How Green Becomes Wood

"I hope it'll be useful to you. If not, then you can terrify people when you pull it out in front of sighted folks," Xander told her. Then he handed her a final box. "Ba will have to tell you more about this. Sorry."

The box was one of those with a lid that folded over and slotted closed, and inside was an 8oz bottle of Mother Shrub mocktail drink mixer, black cherry flavored, spritzers, elixirs, and cocktails. It could make up to sixteen drinks depending on how much flavoring an individual liked in it, and claimed to be completely sourced organically and responsibly. Whatever that actually meant.

Alec and Xander both turned to Dark. "I think that's a great idea."

Alec continued, "We thought maybe you'd like to go out for lunch instead of dinner tonight? A lot of people take their mom out for dinner, so it'll be really crowded, but we thought lunch might be a little bit nicer. Your favorite restaurant!"

"I think the person who actually drinks the stuff, mocktails and cocktails, should be the one to make it," Xander said, sliding it back toward Dark.

"Perfect!" Alec chirped, clapping his hands. "Now we just have to figure out what to do with you until then."

"Nobody, but you're the one who drinks the stuff, and therefore knows what it should taste like," Xander said, sliding the box back toward Dark.

Alec grinned. "Sorry, Mama. No, you aren't in trouble. Yet."

Xander raised his brows at Dark. "You want me to learn by trial with one little important bottle?" He slid the box back.

"Right, Mama, you are the paragon of innocence," Alec sniggered. He glanced toward Dark and Xander in exasperation. "Would you two cut that out?"

"Add mixer a little at a time, you will be fine," Dark said easily.

"I've not done anything wrong ever in my life," Daizi said before turning to her husband and son said, "Goose, darling, I hate to interrupt, but surely I have a Mother's Day present from you as well? If you can spare a moment"

"Of course I do," Dark replied, getting up and getting a wrapped present from where he had stored it. It was a fairly heavy box, and when Daizi unwrapped it, Dark explained it was designed to be able to store either two decks of her tarot cards, or have cards on one side, and crystals, candles, and other occult items in the other. There was also a slot specifically built to hold unlit incense sticks. In the center of the two sections was the moon cycle, and on one half of the lid was a spider crawling down a web. On the other was a goose with its head turned towards the spider. Then, on the sides of the box was a tower, a hummingbird, an owl, and small, esoteric symbols like pentacles, swords, cups, and the like. All of these details were carved in relief so Daizi could feel them, and she spent a long time feeling over all of the details.

"This is really beautiful, Goose," Daizi praised, "Thank you... What's this slot for?"

"So you can rest the cards upright in them as you pull them, if you would like. I put it there intentionally for your daily cards."

"Wow!" Alec whispered, staring at the box.

Xander leaned in to get a good look at the box. "That is something special."

Alec glanced at Dark. "Way to show us up, Ba," he teased gently, his voice quiet. "That is above and beyond amazing!"

"I started making something else," Dark admitted, "but I decided it was better saved for another time. But you needed something special for your best deck," He told Daizi.

"Thank you, Goose, I love it," Daizi said, and leaned in to kiss him. Just as she was about to, though, Ivy grumbled in frustration and, wedging herself in between her parents, she pushed her Baba away.

"No, Baba!" She grumbled.

"Ivy-Qadira," Dark said, amused, "Mama can kiss Baba, it just means we love each other."

"No," Ivy repeated, putting her hand on Dark's cheek and continuing to hold him away. Once she felt he was properly at a distance, she let go and then hugged Daizi tightly, muttering something about Mama and Vee.

"Ivy," Daizi said gently, "Mama loves her baby Ivy, and she loves Baba, and she loves your brothers Alec and Xander." But Ivy only shook her head.

"Does Ivy think she can keep Mama all to herself?" Alec asked, smiling in amusement even though he knew this was a serious moment. "I'm afraid that will never work."

Xander stood and picked up the box. "I am going to go see if this works or to waste water," he told them and headed for the kitchen.
