The Vampire's Apprentice

"Hmm, that is quite a scratch up, the lad received," Clancy commented. "I am glad to hear he is doing well, though. Will there be any further intrusion of the other children?" He started to his bedroom, intending to change.

"Hmm," Clancy said, glancing at her before disappearing into his bedroom. He left his door slightly ajar so they might still talk without her being able to see in. He looked over his clothing critically. "I presume she offered compensation for your efforts?" Perhaps purple today. A royal color.

"Offered is not the word I would use," Kitty remained on the couch, not wanting in the least to follow him as he changed, "but yes, you could say that. I did not take anything, however."

Sam, knowing his cue, burped contentedly from his spot on the rug next to the couch.

"I see," Clancy almost chuckled. He straightened his tie and spent half of a second mourning his hat before coming out to join her. "Thank you for doing the effort. It will not be forgotten."

"Later, yes," he said as he came out. "I have arranged for a date, but it is not for another couple of hours." He took a seat on his chair. "You appear to be thinking about something. Would you like to share?"

Later, she would tell him what was really on her mind. For now, she made somewhat of an excuse.
"I've thought about the question you asked the other night." Kitty answered. "You never really told me why you brought it up."

"Indeed," Clancy smiled. "I see the reason of merely asking you a question was not reason enough? Very well, sometime soon, we shall have to move." He paused. "A year, possibly less, possibly longer. We will see."

She nodded slowly. "I thought as much." Kitty glanced down at the notepad, though didn't flip it open. "If that were the case, I suppose I might think on it a bit more than I have. There are many places I'd enjoy to visit, but to live there? It's not quite the same."

"And of course, that might not be the place where we end up going, but I have no exact destination in mind yet, thus thought I would consult you about your preferences," he said. "Perhaps it would be wise to make a short list, also of the places where you would feel most uncomfortable. Now, then, I presume you have questions?"

"Yes, that makes sense." Kitty nodded again. "And I do have questions." She had glanced up briefly while he spoke, then moved to open her thumb-marked page, flipping back a couple of sheets to where her inquiries were written down. Her gaze brushed over them for a moment before settling on one; she looked to see if she could ask.

Clancy lifted his hand in wordless invitation to ask. What would she ask this time? He had ceased to try to guess. It could be anything from "what color are your socks" to "what does the rotation of the planet venus mean to you?"

Clancy smirked at that. "I hope you enjoy black and white movies. That is all I will tell you there. Well, that and he is a character even the great Dracula would be terrified of meeting in the dark."
