How Green Becomes Wood

"Thirty one if your sister gets one," Daizi added, "Either way, I am sure she will be very grateful you thought of her. I once baked cookies for a friend of mine after his mother died, and that recipe made way more than I expected, so I gave him a comically large amount of cookies, even after keeping a third of them for here."

"He's usually in the living room if he's with Ivy, because that's where she's kept during the day. It's funny how you call for us all the time when we're usually always in the same places," Daizi said, leaning against the counter. After a few moments she said, "It's okay if you are worried about her, by the way."

"It gives you the chance to pretend you're not there and can't hear us if you don't want to eat a cupcake or something," Xander told her. He paused at her statement. He looked away and played with the edge of the plate. "I'm sure she'll be fine. It's just a bump."

"Yeah." Xander cleared his throat and started walking toward the living room. "Anyway, I'm going to go torture Ba with sweet things."

Alec went over to Daizi and hugged her. "Thanks, Mama," he said quietly."

In the living room, Dark was helping Ivy to ride on her rocking horse. She was doing much better at balancing on it, but he still sat beside the contraption, just in case she tipped over. He looked up at Xander when he entered the room and nodded lightly to him.

Daizi hugged Alec back, smoothing his hair, "You're welcome, habibi. I know it's stressful."

"Sup, Mini. How are you doing on that little horse?" Xander asked her casually. He held up the plate. "I brought you and Ba a cupcake. You want one?"

Alec heaved a sigh. "How do you deal with the worry so calmly?"

Ivy's eyes widened at the sight of the cupcakes and held out her hands, making tiny squeak noises.

"Ivy, you have to ask nicely," Dark told her, "Can you say please?"

Rocking Alec slightly, Daizi said, "I don't think I do always deal with it calmly. I might wait to panic until it's just me and Dark, though."

Xander smiled at Ivy. "You gotta ask nicely. Watch Ba." He turned to his father. "Ba, would you like a cupcake?"

"That's fair," Alec agreed, hugging her. He let go and straightened a bit. "I think I'm going to go see what Kiki is up to. If she's alseep, I should leave her alone, but maybe I can teach her a trick."

Dark, who did not really want a cupcake, still said, "I would love to have a cupcake, please," so he could try and model good behaviour for his daughter.

"You go take care of yourself, Alec, it's been a stressful day," Daizi told him.

Xander did not show on his face his glee. Dark had fallen right into his hands! He kept his expression perfectly still as he offered Dark a cupcake. "There you go! Mini? Do you have something to say?"

"You, too, Mama, thank you," Alec said with a smile. He headed to his room and found Kiki sleeping on his bed. He laid down with great care next to her. She yawned, stretched, and snuggled up into his side. He smiled and curled around her. She was so comforting.

"Thank you for the cupcake, Xander," Dark said, feeling like he had been played. For her part, Ivy really did try her best to do what was being asked of her, but she couldn't get out the words.

"You're very welcome," Daizi told Alec before going to the living room to check in with her other family members.

"You're welcome," Xander gravely told his father. He waited until I y got close enough to almost be a recognizable work and handed her a cupcake. "Here you go, Mini. Good try."

"Am I able to deconstruct this?" Dark asked, looking at the cupcake, "I prefer to flip the frosting upside-down."

Ivy, meanwhile, squealed in delight, and while Dark encouraged her to say thank you, she immediately set about demolishing the treat.

"I think you'll make a mess either way," Daizi said as she entered the living room.

"I wouldn't suggest you deconstruct it," Xander replied. "It won't end well if you try."

Dark had gotten a lemon pudding filled one. It was a nice, tart lemon flavor, not too sweet and not too overbearing.

Dark sighed, "Let me go get a napkin at least. And Ivy needs one too." After retrieving a napkin, he bit into the cupcake as delicately as he could, although it was not the ideal dessert for someone with his facial hair. Admittedly, the texture was better than he had been imagining, and the lemon flavor was nice.

"It is not how I imagined it would be," Dark admitted, "The lemon is nice."
