How Green Becomes Wood

Alec sighed happily and went over to Dark, leaning against him lightly. "I don't care if I'm still a child in high school, Ba, I think I found The One. If she's not, then I cannot imagine how The One could possibly be better." He smiled and gave Dark a half hug before starting toward the stairs. He paused, turned around, and headed for the stairs downstairs instead to join his brother.

Dark sighed softly and returned the half-hug, knowing he should advise Alec to be cautious with his heart but feeling incapable of it, especially then. He had met The One when he had been a child in high school too, it made tempering expectations difficult. "I will see you in the morning, Albuma. Get some sleep. Just remember, when you are up: your mother is a light sleeper, and has similar questions for you too."

"Understood!" Alec chirped. He was looking forward to talking with his mother in the morning, and maybe telling his father more, too. For now, though, he headed downstairs to Xander's room.

Xander was asleep, but he woke with a grumble when Alec climbed into bed with him. "Why are you wearing jeans?"

"Because I didn't want to wake up Mama by going up and changing."

Xander shoved him out of the bed. "No jeans. Wear my stuff."

Alec changed into a pair of Xander's sleep pants and tried again.

"Why were you wearing jeans at whatever time of night this is?" Xander mumbled into his pillow while Alec hugged him.

Alec told him all about it. Everything. He then held his breath, waiting for Xander to shoot him down or otherwise degrade love and dating.

Instead, Xander patted him on the head. "Sounds like a good night, and good job couraging," he told his brother, still half asleep.

Alec grinned and hugged him tight. "This is the best night of my life!"

"Sounds like a pretty phenomenal one," Xander agreed. "Please sleep now."

Alec snuggled against him, humming softly. Xander was asleep almost instantly, but it took Alec a while to drift off.

The following morning, while Dark slept in a bit later than usual, Daizi helped Ivy throughout her morning routine. It was a good day for gardening, so she wanted to make sure Ivy was dressed and settled soon enough so she could do her work outside before it got too late in the day.

The twins emerged a little later than usual, though not egregiously late considering how late Alec had been up. They quickly went through their usual morning routine, but Alec was happier than he usually was in the morning. He had work today, but he wasn't feeling rushed at all as he gave his little sister some extra attention.

Ivy was glad for the extra attention and made a point to tell Alec all about her thoughts and opinions. While Daizi ate the crusts she had cut off from Ivy's toast, she remarked, "You are in a good mood this morning."

"I thought I heard you moving around last night," Daizi admitted, "I sleep with my window open, I heard quiet voices, but I fell asleep before your father could report back about what was happening."

"Claire and Sloan got back late from prom. I didn't stay up late watching for them, but I was awake because I was working on a project," Alec explained. I was about to go to bed properly when Claire threw pebbles at my window! Or a pebble. I looked out the window, and she was there, still dressed for prom, like a fairy in the night," Alec said and sighed wistfully. "It was so beautiful!"

"How could I not?" Alec asked. He set his elbows on the table and rested his chin in his hands as he pictured the scene again.

Xander rolled his eyes as he sat down in his usual place. The floating hearts were back.

"She said she thought of me during prom. I can't believe she spared the time and energy to think about me! And then she wanted to come see me and say hi. It was such a beautiful night. She was so beautiful. It was amazing," Alec sighed.

"Yes, Mama, we stayed right there in front of the house and did not wander off on an adventure at night without telling anyone," Alec said in amusement. "We stayed and talked right there in front. You're taking the romance out of my story!"

"Oh good, because it gets even better," Alec told her. "We were standing there, under the starlight, and even the wind sounded like music. She let me hold her in my arms and we stood there, talking, and then she told me something. She said, 'I remembered the name of the song,' and I asked her what it was. Do you know what it was?"
