How Green Becomes Wood

"Yikes. Long road trip," Xander winced. "Nah, not right now. I think there's one coming up in... a couple of weeks? Next month? Something like that. Peter would know. He goes to pretty much all of them."

"Sure," Xander nodded. "I dunno if I will. It's good for learning, but I don't really like it." He shrugged. "Gotta decide if I'm happy never growing in this sport, or gotta push through something I hate doing."

"That's a really difficult decision," Sloan said. Although she liked competing, the question of if she was going to keep climbing higher or if she was comfortable at her level was one which had bothered her periodically throughout all her life. It was one she had seen most members of her team struggle with at one point or another, before ultimately many of them quit. "For me, it's always come back to just how much I love the sport, and how much progression in it means to you."

Xander nodded, taking her words seriously. "It's something to consider," he agreed. "Thing is, I'm not sure I care that much about the sport. This sport specifically, I mean. But I do like the movement and stuff. The purpose."

"Movement with an element of competition," Xander said without hesitation. "There's plenty of other styles, but it feels weird to leave the one I've already put so much effort into." That, and so far, all the ones he'd found with classes offered near him were all essentially the same with the same pros and cons. Details were different, big picture was the same.

"I mean I think most sports include movement and a sense of competition," Sloan replied, a bit confused, "But you haven't really done it for that long. At least not comparatively, you wouldn't be the first one to make a switch."

"Yes, kind of," Xander agreed. He could see her confusion but couldn't think of how to explain what he meant. "I'll think about switching. The competitive aspect is purely to give me a goal, really."

"Then you can compete against yourself," Sloan replied, "and that opens up way more sports. You could do rock climbing, if you wanted, or... I don't know. One of those other strange, 'how is this a sport' sports."

"Hmm. That's a good point," Xander agreed. "I wouldn't do Judo by myself without any sort of scheduled classes. I think I just like the structured movement. I'm not into dance. And it's fun to beat people."
