The Vampire's Apprentice

"Thank you for that cheery departing word," Clancy said dryly. He walked out, settling his hat on his head as he went. Shopping for cake... he couldn't remember the last time he'd done that. If ever.

"I was serious!" She called after him, then coughed. Of course he could handle himself, she knew that. There was no worry he would be staked, but she thought of it as a nice gesture to wish he avoided it.

Kitty found herself another canned soup and went to bed soon after.

Clancy calmly browsed the store with his little handbasket. He had eventually found the boxed cakes and picked out two that looked like something a human female might like. He fetched the items listed on the back, picked up the apples, and was standing in the frozen food section trying to decide if he should pick up something more for Kitty when he heard the voices. He tilted his head, listening.
"-brat did something, I know it! Killed him just like that, her and that friend of hers!"
Ah, that sounded like one of the punks he'd politely introduced himself to the other night.
"She and him, they need to be taught a lesson. Told why you don't mess with us!"
He sighed and randomly picked out three pizzas in the middle of the price range without paying attention to the type. They all looked terrible to him, but hopefully she would like one of the three. He went to the front of the store and checked out before walking home. How droll. His new pet was being hunted. That was rather annoying, but he would deal with it. He'd hoped the police would find them before they woke and ran off, but apparently not.

She couldn't sleep.

It must have been a short while after midnight when there was an odd THUNK and Kitty found herself on the floor beside the bed. Tossing and turning to the point of falling off, it would seem almost comical had it not been dark outside and she not in the home of a vampire. The girl pulled herself off the floor and sneezed before climbing back under the covers. She still couldn't sleep.

Pushing the comforter away, letting it bunch at her feet, she lay in the cold, open air, considering whether or not it was worth it to find her book and keep reading.

Clancy arrived home and put everything away. He was in the office working when he heard the thump. Not hearing any yells of pain, he finished what he was doing before going to Kitty's door and knocking. "Miss Kitty? Are you alright?"

"I'm fine," she replied. "Nothing broken."

Maybe a book would be a good idea. Oh, bother, she'd left it downstairs on the table. Wouldn't that be interesting to explain.

Kitty opened the door to the bedroom. "I couldn't sleep."

"Ah, well, in that case, perhaps we should talk," Clancy said calmly. "I did discover something while at the market."

Sounded fair. She left the door open and went to sit on her bed again, once more giving her attention.

Clancy sat at the very end of the bed to appear more relaxed than standing staring at her would. "I overheard a conversation this evening. The hooligans were not arrested as I had hoped and are, in fact, roaming free and interested in your blood. I would advise you stay close to home until I can sort this out. Also, I shall need to access the police database to see how the investigation into the body is going."

"You can do that?"

Of course he can do that, you dimwit. He's probably been alive since before the internet was even a thought.

"It sounds practical.... I'd rather not be kidnapped again." Kitty scratched at her scalp for a moment. "Do you think they'll come looking here for me?"

"I happen to have spent some time in a police precint, and I picked up a bit of knowledge there," Clancy said a touch primly. "As for the men looking for you here, I doubt it. They only saw me once, and they have never been close to my house. Just maintain a low profile, I believe is the saying, and all will be well."

Kitty nodded. Something she could definetly try to do, save the nagging thought of their neighbor and the group of gossipers that could likely get her in trouble if she wasn't careful. Perhaps tomorrow there would be a chance to... redirect this lady's attention via cake.

"What do I do if they should find me?"

"If it is at night, call me," Clancy said. "If it is during the day, keep yourself alive and try to get to safety. This house has state of the art security measures, better than some banks. As long as you can get inside, there is a keypad just inside the door. Press the emergancy button, and the house shall comence lockdown."

It was no wonder he'd survived for so presumably long. Kitty figured she'd have to go looking for it tomorrow to make sure she knew where it was.

"That's reassuring," if not downright scary, "though I hope it doesn't come to that." It'd be a shame to consider losing her life at this point. Especially with cake on the line! She bit at her tongue to avoid reacting to the cake thought.

"Do not worry. They have less brains than hired thugs, and you are stronger now than you were before. You will be perfectly fine," Clancy assured her. "And as my familiar, I am duty bound to ensure the only one allowed to harm you is me. You are under my protection." He paused. "That reminds me, I need to mark you."

Familiar?

"
What's a familiar?" Kitty was very confused, hardly hearing the remainder of his paragraph. "And what purpose does it serve?"

"A familiar is, essentially, a slave, pet, or servent," Clancy replied. "Its exact meaning changes a little based on who you ask, and the older vampires view them primarily as pets, so if you are asked by another vampire, be submissive. They are not allowed to order you around or hurt you, but it is wise to be cautious."

"Noted...." What were the odds? She had definetly found what she had been looking for. "How will I know if I meet another vampire?"

So many questions to ask; it was difficult to remain within the practical.

"You'll know," Clancy said simply. "If they want you to know, you will know. Most likely, they will smell me, a vampire, on you, and then test you in some way. They will want to ensure I am treating you properly - basically, a piece of property I happen to be somewhat fond of - and not an equal. They may also prob to see if they can get you to slip and spill my secrets."

That was a lot to chew on all at once. She'd have to remember not to say anything to anyone.
About anything. Or anyone.
Kitty gnawed on her thumb, considering for a moment.
