How Green Becomes Wood

"You are hard to miss. I'm Mary, by the way," she said, taking his arm. Her touch was friendlier than Ciara's had been, but she refrained from doing anything silly like hanging off his arm.

"Hello Mary," Dark said, keeping her at a distance close enough to not be awkward, but without the same quiet friendliness that he had shown Ciara, although he was do restrained it was not immediately clear there was a difference. Once they were on the dance floor, though, he presented his hand to her in an almost princelike way so they could start their dance in earnest.

"It remains to be seen," Dark replied, putting his hand on her upper back. He was more than able to lead her that way, and honestly for a quicker dance he felt it a bit easier, but mostly just felt more comfortable holding a stranger that way.

Mary happily let him lead the way, smiling in sheer delight at his ability as they started to dance. Her assumption that he could dance was proven right, and any reservations that she had that he might be slow because of his size were soon banished. She laughed happily when they spun, having a lot of fun. She wasn't used to having such a tall partner, but she quickly adjusted for it.

Mary's friend, Heather, was waiting in the wings for her turn when the song ended.

Ciara had a couple of men cautiously ask her, but she declined in favor of waiting for a slower song. A third man was willing to wait for the slow song, and they stood watching the dancers and chatting quietly.

Dark easily spun her around and danced with her across the floor, making very good use of his years of dance lessons. He made some polite conversation with her, but also let his mind wander as much as it could while still remaining focused on the dance. Since he was so much taller than this woman, he imagined what it would be like when his daughter was this tall, and really looked forwards to when he could dance with her like this. It'd save his back, for one thing.

When it ended, he thanked Mary courteously, and did not realize someone else already had designs on him.

"Oh, I would very much like!" Heather said excitedly. It was not often she found a male partner who could keep up in a fast dance.
