The Vampire's Apprentice

Norville used his good hand to indicate the empty chair at his bedside, inviting her to sit if she wanted. "Is Kitty your real name? Like all full and legal?"

She took a seat. "Mhm, it is. Strange, right? It's not short for Kathryne, though I almost wish it was sometimes."

"Kathryne," He said slowly then repeated the name a few times with different pronunciations and accents. Finally, he smiled at her. "Katheryne is a groovy name. I mean, Kitty is a grand name for you, but Kathryne is like a grown up Kitty, all... all..." He frowned as he tried to think of his word, his eyes wandered off, losing focus. He almsot seemed to doze until his eyes suddenly lit up. "Svelte! Yeah, a svelte cat. But still cuddly."

"If only." Kitty sighed wishfully. "I might change it later, if I live long enough. You seem to approve, at least."

"No, don't change it!" Norville pleaded with a mock groan. "I'll never recognize you." He gave her a lazy grin. "If I can life... live... with 'Norville,' surely you can be associated with Katharine Hepburn"

"Hmmm...." Kitty thought about it. "More of the usual, I guess. We redecorated the living-room and got rid of a chair... and a couple of the cabinets need refurbished. Also, my birthday is tomorrow, so that's a thing."

"Shame, I liked those chairs," Norville said, not questioning one bit. He roused slightly with a smile. "Brithday? Con-grat-u-la-tions! You young are you now? Are you going to have a big bash or a quiet little gathering?"

"Wish I could be there," he said sadly then brightened. "But good on you, Kitty Cat! Another year survived, huh?" He moved his bad arm as if to make a gesture or perhaps touch her, but his face contorted with pain and he stilled. "Sorry."

"Why are you sorry? You're still alive, aren't you? That's enough of a birthday gift for me." Kitty stood up. "But I suppose it's about time I let you get back to healing. There are a couple of other things I still have to do today."

Mrs. Mooney was approaching as Kitty was leaving and paused, a medicine bottle in hand. "Oh, you're leaving? Good timing. It's time for his meds, and they knock him out real fast." She reached into her back pocket and pulled out an envelope. "Would you please give this to your employer when you have a chance?"

"Yeah, of course." She took the envelope. "I'll tell him you said hi," Kitty almost winked, but refrained. "Is there anything you need, while I'm going places?"

"No, thank you." Mrs. Mooney then visibly hesitated as she reluctantly changed her mind. "Actually... could you maybe pick up a gallon of milk and a couple of boxes of mac and cheese? I don't have any change on my right now, but I can pay you back by tomorrow evening."

"Thank you," Mrs. Mooney said with a tired smile that quickly vanished. She continued her trek into her son's room, leaving Kitty to see her own way out.

Kitty left without another word, continuing to finish her tasks for the day. With what free time she had left, the girl opted to take a nap.
