How Green Becomes Wood

"Welcome," Xander said, leading the way to the kitchen. He gave Elle a nod and raided the firdge for the treats he'd made, bringing them out to put on the table.

Peter tried to help get the cups, but he was too short to reach. Alec came over to help him, and then Peter poured out some milk for everyone.

If Milo was being honest, he never really drank just a full glass of milk anymore, and hadn't in years, but it was poured so it seemed rude to not drink it.

"Are we able to put candles in these?" Elle asked, going to retrieve the grandparents.

"Um." Xander hadn't really thought of that. He moved the biggest one into the central position and looked at it. "Yes. You might need to kind of prop them between the fruit pieces."

As long as there's no wax or spit going everywhere, Xander thought.

Alec and Peter gathered around, ready to start singing Happy Birthday the second the candles were ready.

Milo didn't love being sang to, but unlike Dark who absolutely refused it, he sat there politely and took it for what it was. The rules of birthdays was on birthdays, you were sung to, so he'd survive it.

The twins and Peter made it quick and didn't drag it out, ending before everyone else and waited. Alec quickly plunked his birthday hat on Milo, giving him a colorful cone for the song.

Once the song was over, Milo blew out the candles, completely forgetting to make a wish first. The nice part was since the tarts were all individual, there was no need to wait to cut the pieces before everyone was able to partake in their dessert.

The big one was specifically for Milo, and Xander shoved it toward him before he could even think to protest. The rest were first come, first serve. Alec and Xander had tried out every single tart there, so they were happy to let others go first and take their tarts. It was not as special to them anymore.

Milo's grandfather made a mild comment about how he didn't quite understand not having an actual birthday cake for a birthday, but he did admit the tarts were really good, as did everyone else in the house.

Milo was really grateful, because he didn't really like cake, but this was perfect.

"It's fun having you over," Milo said, looking around his grandparents house and trying to think of another thing they could do. Most of his video games were really designed for this many people, and even though he had a few which could accommodate it, he didn't have that many controllers. "I think I have some board games, if you'd like to play." He really didn't want his friends to go home thinking he had a boring party, but after the twin's party, where there was so much going on, he was struggling to think up what they could do. It was the issue of an introvert's birthday.

"What board games do you have?" Peter asked. "Let's see what you've got!"

"Board games are a lot of fun," Alec agreed. "Do you have cooperative ones, or competitive ones? Or both?"

"They're mostly competitive" Milo replied, going to the linen closet where the games are kept, "We could play Catan, that's a competitive one, but it's a lot of fun. I prefer cooperative games, but we don't really have any."

Milo cleared the coffee table and began setting up the board, which took a little bit of time before he was satisfied with it, "So basically, we're all trying to build our settlements, and to do so we need different amounts of these resources, which we get by..." He proceeded to briefly explain the rules, mentioning how they could trade with each other, build roads, and use the thief to torture each other.

The twins listened intently and did their best to follow the rules. Alec did pretty decently, although he did get easily distracted. Xander wasn't very good, but he favored the thief. Peter knew and understood the game and did very well while trying to help the twins along.
