The Vampire's Apprentice

"Hmm, well, there are no flowers with no smell, but some have a delicate smell. The night phlox has a very sweet smell. The evening primrose does not have a strong smell, at least I do not think so, and it has some medicinal properties, if you are into that. Angel's trumpet has a subtle fragrance and is beautiful, but that one is poisonous. There is also a night rose, but I do not know how strongly that one smells, as well as a few types of lotus. Oh, and a couple of types of cacti." She thought for a moment. "I suppose there is also the lady fern. It is a bright green and has no flowers and can grow in caves with little light. Coleus is much the same, but it has many different colored leaves."

"Angel's Trumpets get big, though...." Kitty thought for a moment. "I'll have to see what appears, then. Thank you very much." She smiled, then turned to leave.

It was a little later in the afternoon by the time Kitty had finished. She let Sam outside and sat on the porch, a library book in hand. It wasn't too bad in the sunshine. Not hot, and without a breeze it wasn't too cold either. Distracted by the book, she forgot to wonder if the twins would be over again in the afternoon or not.

Sam wandered around the yard, exploring as if he'd never been in it before, and came back often to check on Kitty. He took a short nap at her feet then romped for a bit before napping again. Then during his second romp, he barked "viciously" at the fence where someone stood leaning on it.

"Hey, Kitty Cat," Norville greeted with an easy, slow smile. "How's it going? The twins wanted to come see you, but Mum said I had to go with."

"Cookies?" squealed two voices. The twins dashed around the fence and dashed up to Kitty. "Thank you, please!"
Norville sauntered around, taking his time. He smiled at Kitty but stood back, giving her space. Sam came over to sniff him cautiously then sat down for pets.

She giggled. "Hold on! I have to go get them, first!" Kitty stood and went inside, returning just a minute or two later with a clear container full of the round things. She pulled the top off and set it on the steps, red plastic lid underneath it.

"You know, I've actually forgotten the recipe's name." Kitty thought about it for a moment. "Something to do with brown sugar, I think. Don't remember."

"They're good!" the boy mumbled around a mouthful of cookie.
The girl was also enjoying her cookie, but she looked at the house curiously. "Where's everyone else? Are they all at work?"
"How come you're not at work?" the boy asked.

"I'm not at work 'cause I don't gotta job I need to go to." She answered, somewhat pleased. There was slight avoidance of the girl's question, though only for lack of a valid reply.

The twins turned to stare at her now instead of the house. "How come you ain't got a job? Are you brain-dead like Norville? Or bad-blooded like EJ?"
Norville was scratching Sam's belly and apparently did not hear the question.

"Nope." Kitty shook her head. "I get paid to do chores, technically." She was starting to get a broader picture of this family than she wanted to have.

The twins' eyes got round. "You get paid to do chores?" the boy breathed. "How come we don't get paid?"
"Cause Mum feeds you and tries to get you a good education, JP," Norville called, effectively labling the boy as JP, and the girl as JC.

She snickered a little. "More like, I get paid to do somebody else's chores. Same as if Norville here went to rake the leaves off a lawn for a person who couldn't do it themselves. That's what a job is, sometimes." Kitty gestured as she spoke.

"Oh, that's not as fun," JP sulked.
JC still looked interested. "Who do you work for? I never saw nobody coming out but you."

"A ghost!" She leaned in quickly and whispered. "A very spooky ghost who gobbles up little children who ask too many questions!"
