Peace for a Price (1x1)

"It is likely that because his majesty grew up with the knowledge that Castle Stardale is a, shall we say, working castle that it did not even occur to him that you would think that you would settle there," Lance said graciously. "After all, there are many other castles, and while some are held by people like her ladyship, the Duke, but others are maintained by stewards in the event of someone important needing a place to stay. We will not be seeing those, of course, unless you desire to."

"I... Will go wherever lord Eleazar says." She said, in a gentle yet firm manner. "The route the king has chosen is the correct one, no need for any additional stops."

She assured, and wasn't lying, and even excused the king's choice to not provide as much information as she would've desired at first.

Of course, that didn't mean she was completely happy, but she didn't let that show in her exterior.

"Either way- Thank you for choosing to come with us during the trip, it is always good to have someone to speak to while his highness is busy."

Lance smiled faintly. "It is an honor to be considered at least a reasonable distraction, Princess. It is my hope that as you continue here, you will make more friends, as friends are truly a blessing. If you ever have need of anything, here or on the road, I do encourage you to ask. We all wish for you to be as comfortable as possible wherever we are."

She shook her head a bit. "Good company, not distraction." She corrected gently, opening up a bit for Lance, she was sociable after all, she just hadn't chance to be that for a bit due to how stressful everything since the wedding had been.

"I appreciate your concern sir Hearthrune, and I will remember your offer. Though I must admit that I may finally be feeling at home within Cravonid. I had a word with the Duke and many of my concerns have been eased."

She looked towards Eleazar with a bit of suspicion, not because he'd done something, but rather, she wanted to make sure he wouldn't come over while she spoke what she was about to say.

"I am aware you are his most trusted... Yet I do need to set down a worry in my heart and expect you shall not him. Meaning, I want you to help me and keep it secret... Could you do that, sir Hearthrune? I promise it is not something harmful for lord Eleazar. In fact he may.. Like it, but I would like it to be a surprise."

Lance smiled, pleased that Malisia was already feeling at home, but, and perhaps it was his paranoid king's voice in his head, he could not help a tiny niggle of his own suspicion. It had not even been a full week, most of that either preparing for a party, during a party, with the king, or traveling. How could she possibly already feel at home when she had not yet even had much time with either the land or the people? Perhaps she only meant she loved the scenery. That he could understand. The scenery around this area was beautiful.

Then she asked her question in a rather roundabout way, and he raised his brow with curious suspicion. "I will agree to keeping your secret as long as I deem it appropriate, yes," he agreed cautiously. "What sort of surprise are you intending?"

"You see, I had two things in mind- One might be more possible than the other. Firstly, I was reading about the local flora, and had the king explain what the common crops were... I won't go into that much detail, but I needed a few specific seeds, and a place to plant them- From my knowledge, with enough specific breeding within these plants, I could make something worthwhile that the king may find use for."

She nods to herself, not realizing she may be acting too ambitious.

"The- Other situation. I found out his highness likes Rocs. The bird species I mean. He mentioned not seeing one personally... And although their nesting patterns tend to be a bit difficult to trace, given the season, and how mountainous the terrain of Cravonid is, I have a suspicion that we may be able to see at least one if taking an alternate route, though of course this is unlikely- I would like to get a feather for him. Back in Valeskiar, folk treasured the feathers that rocs left at the bottom of cliffs as a religious item, but here it may just be, something he'd enjoy, perhaps...."

Malisia caught herself rambling too much again, but she didn't ask for forgiveness, she simply took a deep breath, and looked at him with, shame of course, but a clear desire to get what she wanted.

"You have put a lot of thought into this," Lance said, sounding genuinely pleased. "The plants and seeds will be no trouble to procure for you. I can get as many of those as you like. Tell me what you desire, Princess, and I shall obtain it. As for the roc... you are aware of the creature's aggressively territorial nature and its occassional diet of humanoid flesh?"

Malisia seemed relieved that he didn't deny her desire for the seeds.

At the mention of the roc's habits, she didn't show any sort of surprise and worry, she was well aware of it.

"Yes, sir Hearthrune, that is exactly why it is considered sacred in my kingdom of origin. The old habits tell the tale of rocs, children of the seasons- Of course, we do not call them rocs in my home, we call them Haberepgier. Habere meaning son and Pgier being our Godess of fertility and weather... I recognized the bird from a statue that was gifted to us. Getting a feather is a sign of bravery of course, but mainly, devotion." She clarified.

"Of course I'd not dare go near one. But the bird tends to leave its feathers at the bottom of cliffs and valleys close to the place it made its home. If one is respectful, and quick, then, the danger should be minimal."

She sighed, realizing that it was likely that neither Lance or Eleazar would allow her to set herself in such danger, despite her being confident.

"In terms of... Seeds, I suppose carrots would be a good place to start. If I manage to work a good portion of them, I may be able to add other plants without seeds, like potatoes to the list too, seeing that his highness finds them appealing. If those work, well, only time will tell what else would able to grow here with the proper care."

"I will consider the possibility of visiting the roc," Lance told her carefully. "I do not wish to dissuade her majesty, but I must take the safety of this entire group - not to mention his majesty and you - into account. However, I do happen to know of an area where a roc nested last year. That is not a guarantee that it is there this year, but there is a chance. It is not far outside of our preplanned path. It would add perhaps two days to the journey, but the views are beautiful even if there are no rocs. If it is possible - and safe - I shall do what I can to get you close to the territory to retrieve your feather. Will you allow me a day to think it over?"

"As for your plants, I believe it is a marvelous idea! I would be most honored to be included in this endeavor of yours. I am not certain how long it will take me to gather these seeds as I am not intimately familiar with agriculture, but I shall work as quickly as possible. Would you prefer that I get them to you before you move into your new home, or after?"

Malisia's eyes lit up with joy at Lance at least considering the possibility of accepting her request, she nearly threw herself at him to deliver a hug, but she did her best to keep what was left of her dignity, and simply bowed, in a deep, grateful manner.

"Thank you, truly. Take the time you need to consider it- And, I would like to receive the seeds after, for the sake of them being as neatly preserved as possible, it wouldn't be great to carry them around without a proper place to plant them." She spoke, with her smile returning just as it had been before, too focused on explaining her plans to look at Eleazar or the duke.

"I owe you two favours if things go as planned, sir Hearthrune." She nodded to her own words. Valeskian tradition was clear about how transactions worked, kindness was important of course, but if one received help from another, then they were in debt until they managed to complete the next favour. Of course, this led to a loop, since completing it, meant the other person would now be in debt, this was not mistake, but instead, a way to make everyone cooperate and build their lives around the group.

Lance dipped his head genially. "I hope you will forgive me for saying this, Princess, but we are all still in your debt for what you have done for us. For Cranovid and for Valeskian. It will take a bit more than seeds and potential feathers to repay what it is we owe you." He straightened. "I will ensure that the items you want are ready for you by the end of your trip."

Eleazar finished his conversation with the Duke and walked over, nearly silent in his movements. He glanced between Malisia and Lance with slight curiosity. What could they be talking about? He was attempting not to listen in as there were a lot of conversations happening in this room right now, and it was difficult to listen to just one, but he still caught the tail end of what Lance said to Malisia as he approached.

"Are you helping her to furnish the castle before she has seen it?" he asked Lance, not really caring if that was the case but somewhat doubting it.

Lance smiled at his king. "No, Your Majesty, though that would not be such a bad idea."

Malisia smiled softly and bowed to Eleazar as he approached.

"Nothing to worry about your highness. Merely catching up on what our destination was." She said, not giving more detail, she wasn't lying, they did talk about the trip, and besides, she hated liars, but keeping the rest of their discussion hidden was not lying.

"I was about to ask you my lord, but since you were busy, and sir Hearthrune was here I thought it was appropiate to ask him instead- Anyway. What is next on today's activities your highness?"

A quick question, to turn the topic of conversation somewhere else in a graceful manner.

"Ah, yes, that is good," Eleazar nodded, trying to remember what he'd told her about their path. There had been too many conversations lately. He shook it off. Maybe later he would trace it out on the map he'd given her. He turned his attention back to Malisia. "I do not think there was anything officially planned. It has been a long trip trapped inside a carriage, so I assumed you would desire to rest a bit. If not, there are some gardens to explore, though not much, and the town has a few things of interest."

"If you wish to go out on the town, please ensure you take at least two guards with you," Lance warned. "The majority of the citizens are highly supportive of this union, but there are always a few troublemakers looking to make political statements or merely money."

Malisia understood, and, thought it might be better not to bother Eleazar too much and let him rest, maybe she would go out, but, nothing she planned in the present time.

"Thank you for the advices, I will remember to do so." She said to Lance before focusing on Eleazar once more.

"For the time being I might just study the art along the walls, I hope you won't mind, your highness?"

"Of course not," Eleazar assured him. "That is what art is for."

"Indeed. Art that is ignored is a truly sad thing," Lance agreed. Then, with only a hint of slyness, he suggested, "Why do you not show her around, Your Majesty?"

Eleazar stared at him, caught by surprise. "I... do not know much about art," he said slowly.

"You do not need to know it well to enjoy it. Is that not right, Princess?" Lance asked with a smile. "And besides, you know the layout of the castle very well. That is very important as it is easy to get lost."

Eleazar's eyes narrowed. He knew what Lance was doing. "Yes, I can show you around, Princess. There are some lovely images on the walls," he agreed, his jaw somewhat tense.

Malisia smirked a bit, but tried not to make it too obvious, it didn't go over her head the fact that Lance had bassically pushed Eleazar into walking with her, even though what she had meant was that she would go on her own, she did appreciate it, but she wasn't so sure the king did.

She bowed to Lance once more and thanked him with a gentle smile.

"Thank you once again for your company sir Hearthrune. I'm sure you have things to discuss with his highness later, I will make sure not tire him too much."

Rather than taking the king's arm or offering hers, the princess extended her hand and offered it to Eleazar. Walking hand on hand would be nice, but of course, if he didn't accept, she would not complain or show any sign of being upset.

Eventually she walked with the king regardless of them having contact or not, and looked at the works done in the walls of the castle, not saying much at all, keeping Eleazar more than anything, unless he said anything to her first or she found something she considered worthy of his time.

"I will be happy with whatever scraps you return to me, Princess," Lance said, bowing to her.

Eleazer kept his expression neutral, but he would be having words with Lance later. He turned to offer Malisia his arm only to see her offering him her hand. He hesitated, conflicted, but could not bring himself to that sort of extended skin-to-skin contact. He ended up dropping his arm and holding his hands behind his back as they walked.

He did not say much at first, instead guiding Malisia to a hallway with some of the most vibrant of images painted and carved into the walls. The castle was almost entirely rectangular, which made for some very long hallways, and this one had several doors on one side but a blank wall on the other, making it the perfect canvas for large, scrolling pictures. Some were people posed in various tasks, all of them draped in swaths of of colorful clothing that floated around them like clouds. Others were animals. Most of them real, but a few were mythical, for even in this land of "monsters," some creatures, or at least certain representations of them, were still myth.

Eleazar relaxed a little as they walked, allowing himself to enjoy the colors. He really did not know much about them, but there was a certain flowing beauty that seemed impossible to create out of carved stone, yet here it was.

She took a deep breath, admmiring the works that she could only guessed had taken so many hours, days, maybe even weeks or months to materialize into something this beautiful, inmortalized in these walls and showing her the mythos that this kingdom held.

Some were familiar to her, some weren't at all and made her curious, but she kept her questions for the books she'd later focus onto during the night.

Malisia didn't release a single word from her lips, keeping her hands neatly folded in front of her, walking slowly and carefully through the impossibly long hall, well, impossibly long for her, Valeskiar's castle could never even hope to compete with the structures of Cravonid, it could barely be called a castle, if anything, it was a larger than usual manor, the structure didn't have any defensive positions, and the art that it held within its walls was, well, pitiful, jewelry and other junk that her parents kept to brighten up the place, protected by "guards" who were young men who had next to no training and knew how to use a broom better than a sword.

Her train of thought was interrupted as she turned to look at Eleazar, with an oddly, piercing gaze, not because she was trying to be agressive, or intimidating, or anything similar, but rather, because she was speaking in a serious manner, with interest instead of the usual forced attention she held around him.

"My lord, I was told you are a warrior." She paused, "Could you tell me about it? Your victories, I mean."

For the first time, Eleazar flinched at a question. His wings tensed, arching for just a moment to lift themselves slightly off his shoulders. Among his kind, not that Malisia likely knew, it was a literal fight or flight response. It happened in an instant, and then they were back on his shoulders, the claws hooked at the front like an ornate clasp as they always were. His face, always hard to read thanks to his skin, was tighter than usual. He said nothing as they reached the end of the hallway at last. He turned the corner without thinking and walked down another. This one had only doors on either side but was shorter, and he knew they'd be past it soon enough.

"My victories," he said at last, his voice low, "are every battle in which I did not fall. My victories are the fact that my grandfather's kingdom still stands as a united country and not as a bunch of loose rabbles scrapping what living they could off the rocks." He stopped for a moment, knowing Malisia meant no harm, but it was a question that probed at a still-healing wound and had taken him by surprise.

"I suppose you do not know much of the wars that happened here in Cravonid. We are a civilized country now, or as civilized as can be expected. We even have a few traditions as a country and not just within individual clans, but in the time of my grandfather, it was not so. We were exactly what other people theorized and spread rumors about: monsters fighting monsters. We were driven here by humans, but that did not foster any comradery between us. Just the opposite, in fact. In some places, we were no better than animals. Two races went entirely extinct as far as we are aware, and humans came often to poach us like animals. It was not until my grandfather nearly lost his son, my father, that he had enough. My grandfather began taming the clans around him by force, at first, until others began to see the power we could have by joining together against the human enemy. We still fought each other more than we fought humans at first, but gradually, as my grandfather's clan grew, others began to see his vision and joined willingly. We could protect ourselves against humans and develop something better than a wild wasteland. Yet, my father still died at the hands of humans."

He paused, lost in memory. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet. "I was still young when I first stepped onto the battlefield. I cut my teeth on a blade of steel, and it is not something I would wish any other child to see. There is still strife along some borders, but the last ten years have been the most peaceful time our people have ever seen. That peace is a victory more precious than any gold or jewels, but it is not a victory I hold alone. I hold no victories alone. I am but one more blade."

Malisia listened to him, saving as much information as she could in her mind, not to use it as a weapon, but to remember it, learn from it, and somehow, be of help despite her limitations.

"Peace has a price..." She said, sounding cold at first, but quickly continued. "...But lives, are a price no one should ever have to pay for it."

She stopped walking for a moment, looking at the floor deep in thought before speaking again.

"I am sorry. For bringing up such a harsh topic. The last few days have been- Strange. I am not sure what, it means for your people that you have finally married someone, your majesty. But whatever it is they think, I hope it brings them peace..."
