The Vampire's Apprentice

Sam took off and pounced on the toy. He chewed it excitedly, making it squeak repeatedly. A very proud doggy trotted back with the toy and dropped it at Kitty's feet, looking up expectantly. Again!

Sam ran after the toy and grabbed at it so eagerly, he overbalanced and tumbled head over tail in a heap. He picked himself up, shook himself off, and looked around. The toy was almost directly behind him, and he sniffed in a circle all around. He looked at Kitty and whined pathetically. Where was it?

Sam turned in a circle, looking right past the toy. It was not here! He bounded over to Kitty and started sniffing all around her. She had it hidden! It must be!

She was still laughing, which didn't help her defend against his cold, wet nose as he decided to sniff all around her. In effort to escape, she jumped up and darted forward, snatching up the rubber toy and holding it over her head, a big grin on her face.

Aha! Sam barked and bounced in jubilation. He knew she'd hidden it somewhere! He bounded around her, barking playfully.

Two pairs of eyes from the Mooney side of the fence peered through the fence and watched.

Kitty tossed the toy again, unnoticing of these small eyes watching her. Her thoughts were elsewhere at the moment.

Sam chased after the toy and started to bring it back. Then he stopped and stared curiously at the fence. He tried to bark with the toy in his mouth and only managed an odd, squeaky gruff noise.

The eyes blinked and disappeared. Sam stared for a moment then trotted over to Kitty and offered the toy. Play?
It was only when they thought Kitty was distracted that the eyes reappeared.

Sam ran after the toy and almost lost it again but found it, and then trotted back to her proudly.

A snicker came from the other side of the fence, and two mops of hair appeared over the top.

Kitty glanced in the direction of the fence again. It would have been much more fun to surprise them, but she lacked capability to do that.

Sam followed her glance at the fence. He growled and barked. It wasn't aggressive, more to say, "Alert! My yard! Alert!"

Sam happily ran after the toy.

The two raggamuffins, JC and JP, stood watching Kitty. They gave her twin, devilish grins, their pearly whites gleaming out of dirty faces under wild red hair that resembled miniature bushes. They both wore overalls and one wore a green shirt, the other a blue one, and both were barefoot.

Kitty leaned against the fence, folding her arms over it. "Well, nice to see I've got an audience." She said, trying to muster that cool voice she'd heard Clancy use so often. It sounded a tad strange in her higher tone, so she dropped it. "What brings you two to this side of the yard, hm?"

"Your dog," they said in unison.
"He barks a lot."
"We're not allowed dogs."
"Mum's allergic."
"And they bite."
"The last one died."
"It was sad."
"But Mum was happy she didn't sneeze no more."
