Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

She lead him out into the field towards the tree's, as she did fireflies flew up from the tall grass, their lights a lazy scattered blink.

She didn't go all the way to the treeline but close enough he could really see the scale of the tree's and see into the forest itself.

He could hear the owls and the crickets hoot and chirp and hear other life moving about

Gray's mouth opened in silent wonder, his hand gripping hers tightly as he stared around. Oh, it was so beautiful! And the trees... his mind hurt just trying to comprehend how they could be real. They were so tall! It was astounding to think that these things could grow from his tiny lttle plants.

His plants...

His face fell slightly as he thought about his little garden in the house. The house itself would be fine, but the trees he'd grown down there, they needed cared for. They would die down there.

Justira watched him but then noticed his face fall, she didn't understand why so gently squeezed his hand to get his attention and gave him a concerned look, silently asking what was wrong

Gray let go of her hand and explained, "I am sad that I lost my plants down below. Perhaps I can get Lynna to bring them up, but otherwise, they will die."

Justira nodded in understanding, touched how much he cared about those plants "I am sure we can find a place up here that they will thrive"

That was when he heard a distant howl, not so close that they needed to worry and good that she was blissfully unaware. After her experience, she'd be forever scared if wolves.

Gray tipped his head, listening. There was no way for him to accurately judge where it was coming from, but he guessed it wasn't too close. Even so, he turned to Justira and touched her hand to get her attention. "Do you mind if we head back now?" he asked politely. "I am sure we are safe, yet I am starting to feel overwhelmed. There is just so much!" All true, but with the added reason of putting protection between them and whatever the howling thing was.

She smiled and nodded her understanding. It was a lot, especially having seen how they lived and knowing most had never seen the outside. "Whatever you wish. I just wanted to introduce you to the world outside" she sighed

"I would like to come again. Maybe tomorrow, even if the moon comes back slowly," Gray signed. "Thank you for this introduction." He held out his hand to her, inviting her to hold it, and turned to walk back.

She smiled and took the offered hand, happy he was the one offering this time.

They didn't come across any issues on the way back thankfully and found the hatch among the grass easily enough since they knew where to look

Gray let Justira go in first then paused, looking out at the sky once more. His insides quivered still at the realization that there was no roof above them, but even so, a part of him already wanted to try going out again. He smiled then closed the hatch behind himself, securing it carefully.

Justira waited for him at the bottom of the ladder. She waited until he looked at her again before she signed "the world up there isn't quite so bad?"

Gray shook his head and smiled. Once he was at the bottom of the ladder, he signed, "No, not so bad at all. Come, it is time we both got some sleep. I think there will be a lot to do tomorrow."

She nodded her agreement to that and headed into the loving room where everyone else slept. She found her spot on the end of the second couch again and left the rest for Gray

A full lunar cycle passed for the refugees. With Mathias and Badru helping, every person on the Surface had their own shelter, no matter how small, and built sturdily. Badru deligated Faelar and Justira as his aids in teaching people how to forage for food and how to cook it, even teaching them how to trap animals for meat. Several more people came to the Surface after finally coming to terms with the fact that the lights would never come back on, but some still refused.

Lynna and Gray led several trips down below to gather everything they could from the abandoned houses, even trying to get anything important someone had left behind. They couldn't get everything, but they tried their best. Even Gray's plants made it up and planted one night. Gray could not take the daylight or even the bright moonlight, but he was very good at slinking around the dark with Lynna and her crew. He was able to collect enough materials from the broken engines and his old communications tower to give to Pepper to make small, rudimentary radios and three tiny generators. They weren't great, but they gave people hope with the small amounts of power they were able to generate.

The people seemed content... mostly. There were still those who whispered, glared resentfully, and questioned. Where exactly did Mathias and his group go every night? Why were they the ones who got to make the decisions? And why did that child of a girl, Lynna, get to decide who got to go down below on scavaging trips? And why did they think they could trust these Top Dwellers?

The questions turned to unease and distrust and spread through the new village, so much so that a shadow followed Mathias one night. He was too tired to notice when normally he would.

He opened the hatch and climbed down none the wiser to having been seen

Lynna lay on her back with her feet up on the couch. "Ugh, my feet hurt so much! Do you know how many trips down I made throught the shaft systems? It's so much longer than just going down through here!"

"Yes, but safer and less likely to cause suspicion," Gray signed, watching her in amusement.

"I have no idea what you said, Gray, you are upside down to me right now," Lyna pointed out, twisting her neck a little to look up at him.

Peter laughed lightly "he said its safer and doesn't cause as much suspicions" he translated.

They all heard it..the hatch creaking open again...

"Oh, fine, I..." Lynna hesitated. "Uh... Mathias, did you leave the door open?" she asked cautiously, starting to get to her feet.

Badru frowned and moved to stand by Pepper and Peter. There was danger in the air.

Mathias frowned and got quickly to his feet, grabbing his rifle. He swore he had locked the latch behind him. He was awful tired though.

One of the town guards stepped into view "so this is where you lot hide out every night. Holding out on the rest of us..."

"Oh, hey," Lynna said weakly.

Jonah stretched and walked over. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be guarding the actual town? Being a town guard."
