How Green Becomes Wood

"I should be available, I do not know why I would not be," Dark replied, beating the paint out of his brush using a towel on his lap as he glanced up at the clock, "Banishment? I was unaware I had been banished."

"That is a very important reason to call me back," Dark said, setting his paintbrush back in its place, carefully setting his mermaid down on a stand so it would not be smudged, and putting away his glasses, "Today has not been your sister's best day. I am not sure if she is teething or having a growth spurt, but she has been... sensitive today." To say the least of it.

"Teething, growth spurt, or testing the boundaries of her relatively recent newfound freedom of being able to toddle off wherever she pleases," Alec grinned. "Or some combination thereof. Whatever it is, Mama says it's your turn." He stepped out of the shed and waited for Dark. "We went to Build-A-Bear. I've never done one before."

"Or struggling to adjust to Daizi not being home all the time, or all of the above," Dark sighed, pushing his hair back as they walked to the house, "I do not believe I have ever been to Build-a-Bear. Was it nice?"

"It was choice overload, but it was awesome!" Alec said happily, walking with Dark. "I got the sweetest Dr. Suess bear, and Claire got a blueberry-themed highland cow."

"As much as I enjoy Dr. Suess, that is a strange book to give to a non-native speaker, in my opinion," Alec mused, following him in. "I can show you! I'll go get him." He scampered away happily to fetch the bear.

"There were many words which Cooger had to tell me were fabricated and meaningless," Dark said, recalling some embarrassing moments as he walked towards the kitchen, "I would be very interested in seeing your bear."

"Goose," Daizi called from the kitchen.

"I am coming," He assured her, hurrying up a bit.

Alec fetched his bear and headed back downstairs, but then he hesitated. What if Ivy saw it? She'd be interested. Why wouldn't she be? But this was one toy he absolutely did not want her to play with. He couldn't hide it forever, he didn't think. He decided to brace himself and try to show Dark without Ivy causing too much of a fuss.

In the kitchen, Dark took Ivy over from Daizi. While she was passed from one loving set of arms to another, Dark leaned in and kissed Daizi's hair, briefly hugging her with one arm. It looked like she needed it. Ivy grumbled unhappily as she was squeezed between her two giant parents and tried to push them apart. Chuckling softly, Dark kissed her too, "Yalla, Tifla," he told her, "Let us go sit together on the couch, okay?" Then, suddenly feeling the same worry Alec had regarding the bear, he stopped at the freezer for her favourite teether to hopefully keep her distracted.

"Let us get settled first," Dark advised Alec, sitting down on his favourite part of the couch and adjusting his toddler so she was warm and cozy against his chest while she chewed on her teether. As he lovingly stroked her dark hair, Dark thought she probably must be teething if this was helping her so much, and her head felt a bit warm which also followed. Once he was certain she was settled and distracted, he said, "Alright, let me see your bear."

Alec happily uncovered the bear and presented it to Dark. "Ta-da!" he said, keeping his voice low to not attract too much attention from Ivy. "The Dr. Suess bear! I named him Geisel, last name, and I need a good B name for his first name."
