How Green Becomes Wood

"Yeah, yeah, it's fine," Alec hurriedly assured him. "I was just thinking about the future and all that entails and trying to balance preparing for the future while enjoying childhood."

"You are not planning to propose straight out of high school, yes?" Dark asked. No part of him suspected this to be the case, of course, and he supposed he was really only teasing, but he also knew Emma had very exacting timelines.

"No, absolutely not," Alec said flatly. "I know I am quite dramatic and tend to leap a few times before looking, but even I have limits! I have no intention of anything like that. It is possible I might propose during college, maybe, I'd keep that open, but not until the second year at least. No worries there."

"That is good," Dark sighed, relieved for the confirmation, "I do my best to trust your judgment on many things, but..." He sat up right, sat his gear down, and looked at his son, "Have you decided you would like to attend college?"

Alec smirked a little at the 'but,' but his smile faded again at the question. "Yes, I think so," he said a bit hesitantly. But, had he decided? Somewhere along the way, it had just seemed that it was going to happen. He was going to go to college because... why? He was not actually certain. No, it wasn't him who'd decided. Emma had said it. Not as a question, but as a statement. Not that she'd stated what he was supposed to study, just that he was going to go.

Alec hesitantly named Emma's two favorite colleges, both of which were very good, but not close to home. "I have heard some very good things about them, but they are a long way away. I haven't really decided much of anything there."

Alec hesitated a moment before saying as casually as he could, "Emma thinks it's a good idea for career furtheration. Even if you don't use your exact degree, you learn how to learn and have a very expensive piece of paper to hang on the wall. Things like that."

Dark nodded slowly as he listened, looking down at the gear in his hands, "In a way she is correct. Although I usually recommend community college to start, if your initial goals are to learn how to learn and acquire a nice piece of paper for your wall. I cannot praise community college enough."

"It might be a better way to go," Alec agreed soberly, "but I still have not officially decided anything... for myself. So, we'll see. I don't really like the idea of being stuck somewhere else for an entire year and only getting to come home for holidays and such. That sounds like absolute misery." He finished off his gear and set it down. "I should probably go see what Xander's up to. He'll deny it, but he'll be curious about what I did to my nails."
