How Green Becomes Wood

Xander snorted softly. "I just like music more. Sometimes I sit and listen to music for about the length of time of a movie, I'd guess, not doing anything. Just sitting. Sometimes I'll do other stuff while listening."

"Music is a beautiful escape, but I am usually doing something, as well," Peter agreed.

Xander gave a little shrug, not sure how to explain how much of an escape music had been through his life. Not really the playing it, though he did enjoy that, but the listening to it and letting it transport him to another world. "Alec watches a lot of stuff while working on his projects. He can even have something going when doing homework, which I cannot do."

When the lunch bell rang, Sloan picked up her jacket and put it on, but the time didn't zipper it so the sequins were still visible. Her class was on the other end of school, so she had to hurry off, but she made her goodbyes as she did. Milo, meanwhile, lingered around the twins, since they were heading in more or less the same direction.

Becky and Peter said their farewells since they were in different classes, and off they went.

"Everyone looked really cool today," Alec remarked as they walked. "Milo, can I have some copies? I'm totally willing to reimburse you for at least some of your dark room time. I know it's not exactly cheap."

"Oh, that's very cool! And means she must be nicely established," Alec grinned. "I'm so happy for her, and for you! That's cool. I'm looking forward to seeing them."

"You're babbling," Xander remarked.

"Oh, sorry. I'm a little hyped up emotionally," Alec said, still smiling, but trying to lower his voice. "I'll try to bring it down a notch."

"Yeah, she's been doing really well at her diner, she says," Milo said, pleased for a moment, but then his smile faded, "She said she doesn't know if she'll be able to come up here for my birthday, though. She wants to, but she said she had something unexpected come up that's been taking a lot of her time."

"And so are you, which is awesome to see," Alec said cheerfully. "Oh, there's Matthew. I wanted to ask him about this season's play." He trotted off quickly, leaving Xander and Milo.

"No," Milo replied, "Well. I don't know. It's not just the energy. They sometimes ask me to take pictures during rehearsals, and I like doing it. Some of them say awful things." He shrugged, "There are egos in theatre. Even high school theatre. And then there's..."

Milo frowned heavily, thinking carefully about what it was he wanted to say. At last, he raised his eyes and asked, "What do you think about Becky always giving me pieces of candy to try to get me to like her?"

"What do I think of it?" Xander repeated, puzzled. "Uh, that she's doing her best to soften you toward her, I guess. She sees how anxious you are around people, so she decided to try to form a positive association with her so you won't be as anxious when she tries to talk to you. Pavlov and all of that."
