How Green Becomes Wood

Although Ivy was happy to see her brother, since she had been having a fussy day, she was definitely much more clingy with her parents and didn't show much interest in playtime.

After the twins went upstairs, Dark settled in besides Daizi and gave her his account of the days events, including the parts he had left out both when explaining to Tristan and to Alec, like the threat he had received and the racism.

The next day, the twins went to school like usual. As they walked through the hall, Xander was telling Milo about something he was working on with his therapy horse, and Alec was telling Sloan a toned down version of what had happened at the shop the day before.

Peter came trotting up, waving to them for attention. "Finally caught up to you! I was thinking I might have wait until lunch. Milo, I've got something for you. As soon as I remember where I put it..." He started checking his pockets.

Sloan reacted in shock but she tried to downplay it so she didn't catch the attention of any strangers. "I always forget you technically have other blood relatives."

Milo stared at Peter in shock, "...For me? Why?"

"Honestly? Me too," Alec admitted. "If the others are anything like him, I'm quite happy to leave it that way."

"Hang on." Peter reached into the vest he was wearing and brightened in a smile. "Found it!" He pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to Milo. "My grandparents didn't know what to get me, so they had my cousins buy me a bunch of digital games. Unfortunately, they got me several I already have. You have a Steam deck, right? I thought you could use the digital codes for my doubles."

"Yeah, I don't blame you," Sloan agreed, "at least now you're like... fully adopted, so if you happen to meet them, they can't try anything."

Milo blinked at Peter in surprise, "That'd be really cool. Thanks."

"Absolutely!" Alec said cheerfully. "It's such a relief. I'm so glad my dad could step in when he did."

"Sure thing! I just really didn't want them to go to waste. I think these are all ones you'd like, but no worries if you don't," Peter told him.

Becky came skipping over. "High, guys! Sloan, looking fabulous as always. Alec, can I borrow you? I need a second opinion on this poster I'm making. Hi, Milo!" As she had done every single school day, she handed Milo a couple of pieces of candy. This time, taffy.

"Sure, Becky, just one minute," Alec told her.

Becky nodded. "I'll meet you at my locker." She skipped away.

Alec looked to Sloan to make sure it was all right before following after Becky.

Xander looked at Milo quizzically.

"Yeah I can imagine," Sloan replied, crossing her arms, "That's the benefit of having a dad like that I think. My dad wouldn't have been as successful."

Milo thanked Becky, confused, and looked after her, then down at the candy down in his hand, "I think she's trying to destroy my teeth."

"Maybe not, but I bet he'd find a different way to help," Alec grinned. "I should go help Becky out. Later!" He waved and worked his way over to Becky's locker.

"I think so," Xander said, frowning. "It's weird, but this reminds me of something. I'm not sure what."

"If she gives me every time she sees me, it'll make my brain associate her with good things, and that'll make me excited to see her." Milo explained, holding the taffy between two fingers, "I'm Pavlov's dog."

Sloan put one hand over her mouth and tried not to laugh when she made eye contact with Xander. If Milo was right, Becky was being very clever.

"Pavlov," Milo corrected, "He was a Russian scientist who trained dogs to salivate every time he rang a bell."

"It's kind of evil in the kindest way," Sloan said, "I don't know if I should be impressed or doubt my entire friendship with her."

"Both," Xander stated. "I'll never fully trust her again, but in an admiring way." Then he smirked at Milo and said, "We're going to be late for class if we don't hurry. Heel, Milo."

Xander snickered.

"You guys are odd," Peter said, smiling in amusement at them. "I wouldn't have it any other way."

"Good!" Xander snorted.

Alec caught up to them, panting, just before they reached the classroom.
