The Vampire's Apprentice

Clancy shifted slightly in his seat. "Of course, if you wish to pursue her interest, you are more than welcome to. Just understand she has a large dog and a mean swing if you irritate her."
EJ glared at him and mumbled something under his breath as he sank into his seat.
"Please, do forgive me, Mrs. Mooney, this was not my intention when I invited you," Clancy apologized. "Miss Kitty has told me so much about your family, I just had to make your acquaintance!"
Mrs. Mooney looked confused as if she was struggling between the need to protect her son and acknowledging the truth in Clancy's statement, and she chose an out. "Oh, right, yes, I was surprised at the invite, but, uh, yes. It is good to meet the neighbors."
"Especially a vampire neighbor!" chirped JC.

JC's comment caused Kitty to flinch just slightly. She finished the remaining sandwich crust and folded her hands into her lap.

"Indeed," Clancy said blandly.
"JC, JP, there will be no more talk of vampires," Mrs. Richards said sternly. "So, Mr. McCleary, what do you do?"

Norville looked at Kitty, his plate empty. "Nice crib you have here," he said conversationally while his mother chatted with the vampire.

"Hm? I suppose." She glanced around, considering his compliment a valid one. "It's a pain to clean on certain occasions," Kitty admitted. Norville wouldn't have known enough to understand, but it was a mild jest toward being locked inside for a week with a dog.

"Yeah, I can hardly keep my room clean, let alone a whole house," Norville said cheerfully. "I dunno how girls do it. I don't think guys have the right genes to do what you do, and I'm kind of jealous."

Kitty nodded absentmindedly. Cleaning wasn't something she particularly enjoyed doing, nor did she ever seem to need to do it on her own time, lacking much of anything to clean unless she made a mess. Tidying things saved her from boredom when she was trying to conserve books, so there was that. It seemed to make Clancy happy when things were spotless, which was rewarding.

Whoops. Her thoughts had wandered a bit. She tugged herself back before falling towards the darker memories of the subject. "So... have you heard about that airline food?" Kitty asked, taking a stab at some humor.

"Not really. A fun venture, though." She smiled, remembering the daring escape. "What sorts of interesting things have you done?"

"I don't know. Depends on what you define as interesting," Norville said with a shrug. "We've moved like four times now. Does that count?"

Mrs. Richards glanced at the clock. "Oh, is that the time? Time seemed to have flown by! But certain kiddos have school tomorrow. Come on, kids, time to get home."
"Ah, that is a shame. I completely understand, though I hope you come again," Clancy smiled, rising to see them out.
EJ couldn't get back to the door fast enough, but the twins complained about leaving. Norville stood slowly and grinned at Kitty.

"Don't worry, we won't be!" Mrs. Richards said far more brightly than she'd said anything so far. She smiled at Clancy as he held the door for them. "Thank you , sir."
"A pleasure, I am sure," Clancy purred in response. He watched them go and returned Mrs. Richards' and the twins' waves before slowly closing the door. "Well. I think that went rather well."

"Indeed," She agreed. "I'd make a joke, but I can't think of anything to say that doesn't immediately come off as offensive.... So there's that."
