Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

This time Peter got the knot right on the first go, then set it the way he had seen Badru do. Or hoped he had set it correctly anyway, he looked at Badru for approval

Badru inclined his head. "Good. Now we will leave it. Come, home where it is warm." He turned and started walking toward the cave. "You did well today."

Peter smiled at the small praise. That little amount meant a lot to him. He stuck his cold hands under his arms to warm them as they walked "Winter doesn't get colder than this does it?"

He nodded "don't like the cold" he sniffled a bit "do you think we will make it...or end up like the cannibals..."

Peter looked up at him once more and smiled "you're here. So I have a lot of hope! And Mathias and Mamma and Gray " he listed off the people he looked up ton

"Good!" Badru praised. He leaned down and picked Peter up, setting him on his shoulders as if he were a child half his size. "Let us go keep them hoped, yes?" he asked, meaning hopeful.

Peter grinned as he was picked up "hopeful" he provided for him, happy not to walk, his feet were freezing! They really needed to get more furs

Back at the cave Justira was busy showing lynna how to do the bricks while Charlie and Pepper foraged for food

"So, these things dry by the heat of the sun, right?" Kynna asked as she coaxed the clay into the rectangular mold.

Badru carried Peter into the cave and set him down by the fire. "Be warm, be dry," he told him. "Not get sick."

Justira stopped to sign ""in the summer yes. But now by fire. Outside is too wet now"

She glanced as Badru returned, noticing the movement from the corner of her eye

Badru nodded to her politely when he saw Justira watching. "You are doing well?" he asked, remembering to speak slowly for her to read his lips.

Lynna frowned and poked her brick, an idea forming, but it wasn't fully clear yet.

Justira nodded in answer to him, knowing he couldn't understand sign and not willing to use her voice un front of everyone, that was about all she could communicate to him without help, aside from simple universal hand gestures and expression. She was used to Faelar handling all the talking. The thought of him brought back the sadness to her eyes as she looked back down at the work to distract herself, but then paused and caught Lynna's attention by reaching out to touch her arm. Waiting for her to look up before signing.

"My old home, there may he supplies there we can take, left behind when we were forced out. The cannibals will not have taken the food stores and many supplies" she told her "it is two days journey". Tje structure was probably no longer livable but if they could get in and out that was all they needed to do.

Pepper returned moments later? Knocking the snow off her shoes before walking in. None of them had proper winter attire so trips out were relatively short and Mathias's gloves shared around the group, though even those were not winter gloves but better than nothing.

-

Misty at Jonah and Peppers insistence was staying bundled up near the fire and resting but not wishing to sit and do nothing she had her sketch pad and pencils with her. Very glad Mathias had gone back to fetch their things, including her art box.

Lynna stopped poking her brick to watch Justira's hands. When Justira finished, she nodded. "That sounds like a great idea!" she said then caught herself and signed the words. "It is a long journey for us, but maybe we can talk Mathias into letting us go. You would need to come so you could tell us where to go, and maybe Badru could come with us? I don't think Mathias should go that far."

~~

Badru followed her, but his goal was Pepper, not Mathias. "Peter did very well," he said as he approached.

~~

Jonah walked over, taking a break from hauling materials for bricks, and sat next to her. "What are you doing?" he asked curiously.

Justira nodded "I think that sounds best" she made good points she couldn't argue "it is late to start today but maybe tomorrow?" The sooner the better. Before the weather got bad again

Mathias was quietly working on arrows when they walked over. He smiled "can't say I'm surprised. Smart kid" he glanced over to where his nephew was sitting by the fire warming his hands. "Were you able track any bigger game?"

-

Misty smiled and showed him what she was working on. It was just some sketches of everyone's faces, a bit rough but good sketches, easy to tell who was who, perhaps a little more detail on Jonah. "What do you think?"

Lynna grinned, eager for another trip. "I will go talk to Mathias now." She stood and started to make her way over to Mathias but paused when she saw he was in a conversation.

~~

Badru dipped his head. "Herd of deer come often. Pigs. Bigger deer." He didn't know the word for Elk. "Many squirrels and rabbits. Good foot furs."

~~

Jonah studied the sketches and nodded. "Real good. That's some nice lines you got there. I can't draw a map to the outhouse."

"Elk? Moose?" Mathias guessed, not sure what else bigger dear could be, he was pretty sure reindeer didn't live around here and he wasn't sure how big they were anyway. "That's good anyway, should be ok as long as there is good hunting around..."

--

Misty smiled "Well, to be fair, most people in desolation have never picked up a pencil to draw at all... Art really isn't something encouraged down there... a waste of precious materials and all that"

Badru nodded. "Yes. Is very good hunting, and we soon have means to hunt," he said, nodding to the arrows. Lynna was also in the process of making another spear between brick making sessions with promises of more.

~~

"Yeah, also a waste of comfort and life and stuff," Jonah grunted. "I'd rather live up here with art and maybe die than survive down there without any joy." He was one to talk, and he knew it.

"We do have my rifle if it comes to it but we can't make new ammunition here... " in other words, emergencies only but so far they were doing ok and didn't need it. He glanced down at his pile of sticks, so far not actual arrows though. "We do need more arrowheads.."

--

Misty was rather surprised by this "Really? I always thought you preferred it down there"

Badru grunted in agreement. "I will go with Arena to get more. We are most used to the cold."

~~

Jonah shrugged. "Yes and no. I fit down there, but I wasn't happy. I don't fit up here, but it's growing on me. It's pretty good."
