Chronicles of The Omniverse Archived Lutetia City: Valentine Park

as written by Ronin

"Blegh," the detective made a face, "this is getting us nowhere. Keep em' here, tinman. I'll be right back." He moved towards a small crowd of onlookers. "Hey!" He flashed his badge. "Inspector Paul Berengar. I need you to answer a couple questions..."

As the detective got to work, the paladin kept everyone together. He nodded at Izaic affirmation.

"Of course, proselyte. Garoux are Lutetian citizens just like any other." He folded his arms over his breastplate. "But knowing who you're dealing with is important, especially where the supernatural is concerned." The paladin didn't elaborate further - indeed, didn't seem to give any reason why this was the case. Elliot and René might have noticed the brief glare he gave them as he sized them up again.

"Never hurts to be careful..." he nodded, voice lower. He seemed to be talking to himself. "...especially in light of... recent circumstances..."

The paladin looked back at Cal. "You're saying you didn't hit this boy?" He gestured to René. "That this young man-" To Elliot, "-just came out of nowhere and threw you against a fence without provocation?"

"Soft kitty, sweet kitty, fluffy, fluffy thing." A soft young girl's voice chimed before laughing playfully.

Wavy, frizzy rusty auburn hair fluttered about the form of a young teenage girl. She held a small tabby plush cat toy cradled like a five year old does her dolly. She hummed softly as she strode towards the statue in the park. She wore black 3 inch platform gothic style boots that laced up to her knees and a pink frilly trimmed white cotton dress. Lucid peridot green eyes stared out at the park with glee as she hummed, meandering aimlessly.

Elliot met Izaic's eyes with a mix of apprehension and appreciation. Whilst the proselyte had made clear his personal views on wolves, he supposed that it was worth appreciating that despite them, he seemed more interested in justice than persecution.

It didn't exactly make him feel comfortable. But the fears he'd had about the entire incident being turned around to incriminate him were at least somewhat assuaged.

"I assumed it was you 'cause you were barely a few feet away after I heard him yell," Viv noted. "Nothing to do with your size. And I don't generally go around assuming everyone's a bigot, so if the shoe fits..."

She shrugged.

"And I wasn't going to do anything," Elliot muttered. "Except warn you off."

"A few feet off? I was ten feet away when I heard the kid yell. Twenty by the time the wolf grabbed me. No, I didn't hit the kid." Calixte lied with a shrug, utterly comfortable with it, even giving a wry smile to the cop.

"Since the yell sounded like surprised anger, I didn't think anyone was hurt. I didn't turn around, had no idea what happened, and then Boom! Up against this ticket booth right here." Cal patted the wall where he had ended up dangling, almost affectionately.

Then he pointed at Viv, "Let's get another thing straight. I am not a bigot. My grandfather is a werewolf, my mother hates 'em, and I don't give a rats ass one way or the other. I call that one," indicating Elliot with a tilt of his head, "'Wolf' and things like that because I don't know his name, and don't really care to, unless we are pressing charges."

He pivoted to Rene and Elliot then, raising a brow, "Are we, by the way? Because if you guys go after me, I'll go after you too. If you let it drop, so will I and we can stop wasting the officer's time."

Upon reaching the statue, Isi reached up and touched the statue in awe of its beauty.

"Quite pretty huh Re?" Isi said softly. "I wonder how it would look with flowers on her head Re." She said softly. "But it is so tall to climb and so smooth."

She sat down at the base of the statue and held the plush tabby cat toy before her giving the toy a confused look.

"Aw, come on Re? You have been so quiet lately. I feel so lonely without you speaking." She whimpered at the stuffed cat.

She sighed in exasperation at the lack of response from the plush tabby she was affectionately calling Re. She cradled the cat toy in her arms again and pulled her knees under her dress.

"I am always alone without you Re." She whimpered, her voice sounding more of that of a five year old plea to a parent for attention than that of a 13 year old girl.

Valentina had heard about the events going on at the park and the more she heard, the more desperate she became to being able to go see what all was going on. Finally, the little vampire decided it was time to stop wishing and start doing. So, the child pulled on her favorite outfit, a purple dress that made her look so adorable and like a nine-year-old child despite the fact that she was most definitely not an innocent kid. Running her fingers through her lavender hair to push it out of her dark purple eyes, Val nodded before whistling for her white kitty, NomNom. As she stood there waiting for him to join her, she debated on whether or not to wear her jacket to cover up her wings.

Finally deciding it was best to hide her appearance as much as possible, she slid on the harness that fastened down her wings before tugging on the black hooded cloak over, fastening it up before tugging over the hood. She was experienced enough to be able to hide her fangs and her flesh had enough color that she could easily pass for a human. Grabbing NomNom, she caught a cab and took it to the park. Once there, she paid and slid out, moving through the entrance gates with a gleeful giggle.

"How did you know he was a Garoux to begin with?" the Paladin asked Cal, "did you have prior dealings with this boy?"

The detective returned soon after. "No one knows anything beyond the point where you-" He pointed to Elliot, "-grabbed the big guy and shoved him up against the fence. Even if he did hit your friend, going after someone after the immediate danger's gone isn't justifiable. You could be charged with battery. As for you-" He turned to Cal. "-I ain't exactly inclined to believe that this fellow just walked up and shoved you against a fence. You call him 'fur-face' and a 'beast', but he doesn't exactly look like the image of Raragnon to me. Just a kid who was worried about his friend - a friend who does have a fresh shiner on his face."

"Fur-face and beast..." the paladin mused, "...certainly not the words of a bigot, I'm sure."

"It's up to you how you want to proceed," the detective continued. He looked at René and Elliot. "If you want to keep the accusations in place, that's fine. We'll take you down to the station, get stories from everyone involved, talk to other people around the park. Make an investigation out of it." He looked at Cal. "And if you want to press charges for battery, that's fine too. Enough witnesses to back up it up."

He scratched his chin. "Or. Seeing as how no one was seriously injured, you both can just be happy things didn't escalate farther than they did, shake hands, and salvage the rest of the day as best you can." He shrugged. "Up to you guys."

Elliot stiffened at the prospect of charges being put against him. He didn't doubt that they'd stick, given his experience with the law thus far in relation to werewolves. "Whatever," he grunted, glancing at René.

The boy sighed. "Yeah. It's not worth it. Not like it'd go anywhere." Not like they could afford any legal fees, either. And he knew how much Elliot's mum would freak out if she heard he was in trouble with the law, after what had happened to his dad.

The two teens looked far from happy with the outcome, but neither of them fancied their chances at pressing charges, given the lack of clear witnesses.

Cal shrugged at the paladin's questions, "My sister used to go to school with him, and when our mother found out, she freaked out over kids being exposed to the disease. She freaked out again today when she spotted him at the festival."

He gave a surly grimace, and grumbled, "Anyone can get grumpy when being accused, and those names are no worse than what they've been calling my mother."

Calixte didn't seem to be in any rush to shake hands, but he nodded in agreement about letting things drop. "Things are much fairer now, but it was only twenty years ago that Gramps got life in prison for a traffic accident where someone died. Just because he shifted to save his own life. I don't think that I'd want to go through the courts system with that illness, no matter the cause."

Then he hesitated, not sure if he wanted to do something fair or not, but then he grimaced again and gave Elliot and Rene a concerned look, "Mother was having one of my brothers print up some flyers. They are bound to be inflammatory. You might want to change your clothes or something before they get passed around. Wear a hat at least. Both of you."

Slipping through the crowd, Valentina skipped along the path, her lavender eyes taking in everything that she possibly could. Grabbing her parasol, she popped it open and put it over her head, it frilly and girly just like her. NomNom mewed beside her, making sure to keep beside her. Her pace slowed when she reached a few people gathered in a grouping and instead of eavesdropping, she kept on going, mostly because of the Paladin and the tension coming from the group. In truth, she wasn’t sure if she was even allowed to be at the park since she didn’t ask, but most likely she’d be back before anyone missed her.

“Can you believe all these people, NomNom?” Val whispered, leaning down to pet her kitty who just mewed again in agreement.

Jimmy was still incredibly shaken up after the visit to Al and Cal’s, mostly because of the visit from Savien and the officer. He couldn’t help but muse on what had been said as the cab returned him back to the monastery. That night he had snuggled up against Arien and remained there until morning where his sire taught him as much as he could in a short amount of time about using glamour to hide his fangs.

“Actually, sir… can you take me to the park instead?” Jimmy smiled at the cabbie while practicing. The male nodded and he turned the corner, heading instead to the Valentine Park. Paying once they reached the park, he slid out and moved through the gates, wondering if any of his friends were around

"We're just going to leave," Elliot muttered, glowering at Cal. It seemed that attempt at an olive branch wasn't going to cut it for him.

"We are?" René blinked, frowning. "But-"

"No. We're going. Principles aren't worth you getting punched in the face, Ren. I don't care any more. I shouldn't have come here. Let's just go play games at my place, or something." The young werewolf looked defeated, but resolute. He'd clearly made up his mind that staying wasn't an option.

"...alright." René sighed. "I'm sorry. I sh-"

"Don't. Apologise, I mean." Elliot managed a wan smile. "It wasn't your fault. C'mon, I think we're done here."

Unless otherwise kept by the paladin and police officer, the two boys turned and started to make their way towards the park's exit.

Glad to be out of their stuffy uniforms and comfortably in street clothes, the trio walked onto the fairgrounds. Under the watchful eyes of the Masters, Brothers, and Sisters at the Monastery, the girls had to be careful what they said or did, but out on the town, it was a comparative free-for-all.

Souci flipped the blue side of her hair out of her face as she blew a big pink bubble with her gum. The sunshine felt so nice. The rooms of the Monastery always felt kind of cold to her, even in the summer. The warm rays were soaked up by her ratty black tee shirt, swaddling her in comfortable warmth, like a hug.

The girls stood, facing down the row of tents and rides. Vendors, food trucks and stalls, games, attractions of all sorts were dotted about the park, and among them the rides were scattered. Undoubtedly unsafe contraptions they were, but they made for good fun, and it wasn't every day that the carnival was in town.

Souci turned to Mia and Neera. "Where-to first? Food, rides, fortunes," she leaned over and nudged Neera with her elbow. "flirting..." she said with a smoky voice, winking to Mia as she did.

Mia was beyond tickled that they were out and about outside the monastery walls without having to sneak out, despite the danger that was all around them. The sun, something that she never could get enough of warmed her blonde hair, giving it a sun kissed glow while her exposed shoulders were starting to get tan. Twirling around a little, she glanced at her elongated legs, hoping they also got darker since she was so pale. While her shorts were a lot shorter than what was truly allowed, the teen knew nothing would be said here.

“Mmm… check out those smells!” Mia’s stomach roared, it clear that she wanted to get some grub first.

“Let’s get something really small to eat, then hit the rides, then games, then fortune person all before the shooting contest. And of course… flirting!” Mia grinned at Souci, returning the very happy wink. “Speaking of flirting, there’s Jimmy.” Mia nodded towards the lanky male teenager, fully aware that he had been bitten by his father a while back.

Neera smiled serenely at Souci, and then at Mia. The look in her eyes said it all.

I'm going to kill the both of you.

"Food sounds great." she finally agreed, gesturing for the pair to walk ahead of her. She wasn't about to let them walk where she couldn't see them. Frankly, it wouldn't be the first time these girls had tried to get her into some kind of trouble. She slid the sleeves of her forest green blouse up to her elbows, her bangles clinking against one another as she moved. She wore loose-fitting pants, made of a soft fabric that hung off of her hips.

In the meantime, she looked towards Jimmy, her smile faltering a bit as she looked him over. She didn't know Jimmy too well, more because her friends had been so insistent on having her talk to him in the past. At the same time, Mia had mentioned the attack, and for the first time in a long while Neera found that she was unsure of herself when it came to talking to him. It felt awkward.

We're trying to learn how to be Lutetia's protectors and these two goombahs are busy trying to set me up with someone.

Souci leered at Jimmy and then grimaced, scoffing at Mia. "Don't be stupid, you know he's not the right type. And this is me we're talking about. I practically don't have standards when it comes to guys." She shook her head vehemently. "Nuh-uh. He's bad news."

Unsure of whether or not he had seen them looking at him, Sou threw in a quick change of subject: "Race you to the nearest food trucks!" she shouted as she took off, giving herself a head start.

Once she had gotten the food -- a big order of cheese fries -- she took a seat at a nearby picnic table with the others. Even in the summer heat, the melted cheese was steaming. She put pepper on the fries closest to her and helped herself to the platter.

"So," she said through a mouthful of food, "once you take the silver, you're supposed to take a vow of chastity and other crap, right? How many of the Sisters or Brothers do you think hold to that vow? I mean, going the whole rest of your life without ever getting into someone's pants sounds like actual hell. If it were up to me, I'd sneak a quickie in before going out on a patrol, considering you never know if you'll come back alive or not."

“I wasn’t insinuating you go flirt with him or anything, Neera, just pointing him out.” Mia smiled innocently before her gaze returned towards the Proselyte. He seemed out of it, like something was seriously weighing on his mind and part of her wanted to go over and talk with him, but the other part most definitely didn’t. She shook her head, just waving as he glanced over at the trio, though she note his wave wasn’t very enthusiastic. Why wasn’t he with his friends?

By the time she realized that they had been challenged to a race by Souci, Mia was left behind. Frowning a little more, she finally shook her head and took off behind the others, sitting down at a picnic table, still a mile away. Between the werewolf attack at the events and everything happening around Lutetia, Mia wasn’t quite sure if there was a way to turn the tables in their favor. She wasn’t stupid and knew that there was a war coming and a lot of them were going to die. Before she drifted too far into depression-land, the teen glanced at Souci, brow arching at the choice of subject.

“Well, my opinion is… it’s stupid to get into a relationship once you’ve taken the vows and are sent off on patrols because if you do die, you would leave someone behind. I don’t know about just sleeping with people all willy nilly, but I can’t imagine not doing it at least once.” Mia shrugged a little, watching Jimmy near their location, though she wasn’t sure if he was coming towards them or hoping to find some of his friends. Either way, she hoped things didn’t turn ugly.

"Oh for heaven's sake the two of you." Neera planted herself on the end of the bench that Mia had selected for the trio, her arms crossed her legs folded gracefully beneath her. "It won't be the end of the world if you've never had sex. I heard it leads to all sorts of unpleasant things like disease and pregnancy." She wrinkled her nose.

She was giving Jimmy the side-eye in the mean time, watching his approach. She could tell that Mia was keeping an eye out for him as well, but for the life of her she was having the hardest time reading what the other girl was thinking.

"And yes, leaving a loved one behind," she seconded. "It's miserable to be that person, I assure you. Best just stick to your duties. It's an honorable thing we're learning to do, regardless."

"Yeah, but like... Doesn't it increase endorphins? What if you go into battle together but you get frisky before...?" She thought about it a moment. "You know, that would probably be more distracting from battle than anything, really. Never mind." She took another fry, "Still, I couldn't imagine going a whole life without knowing what it's like." She glanced at Neera, "and it doesn't have to lead to those things. I hear there are ways or something."

Souci scoffed, "you know, it's funny. I get it, we're not supposed to 'do the do,' but there's more to those bits than just sex. I mean, how confused were you when you first started bleeding. Periods are normal, non-sexual things that happened, and we were sorely unprepared for the first time. I told the Master when I went to the bathroom during class, found out I had started, and came back, and she just sort of shoved a pad in my hand and turned me around. It's like they're shy of the subject or something. It's stupid, if you ask me."

A stark contrast to his casually dressed classmates, Luca made his way through the crowds of the Aurellae in full (and immaculate) uniform. For one thing, he owned few in the way of other clothes; the monastery-provided allowance was small, and he rarely spent it on anything that could qualify as a luxury. Largely, though, he saw the festival as a place where they ought still be representing the Order - and not just in the tournaments.

He almost didn't recognise the trio of girls, nearly walking straight past them on his way to the shooting tournament. He did notice Jimmy, however, and in the process of pausing to flash the older boy a small smile of greeting, he glanced over at the nearby table he seemed to be approaching.

And promptly did a double take.

Hesitating, he realised that carrying on now that he'd clearly recognised his classmates would be rude, and somewhat reluctantly approached. "Ah, good afternoon," he offered stiffly, making a point of not looking at any of the more revealing attire on show.

Sweet Selene, did those even count as shorts?

“I hear there’s things called condoms to keep disease and pregnancy at bay. Besides, once you get pregnant, you can bet your butt you’ll be booted out of the Monastery like a bear in a ballgame.” Mia grinned, grabbing a fry before sniffing it. Shoving it into her mouth, she tried to remember the last time she had anything to eat. Did she eat breakfast? Yeah, the teen was pretty sure she did. Shrugging at nothing in particular, she grabbed more fries, glad that Souci bought them for the trio.

“Getting sexy during battle-time is not a good idea. But! Like, coming home after a battle and going to a bar or something and then getting frisky… maybe that wouldn’t be so bad! Like a victory lay or something.” Mia snickered a little, knowing that what they were talking about was utterly ridiculous because vows were vows.

“Yuck, do we really have to talk about this? I mean, I agree that not knowing about periods and other humanly body stuff is kind of crappy, but most of our teachers are like hundreds of years old and their parents and the church didn’t teach them, so it’s just something that isn’t talked about.” Mia paused, another fry halfway to her mouth when she spotted Luca. Now, there was someone worth flirting with, not saying Jimmy wasn’t hot, but at least Luca hadn’t just been munched on.

“Hey, look… there’s Luca. Looking good as always.” Mia nudged Neera before raising her hand, waving it frantically. “HEY LUCA!!” Mia shouted as he walked over to them, glad that he had decided to not ignore them.

Jimmy just nodded towards Luca, about to say something, but his mouth promptly closed at the shout coming from Mia. He shook his head, covering up a slight snicker and just paused in his walking, incredibly curious to see how it played out. He hadn’t been stalking to the girls, not really, but he was hungry and was hoping to at least find Inarin wandering around the food area. His hunger wasn’t necessarily for food, but since he needed to keep up appearances, he thought it best to at least get a funnel cake or a corn dog or something. Ordering a corn dog and funnel cake, Jimmy balanced the two as he headed over to Luca, Neera, Souci, and Mia.

“You participating in the shooting event, Luca?” Jimmy questioned, mentally grumbling since he had been kicked off all events.
