How Green Becomes Wood

"I am sure she will," Dark replied, putting the bar of soap in his pocket and then putting his hand on Alec's shoulder to lead him out. After they left, he told his son, "If you are in a relationship, few decisions are more pressing than what scent to choose."

"Fair enough," Alec agreed, "but when you are a teen son who just helped his uncle find his dad the most epic of awesome hats, you tend not to put soap too high up on the excitement list."

"Yep!" Alec said. "Except for one thing. Do you have any of those arm band things? The type that hold up your sleeves on your biceps? They aren't a necessity, but they'll add that touch, I think."

Dark looked down at Alec as he opened the car door, "A sleeve garter? I might, but I do not know if mine will fit you. If I still own the ones I used to, I believe mine had buckles rather than elastic."

"Then my outfit will be complete, and I shall be the most authentic character there! Because that is what this party is really about: Authenticity," Alec said smugly as he slid on his heart-shaped sunglasses.

"It'll be jaw-dropping, whatever she picks," Alec said. "Xander says he'll be the most authentic because his outfit has authentic dirt and horse hair on it. I think Mama's going to hate it."

Dark nodded, smiling in his little way at the road, enjoying the mental picture, "She really knows how to dress... I think so long as your brother's clothes are washed, she will be fine, horse hair and all."

The next day was Cooger's party. Dark made a point to put Cooger's gifts, and a prop Dark had prepared, into the car before they got dressed, just to make sure absolutely nothing was forgotten. Then, after the twins were dressed, and therefore could watch Ivy, Dark and Daizi went upstairs to dress themselves. Dark put on a pair of pinstripe pants, his most billowy dress shirt, and then, after a few moments of looking at himself with the shirt buttoned down nearly to his navel, committed to his idea and buttoned it up the rest of the way, adding a red silk cravat, pinned with his gold snake tie pin, and donned his most suitable waistcoat. Then, admiring how the look was coming together, he combed his hair back, adding a deeper side part than he usually wore. He styled his hair, and then making extensive use of his beard products, twisted his mustache up to make it as devious as possible. Satisfied, he washed his hands, rolled down his sleeves. and put on his best suit jacket, the one he seldomly got to wear. Then, he added a red rose to his lapel and his pocket watch. Afterwards, he looked in the mirror and thought to himself... He looked like he was on a trip to Georgia with the intent to challenge a man to a fiddle contest. Chuckling to himself, and feeling like the owner of the Carnival of his dreams, he slipped a little vial he had prepared into his pocket, and went to help Daizi with her corset.

She was already wearing a black chemise and ruffled skirt, and although she could lace up her red, spider-adorned corset on her own, it was more fun to have him to it. She stood, holding the bed post, even though her corset fit properly so it did not strangle her to wear it, mostly for the vibe of being helped into it. It was a difficult thing for them both, when putting clothes on inspired desires to do the opposite. After her corset was laced, Dark helped her put her necklace on, and after she slipped her chemise down off her shoulders, he kissed her on the newly-bare skin. Then he put her hands on her waist and turned her around, admiring the way her necklace drew his eye to what her corset exentuated. With a reading and alluring laugh, Daizi stretched up onto her toes to kiss him before saying, "You're going to ruin my lipstick, Goose," before breaking away and putting in the numerous earrings she had chosen for the day and hiking up her skirt, revealing the stockings and the barest hint of petticoat and her red velvet boots.

This settled, they retrieved Ivy. After Daizi carefully styled her hair into little pigtails, which she tied with ribbons, Dark dressed her in a little prairie dress. They had a tie-on bonnet for her and everything, but didn't put it on yet in hopes she would wear it for at least a little while amongst guests (and, to be fair, Dark wasn't wearing his hat yet, either). Afterwards, the were ready to meet the twins at the car.

Alec had really enjoyed researching his costume. It had led him down some really fun rabbit trails, and he found himself texting Milo and Peter a fair bit to tell them all about what he'd learned about the music of Ragtime. Xander could sit and listen to only so many old tunes, after all, and he wanted to tell another music enthusiast! He dressed up in a pair of relaxed-fit, black, wool trousers, a red and white striped button-up shirt, a bright red vest, a black bow tie, and Dark's borrowed black sleeve garters. He'd had to do a bit of jury rigging to get the sleeve garters to fit right, but they did add a certain something to the look. He waited until the last minute to slick back his shoulder-length red hair and part it on one side. It took a bit of fussing to get in that wave-look one often saw in old-timey pictures, but he managed to get it to look pretty good! A pair of black shoes (tennis shoes, but he hoped no one would notice) finished off the look! He didn't have a jacket that really went with the outfit, but it was reasonably decent out temperature-wise, so he tossed his modern-day coat into the back of the car for when it got cold after the sun went down.

Xander had a mix of items from his own closet and a couple of borrowed items from his friends at the stables. Black jeans, a dark blue western shirt, and an old sheepskin vest made up his base look. Then he had on a simple leather belt to do the job of keeping his pants up, and over that a wide gun belt slung at a low angle over his hips. There was even a holster (empty, of course). An old brown poncho and a flat-brimmed, flat-topped hat called a telescope or "gamblers" hat completed the look. The hat and the vest were at least as old as he was, if not older, and his shirt and pants were wrinkled and permanently stained in places. He looked like a proper roughian as he leaned against the car waiting for his parents.

Dark followed Daizi out to the car, trying his absolute best not to too obviously admire the way her corset and the ruffles of her skirt made her waist and hips look. It was a test of resolve.

"You both look excellent," Dark praised, looking over them both while Daizi put Ivy into the carseat.

"You'll have to describe your outfits to me on the drive."

"Happily!" Alec said as he got in the car with them.

Xander looked down at himself, wondering how he was going to describe this. "Alright. Let's go to this hoedown."

"I wonder why it's called a hoedown?" Alec mused.

Once they were buckled in and ready, Alec began thoroughly describing what they were both wearing to Daizi, doing his best to make it as accurate as possible.
