How Green Becomes Wood

"Bird!" Ivy exclaimed, excitedly tugging at whichever family member was nearest and pointing! "Bird!" Raising her hand, she pointed... at a simple, brown, house finch, the exact birds usually spotted in their backyard.

XXander cackled. "Well done, Mini. Yep, that's a bird, alright!"

"A very nice and pretty bird," Alec agreed. "I wonder if they eat well here in the zoo?"

"What kind of Bird is it?" Daizi asked.

"A house finch," Dark answered, kneeling down a very long way beside his daughter, "What a special bird, Tifla, you spotted it so well!"

Alec and Xander were distracted by the okapi, fascinated by their prancing about. They calmed down briefly, but then one that looked to be younger than the rest stirred up the lot again. After a bit more running, they settled down for eating, ignoring the humans watching them.

After the Okapi settled down, they moved down towards the Bongoes, a species of antelope with a beautiful orange colour and white stripes. At first, it just seemed like there were two, one with horns and one without, eating at a feeder, but then after they stood for awhile, a little baby bongo crept out from behind the hornless one.

"Ivy-Qadira, look," Dark said, pointing, "That one is a baby, just like you are."

"Aw, a little mini of their own!" Alec cooed. "It's so cute!"

Ivy grinned, squeaking happily as she looked at the Baby Bongo. If there was one thing she understood, it was what a baby was, so she cooed and babbled at it. When the calf began nursing, Dark lifted Ivy up and quietly explained to her what that meant in words Ivy would understand. Knowing it would be hard to move on from this one, after setting Ivy back down, he stood back to take pictures of Ivy looking at the animal.

Xander and Alec amused themselves by reading the various signs around the enclosure and telling their family members the highlights. They were ready to move on before Ivy was, but they didn't go far. They shuffled to one side just far enough to be able to see the next exhibit and spied on that while waiting.

With enough effort, Dark and Daizi convinced Ivy to walk on to the next exhibit. Her brothers being visible in the near-distance did a lot to help convince her to say goodbye to the other baby.

"So, the Australian house?" Daizi asked, "I think they have wallabys and wombats."

"Is it an actual house? Or just an area?" Alec asked, pushing the stroller along.

"I thought wombats were made up," Xander said with a frown.
