How Green Becomes Wood

"Ditto!" Alec told him.

The pair went outside, and while Xander was handling the crutches and boot just fine, Alec still fussed at him whenever he moved more than changing positions. Xander grumbled, but tolerated it, and once he was comfortable on one of the deck chairs, Alec went to fetch a couple of books and his drawing pad. They settled in, content to enjoy the outside quiet for a while.

Dark went upstairs and, after removing his socks, crawled underneath the covers, drew the curtains around his bed shut, and lay back. He knew he likely didn't have too long before Ivy woke up, but he also knew he didn't have much time to himself either. He was glad to not hurt too badly, but now that the adrenaline was wearing off, he was still sore. His hand throbbed, but moving it he knew nothing was broken. But he was tired. He shut his eyes, and the next thing he knew, he heard Ivy crying on the baby monitor, and it was a full hour later.

After getting Ivy and changing her diaper, he brought her downstairs to play while he made lunch for himself and a snack for Ivy and settled in for his normal activities.

Much later, Daizi came home from work slightly later than usual again. This time, she had not stopped in at the grocery store for soup ingredients (she could not make it two days in a row), but she had gotten takeout from one of their usual places, so she knew what everybody's orders would be, and had stopped at a bakery to bring home one of Dark's favourite deserts so she could surprise him with it, but that she stuck into the fridge to hide it before going to greet her family.

The twins enjoyed their day of lounging around and not doing anything productive whatsoever. Alec did have a therapy session, having arranged for this month's session to land during the break, but he did it online. Other than that, they had fun being slugs. Xander didn't even try to work in his shed. It was fun to be utterly irresponsible from time to time. When Ivy was awake, they made themselves available but did not actively seek to play with her. If she asked them, they gladly played, and Xander had fun playing with Enkidu.

When Daizi came home, Kiki was the first to greet her, mewing excitedly. She was confused as to why the people were all home, but happy to welcome home the Nice-Smells Person. The Nice-Spells person was also bringing home a lot of extra good smells! The twins were next, both almost instantly investigating the source of the smells of food.

The only reason why Ivy wasn't the first one there when Daizi stepped inside was because Dark was currently on his back playing airplane with her. Enkidu, meanwhile, couldn't make it first because Kiki ran in front of his paws, and he did not want to step on the little cat. She always managed to be under-paw and he was smart enough to recognize him.

"Hello my darlings," Daizi said in her loving, musical way as she knelt to pet Kiki and Enkidu, "How was your day?"

From the living room, Ivy heard her mother's voice and joyously called, "Mama!" and jerked herself so quickly Dark had to hold her more firmly to stop her from falling as he lowered her so she could go and see.

"What smells so good?" Alec asked, circling Daizi a bit like a shark. "Did you have a good day?"

Kiki purred and shoved herself up against Daizi, enjoying the attention, but when Ivy came running in, she trotted out of the way.

"I did have a good day," Daizi said, setting the takeout down on the counter, "And I brought home dinner. Nobody wants to cook on the first day of Spring Break," or after a fist fight, "Hello, habibti! Did you miss me?"
