The Vampire's Apprentice

"No!" She was yelling, unceasing in her attempts for escape. She didn't care how badly this went, she was not to be treated this way. "Let me go! Now!"

The thugs used some very thug-like language as they dragged her toward a dark car. "You're going to tell us who that ******* was that killed Skinner, or you're going to die in his place!" They almost had her to the car.

"Yeah right ya- GAH!! GET IT OFF!" The talkative thug all but threw Kitty at the other one as a snarling beast latched itself onto his leg. The stray dog latched onto the thug, snarling and growling, shaking its massive head so hard the thug couldn't keep his balance enough to strike at him.
The other thug tried to hold Kitty in a bear hug and kick awkwardly at the dog. His grip was tight enough Kitty couldn't get away, but he couldn't connect with the dog at this angle, either.

Ooh, what a lovely mess this was turning out to be. Kitty pulled her knees up to her chest and became dead weight, his grip being the only thing keeping her from the ground. A pretty awkward thing to carry while trying to fend off a dog.

One thug was cursing the dog. The other was cursing Kitty. It was amazing that among all that profanity, anyone heard the policeman yelling for them stop. Two officers stood with guns drawn, pointing at the three.
"Down on the ground! Now! All of you! Whoever owns the dog, call him off, now!"
The thug holding Kitty carefully put her down and laid down. "She sicced her dog on us for fun!"

The dog growled, glaring angrily. He stopped shaking his victim's leg, but he didn't let go right away.
"What's going on here, lady?" The cop asked. It seemed the thugs were definitely bad guys, but she wasn't off the hook yet.

"A kidnapping, that's what." Kitty made no sudden movements. She silently contemplated whether or not to further her story with an account of the last time, but decided it would only dig her into a deeper hole.

"It's true!" spoke up a voice. One of the librarians stood wringing her hands. "That sweet girl comes in a lot, and I saw those two grab her and try to get her in the car. The dog saved her!"
The cops nodded and started cuffing the protesting men. "We'll ask you to come down to the sation later, miss, and fill out a report. Can you get your dog off him, please?"

She exhaled in relief. "Thank you, Miss Bickett. Come, Sam." Kitty called to the dog, rubbing his head gently. "I'll be by tonight, if that's alright, sir. Thank you for saving me."

The cop grunted as he shoved the thugs into his car.
"Are you alright to get yourself home, miss?" the other cop asked.

"Yessir," She beamed up at him. "I'll be just fine. Home's only a couple blocks away, and I've got Sam here to protect me."

The cops nodded as they got in the car and drove away.
"Sam" sat chewing on the pant leg he still held in his mouth as he watched Kitty.

Kitty snickered, and she started walking home again. Boy was there going to be some explaining to do once Mr. McCleary saw the dog. It was likely "cause" for punishment, should she take defending the creature too far, but who could know?
Dry cleaning wasn't to be done for another few hours, so she found herself outside with a hose and some soapy water, giving the mutt a good scrubbing in the meantime. Kitty avoided letting him into the house, only disappearing inside once to place the now-stainless shirts on the table. The rest of the afternoon was spent in the yard, waiting for darkness to finally arrive.

The dog strongly protested the hose, biting at the water and trying to run away. After the bath, he lay in a sunny patch of grass and passed out, snoring his skinny little heart out.

Clancy "woke" and rose from his usual place. The house was empty. He knew that before he even stepped foot in the kitchen. He found the shirts and looked at them curiously. Here were the shirts. Where was the girl?

On the porch with her flashlight and a book. She heard sound inside and looked up, opening the door after checking the page number of her novel for later.

"Ah, there you are, Miss Kitty," Clancy greeted her. "What are you doing out at this time of night?"
The dog jogged up and head butted his way past Kitty's knees, trying to get into the warmth.

Kitty closed the door further to avoid letting the dog inside. She didn't think the beast needed much explanation. "Quite a bit happened today. We've got another guest."
