Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

Mathias winced and groaned as she helped him sit up "fuck" he grumbled under his breath, pressing a hand to his ribs. His breaths were sharp and pained. "I'm ok." He wiped the blood from his mouth but accepted the water.

"Where are you hurt?" Misty asked gently "going to do my best to patch it up"

Lynna snorted as she helped him hold the canteen. "Yeah, because broken ribs feel fantastic, don't they? Are you cut anywhere?"

"Ribs, I think. Something slashed me, but I'll be alright," Jonah grunted. "Others need help more."

Mathias smirked a bit "eh, I've had worse" he said "don't worry about me" he said, brushing it off. "Where the hell are we?"

"Not much to do for the others" she said shaking her head "come on let me see" she coaxed and started to lift his short to have a look at the damage

"Top Dweller jail as far as I can figure," Lynna said, wincing as the wind picked up. "Scott is gone and a few of us are banged up, but it looks like you got the worst of it. We only have the canteen for water, and it looks like the rain is coming soon."

Jonah hissed in pain but let her move the blood-soaked cloth. His ribs were slashed in two places, deep enough for a glint of bone to show through. The good news was the ribs themselves were not broken.

Misty wasn't phased by the blood and damage. She had some medical training. This wasn't hood though if she couldn't get this cleaned and sewn up it could get infected and kill him. She patted down the pockets of her jacket and was pleased to find they hadn't gotten everything. A small sewing kit. Just needle and thread and some spare buttons. "This is going to hurt like hell but I need to stitch this up Jonah.."

Mathias looked up frowning deeper "we need something to jeep us dry or we'll freeze out here" he grimaced as he pulled off his jacket "weave this through the bars" if they all could donate a piece of clothing they might have a chance to keep most the rain out.

Jonah sighed in acceptance. "Don't suppose we managed to keep some liquor? Some good Jack Daniels to deaden the pain or at least my brain?" he asked without much hope.

"Are you sure?" Lynna asked as she took the jacket. "Maybe if we huddled together under the jackets?" She was already starting to do as he asked even as she questioned it, though. "Why would they leave us here to freeze to death?"

"Afraid not...can't reach the supplies" she glanced towards the packs then back at him "best I can do is give you something to bite down on"

"If its the clan I'm thinking it must be...they just want to kill and eat us anyway" Mathias answered "we're just animals to them they don't think about us freezing for example"

"I'll take it," Jonah grunted. "What do you have?"

Lynna froze in mid-wind. "Wait... they... they are cannibals?" she whispered in hoarse horror. "Please tell me you are joking! That's supposed to be one of those myths people tell kids to keep them from wandering off out here!"

She dug into her pockets again until she found a piece of a branch she had picked up to show Gray. The bark in particular was an interesting color. She stripped off the bark and pocket that before offering him the stick

While he mentally prepared she threaded the needle

"Oh goody. Back to being savages," Jonah muttered. He took the branch in his teeth and clamped down tight. Closing his eyes, he took a few deep breaths. "Ready," he mumbled.

Lynna worked rapidly and managed to get everyone's jackets and any other spare articles of clothing. As she worked on the final wall, she hesitated, staring out. "What about the other Top Dwellers?" she asked quietly.

~~

Gray's communications device beeped. He picked up his headphones and listened intently for a few moments. He responded rapidly then turned to see if Pepper was awake.

(Sorry forgot Mathias before)

"They don't see it as cannibalism but yes...they are" he said then looked put the gap at the other top dwellers "those are from a different clan. I've been working on trade negotiation with them.." by the look of it. The ongoing battle between the clans was going very badly

She nodded and set to work. The only good thing about this was that the cuts were clean so it made stitching quicker and she had done stitches before and could handle it.

--

Pepper was awake still but Peter had curled up and fallen asleep in her lap. She was still softly humming and stroking his hair soothingly

"Are they going to die?" Lynna asked, trying to get a better look at the huddled beings.

Jonah hissed once then fell silent as he tried to keep his side from tensing up. Don't... move!

~~

Gray softly snapped his fingers to catch her attention then signed, "I have news."

"Well...if we can't figure a way out we all will" Mathias said. Not sugar coating anything. "Best we can do is try to arm ourselves and rush them when they open the cage" though he and Jonah didn't look capable of much rushing at the moment.

Misty worked as quickly as she could without being sloppy.
When she finished she stripped more of her shirt to make bandages and wrapped them around him to help keep the wound shut. "Best I can do until I can get a proper med kit.."

--

Pepper looked up when he snapped, stopping mid hum to pay better attention. She gave a silent nod for him to go on

"Arm ourselves with what? Misty's sewing needles?" Lynna asked dryly. "Not to mention with our added protection, they are going to know something is up. We'd better have a plan or something good." She frowned at the ground. "I wonder... do you think they extended the cage underground?"

Jonah took a few shaky breaths then finally took the deeply bitten stick out of his mouth. "Thanks," he said brusquely, his eyes squinted in pain.

~~

"The Trade Crew I contacted found evidence of Mathias' Crew and were able to follow them for a short time. They were forced to stop when the storm began again and had to find shelter. They have promised to continue the search right after the storm passes," Gray explained. "I am sorry I cannot give you better news, but there is the fact that they have no reason to believe Matthias is anything other than alive." He decided not to mention that they had found one body they had hesitantly identified as the leader due to the insignia on his coat.

"Wouldn't count on it" Mathias said "they are called top dwellers for a reason" he said before coughing more blood into his elbow after trying to get in a deeper breath of air

Misty nodded wiping her hands on her pants "here drink a little" she held the canteen out for him "I'm sorry I couldn't do better..."

--

Pepper nodded, better than finding him dead she supposed but there was still a tight knot forming in the pit of her stomach "thank you" she signed back "best we can hope for right now.."

Lynna watched him worriedly. "Um, do me a favor and don't die, please. I really don't want to try to carry this lot through without you."

Jonah took a few sips, wincing, then handed it back to her. "It's more than I expected. Maybe hang that up where the rain can get into it."

~~

"I will keep you updated, but you should take Peter to bed," Gray signed in return. "I have to stay here."

Mathias smirked "I'll do my best Lynna but...if it came to it I'm sure you could" he encouraged. The fact was. He didn't know how long he would last.

Misty nodded a little and rigged it up best she could, just before the thunder clapped and echoed off the cliff wall. Misty flinched at the noise

--

Pepper nodded before she sighed "thank you for letting us stay. You're a good friend"

"Well, don't you dare put it to the test," Lynna scolded then winced at the sudden thunder. "Why does it have to be so loud up here!" she groaned, putting her hands over her ears.

Jonah made himself as comfortable as he could then gestured to Misty. "We should gather everyone up. Either in the middle or in a corner. To try to optimize warmth. Mathias should be in the middle. Can you arrange that?"

~~

Gray patted her shoulder. "Come again when you can. Come if you need anything at all."

"It's not always so loud" Mathias said, closing his eyes a moment.

Misty nodded "I think I could do that" she looked over at the other two "we should huddle together, share body heat. Mathias you stay put the less you move the better" she looked back at Jonah "think you can manage moving?"

--

Pepper gave him a nod and said softly "I will...thank you again" she scooped the sleeping boy into her arms to go

Lynna grunted then looked over to Misty. "I'll sit on the outside. If Jonah can move, he should be next to Mathias."

Jonah winced as he worked himself up to his feet. "I've got it. Where do you want me, Misty?" He slowly walked toward Mathias.

~~

Gray watched her go then sighed softly. He turned back to his equipment and tried raising the Trade Crew once more. Silence. Only silence.
