She shook her head, "They never really broke the skin. They're just a weapon. I've had so many sports injuries, but nothing feels like your ankles being smashed by your scooter."
"Wow. That sounds like a real menace," Xander said, shaking his head. "I never did that, and now I really don't want to. I mean, I'm all for dangerous play, but that sounds like the worst."
"I can't tell if you're teasing me," Sloan replied, with a little grin, "We can't all have cool and mysterious origin stories. Some of us just grow up in the suburbs."
"Okay, first of all, I'm pretty sure that if you used one more than once, you would have demolished your ankles too," Sloan replied, "Literally everybody I know who had one experienced the same thing. It's a design flaw or something."
"It's because they swing! The flat part you stand on swivels in a full circle from the pole the handles are attached too!" Sloan explained, "So sometimes when you're going somewhere or trying to hop onto a curb, the flat part spins around and tries to take you out!"
"I wonder if she'll want to do that. Might since it's fast. Could be a lot of fun for her," Xander mused. "Maybe I'll have to make her some ankle pads. Or not so she'll maybe learn how to not smack her ankles."
"What do you think is the likelihood you would've agreed to wear anklepads?" Sloan asked, "She'll probably ride that scooter without a helmet and think she can really get somewhere on it."
"True enough, but I'll believe Ba letting her out of his sight at six-seven years old on a wheeled device when I see it," Xander chuckled. "The man is like a bodyguard."
"It's better than being ignored," Sloan pointed out, "but even if it doesn't happen at six or seven, wait until she's ten or eleven. At some point he'll trust her."
"I think the more everyone hovers, the more compelled she'll feel to try to break the rules," Sloan said, "but it's nice she's got so many people looking after her. Even though at some point you have to give her space to get tough."
"I do not hover," Xander sniffed. "And, trust me, she'll have plenty of space to get tough. With a helmet. I won't care about elbow or knee pads, but I bet she'll want them after a couple of good cracks, and she can wander off all she wants to try out new stunts. With a helmet."
