How Green Becomes Wood

Xander shook his head. "I don't like imagining Mini as a cow. Feels weird."

"Maybe she'll want to borrow some lacy things? Or she'll go as Annie Oakley!" Alec grinned.

"She is too young for lacy things," Dark said, looking at his toddler, "What do you think, Ivy? How do you want to dress for your Uncle Cooger's birthday?"

"I wonder if I can fit my old corset from the Ren Faire..." Daizi wondered.

"I meant Miss Lex could borrow the lacy things and go as a gun slinger, not Ivy," Alec said dryly.

"Put the Mini in a potato sack. A fake one, not a real one. She used to be a potato," Xander suggested.

Alec considered this thoughtfully. "Close enough for some things, especially looser things. Like skirts. They'd be long on her, and your shirts might be too tight on her. Her arms, I mean," he added, blushing. "I don't know how close you are in waist measurements, exactly. So, loose stuff. Nothing that would need to be a close fit."

"She'd make a cute potato sack," Xander said.

"I imagine her arms must be larger than mine," Daizi agreed, "If she asks to borrow anything, I'd let her, but I don't know what she's planning, or if Cooger had told her to start planning yet. I need to start planning."

"She is cute in whatever she wears, because she is very cute," Dark said, smoothing Ivy's hair.

"I will text him to text her," Dark said, and then looked between his son and his daughter, "She is still cute. A person can be vexing and cute at the same time, if it were not possible I would not have been able to be married to your mother for ten years."

"Wow, Goose," Daizi laughed, whipping her head around.

"Most nights, down at the foot of the bed," Daizi confirmed, "but I'm not sure I'm prepared to let your father off so easily."

"Would you suggest a standard cowboy hat?" Dark asked, intentionally trying to annoy his wife now.

"Well, we don't have a dog house, but I suppose he could sleep on the couch," Alec suggested.

Xander snorted. "If you want to go straight laced, sure, but that doesn't seem much like you."

Considering this for a few moments, and then admitted, "I would be rather fond of a dark red hat... but I do not imagine I would be able to find one before April 7th, at least not one which fits."

"Fair point," Xander agreed.

Alec raised his brows and smiled. He knew someone who loved their hats. Maybe they would have an idea where to get one! It would be fun to surprise Dark with a hat.

After dinner, Dark took Ivy upstairs to start preparing her for bed, while Daizi stayed downstairs to hang out with her sons more.

The next day, the invitations to Cooger's party---asserting the Western theme and costume element---arrived to all of his guest's homes, so even if Cooger hadn't texted Lex about it yet, she would find out.

During the week, Dark and Daizi both took time going through their wardrobes to put together what they might end up wearing to the party. With a bit of help, Daizi found one she liked well enough, but Dark found himself torn between two, and as Daizi kept teasing, he didn't have a hat.

Soon enough, it was Friday again, and Milo's birthday.

The twins arrived very early to school that day, and they worked together to decorate Milo's locker. Xander had been uncertain about doing it, worried that Milo wouldn't like the attention being drawn to him. Alec talked him into it, reasoning it was just the locker door, not Milo himself. Xander finally agreed as long as they did not get too carried away. They took a solid purple wrapping paper and wrapped it around the door, and in the middle they glewed on silver letters to make "Happy Birthday" in all capitals. That took the most time, as they had to make it perfectly centered and arched, and after that, it was a breeze. Alec had gotten images of all sorts of cameras, new and old, and they picked the most unique of them to glue onto the paper. After that came pictures of pictures. Most of them were very old, but there were a variety of eras. There were a couple of pictures of landscapes, and some of posed pictures, but most were candid. Xander had found most of them, and Alec had cleaned them up and printed them out. A few pictures Alec had carefully designed to look like photo booth pictures even though they were from the Victorian era or similar. They were pictures of couples or families in a range of reactions, his favorite being a man and a wife making each other laugh. It showed that people never did change. Around the edges, they included images of bass guitars and a few of Milo's favorite bands, arranged like a border. Xander added in a few quotes from songs or band members he remembered Milo liking or ones he thought Milo would like, and Alec carefully drew little speech bubbles connecting the quotes to their respective speaker. It took them a decent amount of time, but they finished before Milo arrived at school, and they scattered.
