Valentino almost ignored the call, assuming that whatever he was being called for was shady. He didn't have the highest of opinions on Baron and his circle.

Instead, Valentino grabbed his phone and put it on speaker as he answered. He cleared his throat, uttering only one simple word immediately after.

"Yes?"

"Valentino?" a voice crackled through the phone.

Wherever Bastien was, his reception wasn't that great.

"The Scions hit us hard. Nieve's dead, and we've got more that are in bad shape over here. We need you to come in. Meet us at Reinhard's."

The older wolf sighed a very deep sigh that seemed to last an eternity. After a moment of silence he nodded his head. He knew it was going to be something. It wasn't shady so far, but it wasn't a call he wanted.

"Okay. Let me grab my things and I'll be on my way. You can fill me in when I get there." He told Bastien, standing from his seat to get his things.

He was a mortician, but only because he needed solitude. Had things gone differently in the pack he might have put his medical skills to better use.

"Be careful out there," Bastien said before hanging up.

Pacing. Lots of pacing. And Drinking. Alfred estimated he had walked the same distance of a half marathon within his meager apartment. He was not oblivious as to the fact that something bad was happening, and his inability to assist with it tormented him. While he was sure his absence would no doubt anger many, his argument was sound. He'd been given an order to stay inside, and he complied with the order. Surely following the instruction of those above you qualified as a type of loyalty did it not?

He was not sure, and he drowned the thought with alcohol.

It was shortly after 4am when Alfred's phone rang, a call from Bastien.

He picked up the phone, hand trembling as it rested in his palm. He bit down on his lip to calm the nerves.

"Alfred speaking." He answered, a scab already on his lip.

"It's Bastien," a voice answered over the phone. "How quickly can you be at Reinhard's?"

"Quickly enough I imagine." Alfred answered.

"Alright, meet us there," Bastien answered. "Try not to draw attention, and keep a gun on you."

"Gun, Got it. I'll be there soon."

He couldn't have cursed himself out more.

Going out to drink, leaving his phone at home. Shitty mistake- one he didn't make too often. Well, he tried not to.

It looked like he arrived home just in time for a ring. He swept it up in his hand and answered it.

"Hey. Hey, what's going on?"

"Ulrich?" Bastien's voice asked over the phone. "Fucks sake, where have been. Never mind, is everything alright over there?"

as written by Sentry

"Yes everything's alright- why wouldn't it be? What's going on?"

"The Scions hit us hard," Bastien explained. "We need you over at Reinhard's as quickly as you can. Swing by Snow's place on the way and pick up Raquette and Sophia."

Ulrich's fingers twitched. He almost dropped the phone.

"Gotcha," he said, hanging up.

___________

It was a fast drive. Ulrich pulled up right in front of Snow's place and started pounding on the door. He sent Raquette a quick text. "Oi!"

The knocking caused Raquette to jolt upright, and she moved quickly to peer out the peephole of Snow's front door. She quickly unlocked the door and opened it when she recognized her packmate.

She typed into her phone. "Our ride, I assume?" Then, turning back towards the apartment, she typed another message. "Come on, Sophia. We're going to the place your father is."

While at first Sophia stubbornly remained where she was while Raquette went to answer the door, the promise of going to see her father was all the encouragement needed to get her out from under the couch. Another complication was soon to arise though as she squirmed her way out from under the couch. Once free of the confines of the couch, the pup's fur began to recede, leaving Sophia standing awkwardly behind it.

She wiped an arm across her eyes as if she was tired, or upset. Or perhaps both.

"That's right," said Ulrich, gazing after them. "C'mon. We need to move quickly. Do you know what's happened? Bastien sounded real concerned."

Raquette swiftly moved back towards Snow's bedroom, scooping up another of his shirts. She instructed the young girl to lift her arms so Raquette could pull it down over her, eager to usher her out the door.

She managed to type a few quick sentences. "Nieve's house was molotov'd. Probably more places hit. I know a few of our people are injured." She chose her words carefully. After all, she didn't want to worry Sophia any more than necessary.
