How Green Becomes Wood

When Dark told Daizi about Xander's mishap about the mud wrestling, she laughed so loudly it could be heard upstairs and woke Ivy, which was, in a way, Dark's penance as he tried to soothe her again. Thankfully, it didn't take too long, and soon enough he was telling his wife about his day, having already heard about hers.

Eventually, the weekend had to end, and the twins went back to school. Alec found it annoying to try to pay attention with Mother's Day to plan and Coogers birthday coming up, but he did his best. He even borrowed a couple of Xander's fidget toys to play with in an attempt to keep his attention on his classes. Xander had no such worry. He was much better at sticking things in mental boxes for later.

Milo was still in a bit of a daze over learning he'd be staying. His excitement dimmed slightly when he stepped back into the school and remembered everything he didn't like and now wouldn't be able to count on leaving, but after spending the weekend with his mother in her apartment, he still wasn't totally back in his usual state of mind. He was shocked, the first time he went into her apartment, to learn she had hung up some of the pictures he had sent her on the walls, and had bought a frame for her favourite postcards from him. It was a very strange thing to walk into a new place and be greeted with evidence he had been there.

All of it was to say, he didn't pay much attention in class, and mostly just followed behind Alec and Xander.

Xander knew Milo wasn't fully with it, and he figured t had something to do with what had happened over the weekend, but since Milo seemed to be in a good mood, more or less, Xander asked no questions. He took extra notes in case Milo needed them later and made sure he was walking to the right class. It was kind of nice to see Milo not hyper vigilant and not overly anxious.

Alec asked Milo what he thought of his ideas for his room, but quickly realized Milo was not really paying attention, so he saved the conversation for later. It would keep. He considered asking Milo what he was doing for his mother for the upcoming holiday, but then he decided that maybe that wasn't a conversation Milo wanted to have with him. After all, the topic of his mother had never exactly been one he and Milo had always had success with.

As they walked to their last class, Sloan and Claire were talking by their lockers. Sloan was in her usual outfit of baggy, cuffed jeans and her green jacket, but today she was wearing a t-shirt with a Monet print on it that she had clearly cut off at shoulder and the sleeves herself. Her jacket had slipped off one shoulder and she was resting her weight on one hip. Claire, meanwhile, had her hair in two twin braids tied with ribbons at the end, and was wearing a bubblegum pink Carebears t-shirt tucked into a pastel pink, plaid skirt that fell about mid-thigh. They were talking about something in that way girls do, where they laugh, but convene like conspiritors.

Sloan noticed the twins and Milo first, and held up her still hand in a wave. When Claire saw who her friend was waving towards, she waved much more exuberantly.

Xander was in his usual black attire, but he was wearing the shirt Alec had made with one shoulder rhinestoned in silver studs, and his tooth earring and a black leather belt with silver inlay. He nodded to them both. "Sup?"

Alec was in full '70s-inspired garb with dark green bell-bottom pants and a bright pink striped button-up shirt paired with a rich, blue sweater. He grinned at Claire and then Sloan and waved back excitedly. "Hi! Wow, you two are looking absolutely killer today! Is it a special day? Claire, I love your shirt."

"Thanks!" Claire replied, pulling at the fabric, "I got it at the thriftstore this weekend."

"No special day," Sloan replied, putting her hand in her back pocket, "I like your pants."

"Thanks!" Alec said brightly. "I've been thinking about possibly adding some sort of decal or accent along the leg or on the hem, but I'm not sure. They look so good as they are!" He smiled at Claire. "What do you think?"

"Oh, that would be really cool!" Claire replied, "Sloan loves doing decals like that. We bought a ton on sale and we're just going to destroy her jeans with them later."

"Yeah, my mom's gonna be pissed," Sloan grinned.

"You could do leaves?" Claire suggested, "Red and orange would look good with the green."

"Yeah but then they'd be so autumnal, you couldn't wear them the rest of the year," Sloan pointed out.

"That's true... Oh! You could do bugs! Or snails!"

"Oh, bugs and snails!" Alec grinned, twisting his leg to look down at his own pants. "Those would look fantastic! And, I know they are normally green, but what about a tiny frog or two?"

"I'll have to sketch out some ideas," Alec said. "Those are fabulous ideas, and I'm looking forward to giving them a shot. What have you two been up to?"

Xander glanced at Milo and casually edged over to lean against the lockers. He didn't need to be here, it seemed.

"Not much today," Sloan told Alec, "Like Claire said, we went thrifting on Saturday though, and we hit a craft store before getting boba. This Friday we're probably going to have a sleepover at my place and probably ruin half of our clothes decorating them."

"I bought fake pearls and fabric glue," Claire said, "I've got a vision."

"If it doesn't turn out like our vision and we can't go back, then yeah," Sloan teased, "Not all plans work out."

"It'll be great, though," Claire said more confidently, "And yeah, I'll show you! Believe me, if my ideas come to fruition, I'm coming to school in them all next week."

Alec shook his head. "I'm sure there won't be, either, but if there are, failures are often the most fun! If nothing else. And I am curious what you are going to do with the pearls."

"I have this denim mini skirt, it's like..." she held her thumb and forefinger about four inches apart, "This much above the knee, and it's technically against dress code because my fingertips just barely go past the hem, so I bought this white scalloped lace I want to try to sew it on. On the underside of the skirt, obviously. Otherwise, I'm just going to fabric glue it, but then I thought it'd be cute if I put pearls on the denim hem, and then I want to put them along the pockets. And then I'll see if I end up adding more because if I get into a flow state there's no telling how many pearls I'll glue on."

"Wow! That is going to be amazing!" Alec breathed. "I can't wait to see it." The thought popped into his head that he really couldn't wait to see her wearing it. That sounded like the kind of skirt that, while not scandalous, would make certain things look very good in a quiet way. That thought derailed all others, and for a second, he stood looking a bit like a cross between a lost puppy and a goldfish out of water.

Xander stepped in. "Pearls are all good and well, but you realize we still have class to get to?" he drawled. He caught Alec's shoulder and pulled him away. "Have fun with the glue and stuff, you two. Slo, text me a cool pic, yeah? Like if you glue your fingers together."
