The Vampire's Apprentice

Kitty shrugged. "Probably something about my surprise and you not scaring them out of their wits. It's too late in the evening for attempted humor."

"If you say so," Clancy smiled. "Now, why don't you go get ready for bed and take care of that dog? He's been whining this whole time. I will tidy up." He turned away. "By the way, you did an exemplary job this evening. Well done."

Hm. She hadn't heard Sam at all. Kitty went to release the hound, snatching another sandwich wedge on her way up. She paused on the stairs and turned back to him. "You did an exemplary job not eating anyone." And then she was gone, laughter ensuing.

"Hmm, maybe later," Clancy murmured, remembering Mrs. Richard's expression as she left. Perhaps he'd turned on the charm a bit too much.

Sam lay by the door, whining softly and pathetically as he waited.

Kitty refrained from mentioning that she'd noticed. What he did, that was up to him. She opened the door to release Sam, scratching the dog on the head.

Sam leaned heavily into Kitty, panting and grinning his doggy grin. He was free! and more importantly, his human was here!

Sam bounded down the stairs and went straight to the door. He understood outside!

Clancy was nearly finished cleaning up. He glanced up as Sam went past then glanced toward Kitty. He waited for her attention, not wishing to interrupt Sam.

"If you do, I would like to thoroughly vet them before they step into the house," Clancy replied. "Also, I will need to know any alliances you form. I am sorry to be so strict, but, unfortunately, as my Familiar, your love life could interfere with my survival."

"Now what gave you the idea I ever liked anybody?" Kitty plopped onto the couch and folded her hands in her lap, leaning forward on her elbows. "The only person ever closer than a friend–" a lump caught in her throat and she swallowed it, croaking out the remainder of her sentence. "–is dead. He's dead."

It took all her nerve not to stand and leave in that moment. The topic was painful and Kitty wished she hadn't brought it up. "Why would you think I liked anyone?" She asked again quietly, pressing her lips together and letting her gaze fall to the carpet. She didn't blush; her expression had gone pale.

He could feel her pain, but he did not press, nor did he allow it to become awkward. At least, not awkward on his part. "Perhaps you do not like anyone know, but you might someday. Forever is a long time to be stuck to a vampire, and I have learned to prepare for the future as much as for the present. It is a shame about your past partner, but in this exact moment, it is better."

"He was my brother." She almost spat the words, but said nothing more. Kitty never thought of having a partner, nor did she want one, but Clancy was right. The future was something she rarely bothered to consider, as her whole life had been spent on daily survival; forever was an empty word.

Kitty stood, moving to the door to let Sam back inside.

"Hmm, not the type of relationship I was thinking of," Clancy commented. "Still... if he were still alive, I would not have taken you as a Familiar."

"NO!" She cried out, turning to face him. Her entire expression was begging him not to touch the topic. Kitty closed the door behind Sam and brushed past Clancy as she headed back towards the stairs.
