How Green Becomes Wood

"At least one sheep," Ciara said mildly. "One of the greatest shocks of starting out any sort of yarn work is how little one skein actually covers. We should leave patterns for a later time, so what color or colors would you like to start with?"

"Oh, I don't know enough about colors to choose," Daizi replied, "I've been told I wear lots of blues and purples, Dark wears lots of black and red, Xander wears mostly red, and Alec wears all of them, sometimes at once. But I don't really think about colour in the same way. I think the nursery is..." She paused to remember, because it had been so long since she stopped to think about it, "Blue, I think? I just know the wallpaper has lots of animals in it."

Xander considered correcting her. He wore lots of black with red accents, not lots of red, but, then again, maybe that was splitting hairs. She could honestly think he wore pink all the time for all he really minded.

"A dark blue, then, I think, will be a good place to start. We shall set up a time later, and I will obtain the yarn for you," Ciara said decisively.

"I would love that," Daizi replied, thrilled that Ciara had invited her to another hangout, "Ivy-Qadira, would you like a pretty blue sweater?"

"You might want to make it a size up so she does not outgrow it by the time it is finished," Dark suggested. Ivy didn't grow quite as rapidly as she did her first year, not by any means, but sweaters took time and she still grew quickly.

Ciara considered this gravely. "I made a shawl once with a complicated pattern," she finally said. "I was a teenager then, so I do not know if it was actually particularly complicated, but it seemed so at the time. It came out very, very well with minimal mistakes, and I wore it happily for many years."

"It somehow ended up in the regular wash," Ciara replied regretfully. "It was already fairly worn by that time, but still had some life in it. No longer after it had gone through both washer and dryer."

"That's heart breaking, I'm sorry," Daizi replied with genuine empathy in her voice, "I can't tell you... I've accidentally destroyed more than a few garments of mine and Dark's that way, but none as precious as that."

"It is what it is," Ciara said pragmatically. "Nothing lasts forever, especially garments. They are meant to be worn, so it is a good thing, in a way of thinking, when they can be worn no more."

"That's true, but it's still sad to lose something meaningful to you." Daizi replied, "I still miss this one necklace I had when I was a kid. I have no idea what happened to it, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't even anything special, but I felt like I was so special when I had it on."

"This is true," Ciara agreed. "I suppose everyone, especially little girls, had that one thing that made them feel special when they wore it. In a way, we never quite lose that feeling."

"It is fascinating to see her personality develop," Dark agreed, understanding exactly what Ciara meant, "I never could have predicted this is what she would be like even at just shy of 18 months when she was born, so I can hardly imagine what it will be like when she's grown."

"Speaking of growing things," Ciara remarked, "how is your kitten, Alec?"

Alec lit up and scooted over as close to her as he could as he pulled out his phone. "She is so precious! And she's getting fluffier and fluffier! She's kind of hard to get a good picture of, but check these out!"

Ciara obligingly nodded along as Alec flipped through picture after picture of a dark void and explained what was happening in each picture. Sometimes, she could see a pair of eyes in the center of the void.

"She doesn't try to trip me as often as some cats I've known try to, and that's very nice," Daizi said, "She spends a lot of time in Dark's lap when Alec isn't home and he actually has a moment to sit down."

"Does she?" Ciara asked. Dark had not struck her as a cat person.

Alec nodded happily. "She likes him because he's tall, I think. She follows Mama around some and tries to tell her things, and she likes to play with Ivy."
