After the funeral dinner, Mystique sat quietly through a long boring spiel that was called the Reading of the Will of her rich grandfather. Two sisters, 2 brothers and five cousins got their shares of the wealth whether it was a house, sports car and/or money. It was now Mystique’s turn. An envelope was given to her which had a single key in and a note inside. Her siblings crowded around her to see if she got something better since Mystique was the favored grandchild.
“Give me some room to breathe! You wouldn’t understand the note anyways.” She replied in an irritated voice as she tucks the envelope and will in her purse.
The argument went on for several minutes until the lawyer cleared his throat.
“If anyone argues about the will, that person will forfeit $10,000 per 15 minutes. Do you wish for me to void those checks?” he asks quietly.
Everyone went quiet then stood up to leave. The lawyer spoke once more
"If you wish to have your check signed, please stay seated. Miss Mystique, there is nothing more for you except the copy of will. You may leave now." The lawyer spoke as he held out an envelope to her.
Mystique smiled through her tears as she accepts the envelope. She was glad to leave alone to catch her own thoughts. She began to make her plans as she walked to her waitressing job. Things will go better for her now. But she would wait for a bit before she quits. Her lease was due to be redone and she was sure it was going to go up once more and her friend, Amy, wanted her apartment anyways. Her so called family was still sniffing around to see if she would give in and tell what she had got in the will.
Two weeks later…
Mystique walked into the restaurant with her notice, much to the disappointment of her boss. She also, told him that if he made it rough on her, that she would walk out. He simply told her to leave. Mystique held out her hand for her check. He grudgingly handed it over and was given the apron.
She only stopped to ask Amy to stop by after work as she cleaned out her locker.
Time passed quickly as Mystique went through her clothing and deciding what to take with her. Most of it would be left for Amy if she wanted to buy it or if Amy didn’t want any of it, she would give it to a children’s benefit that was coming up.
Mystique answered the door and told Amy that she was leaving. They made a deal about the furniture and whatever was left over. During the talk, the landlord stopped by to renew the lease. Amy talked the landlord down and extended the lease to a 5-year lease. She rented a move it all truck and was packed to leave by the next day. She was happy and slept well.
Tomorrow will begin her new journey. The first stop would be the bank.
