instead, "This is going to be very difficult then. Hmm. What are some scents, then, that you normally do not show particular attention to? Perhaps that is a place to start, since what he wears, he wears for you."

Jack nodded along. "That makes sense. I don't know that anything I wear impresses Sally as long as it is event-appropriate." He paused and sniffed some patchouli before wrinkling his nose. "Can't say I'm a fan of that one. Maybe something citrusy."

"Hmmm..." Daizi hummed, thinking about it, "I don't like very sweet. Or very clean scents---I don't like fresh cotton, linen, those sorts. I always think Dark already smells a little bit, the faintest, tiniest bit, like cotton candy, even though everyone else thinks I'm mental for saying so. If I put him in something sweet, then it masks it. And it doesn't suit him."

"I like patchouli personally," Dark said, "Citrus can be nice. It is very summery."

"Hmm, yes, I can see the problem. How about something very light and gentle, like a touch of lemon or rose? You know, there's a perfume made by, hmm, I can't recall the name, but it was in their basic scent line, and it was called skin!" She giggled at that. "At least someone enjoys the absolute basics."

"Really? Feels like it's going to burn my nose, but maybe my nose is wired strangely," Jack said cheerfully. "Hmm. Orange and cinnamon. I like that together. Too Christmasy?"

"I was considering putting rose for him. I don't know about lemon, though... I think he cleans so often, I don't want him to smell like a cleaning product," She laughed.

"Everyone has their preferences," Dark replied, "I do not think orange and cinnamon is too reminiscent of Christmas unless you add pine too it. You can likely add a richer floral to further distance it."

"Oh, good point," Sally agreed. "What about... Lotus and vanilla? With rose petal?"

"That's a good idea," Jack agreed. "Let's see... A floral scent that doesn't smell like flowers crushed in sugar... Any suggestions?" He looked through the bottles as he asked, looking at each one with interest.

"Maybe..." Daizi said, sniffing them and carefully considering her options, "Have you thought about what you might like for Jack?"

"Freesia might be nice," Dark suggested, sniffing the bottle for a second before handing it to Jack, "or tuberose."

"I am thinking of going floral with him. He hates things like pine and cedar and sandlewood," Sally said. "Something striking!"

"One of those sounds like a cleaning product, and the other like so.e sort of disease," Jack remarked. After some consideration, he chose the freesia. "This should be nice. What about you?"
