The Vampire's Apprentice

"Now that is a strange question," Clancy said, frowning. "I cannot imagine a book with the future written in it, so if I did hypothetically turn the page, I imagine I would find it blank. However, if there is something written, I would close the book for fear I would obsess over something pointless and waste my life rather than doing what I could to make it enjoyable and productive."

Kitty nodded. She liked that answer. It was a good answer. The girl didn't point out the possible irony of his last sentence, instead ending with, "I suppose that's three questions."

"I suppose it is," Clancy nodded. "I shall keep an eye on our three guests. Tomorrow... general cleaning, I suppose, but primarily keep an eye on them. If Mrs. Mooney comes first, shall I wake you?"

"It it's close to daylight and you must go, then yes, otherwise I believe you can handle it." She looked at him for a moment. "Unless you really feel the urge to wake me up, but that's up to you."

"I thought perhaps you might like to know more about what happened from her," he said gently as he stood. "I know you care for Norville." He raised a hand and clarified, "as a friend. But I wished to honor that friendship as much as I am able."

"Goodnight, Miss Kitty," Clancy replied politely. He paused in the doorway. "I have a question for you to answer tomorrow night. Think about it throughout the day. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?"

"Because it is about time you got a question to think about," Clancy replied. He smiled and ducked out, closing her door firmly. He worried about leaving it open with EJ. Did he expect trouble with EJ? No, but why offer temptation that could be easily avoided? He checked on the three and found all three asleep, then went to work at his computer.

Sam yawned and nudge Kitty for a couple of pets.

Not much of an answer. He was gone before she could ask again, and the girl decided to let it drop. Still, she had her suspicious. This was an important question, otherwise he would not have had her think about it. And it wasn't the first time travel had come up, either....

Kitty rubbed behind Sam's ear, then slipped into some PJs and cracked the door before she climbed into bed.

If there was one place she wanted to go... where would that be?

She stared at the ceiling, contemplating.

Where would she go...?

For the moment, she decided that place was where she was at, in her bed, and to sleep. Shifting to lay on her stomach, Kitty sighed, but the question lingered in her mind for a long while before she finally closed her eyes and drifted off.

Where would that be?

Clancy watched over the three young ones until the early light drove him to his subterranean refuge. He could have stayed away, but all it would have taken was one careless yank of the curtains, and that would be that. It was better to hide from the light and let Kitty take care of things.

EJ was up first. He folded his blankets and went into the kitchen to nose about the cupboards. The twins slept on, at least for now.

Kitty, who had forgotten there were others in the house, realized it only after she had let Sam outside that morning. At the least, EJ was awake. Silently, she was thankful the twins weren't up yet, but the older boy's presence made her wary. She didn't trust him, but tried not to let it show, always willing to give even strangers the opportunity for second and third chances.

Sam grumbled, still eying EJ distrustfully, but he obeyed and made his way outside.

EJ rooted around until he found some eggs, butter, and bread. "How many eggs you want?" he asked brusquely. He found a pan next and set it carefully on the stove.

"T-two." Kitty stuttered briefly, her head trying to make sense of the question. It felt strange, hearing someone else offer a notion of breakfast, but it wasn't unwelcome. Not what she had expected of him, certainly, despite how much it fit.

"'Kay," he said and started buttering the bread then cut a hole in the middle. Four pieces of bread plopped into the pan, and four eggs - one per bread slice - broke open and plopped into the hole in the bread.

Birds nests.
Kitty went to retrieve a book, returning to the wonderful scent of eggs and toast. It was delicious.

"I don't believe so, but I'm sure I can remedy that." She replied, setting her book on the coffee table and moving to wake the small children if they weren't already up.
