The Vampire's Apprentice

"Mhm!" Kitty nodded again. "I think we should be there a little before four thirty if we stop briefly for lunch."

"Nice!" He settled in and buckled up. "Sorry I can't help drive. At least I can chat and pick tunes! And read a map."

"Nah, don't worry about it." She waved it off, hopping into the driver's side. "Frankly, I'm glad you don't have to chance injuring yourself more."

"Yeah," he sighed, fingering his cast. "I don't exactly have a good record going right now, do I?" He gave her a smirk to show he was teasing. Mostly.

She chuckled in reply but didn't say anything more, letting the moment lapse into silence. Lunch and another few hours if driving were ahead.

Norville cowed down on lunch then fell asleep for a couple of hours in the passenger seat. He looked a little pale, and he kept twitching in his sleep. He nearly woke himself up a couple of times, but never fully roused.

Kitty kept what eye on him she could, rightly concerned for his wellbeing. That said, she didn't wake him until after she'd found a place to rest for the night and parked in the parking lot of said place. The girl nudged him gently, trying hard not to scare him into conciousness.

Norville woke with a squeal, thrashing as he tried to escape only to run into the car door. He sat panting for a moment and looking around. Finally, he took a deep breath and let it out in a shuddering sigh. "Sorry. Are we, uh... where are we?" He ran a hand through his shaggy hair.

So much for that plan.... Kitty let her hand fall back into her lap and decided not to comment. "We're staying here for the night, since there's a cave Clancy wishes to see. We can settle in there, and if we've got the time, see what else is around to look at. Sound good?"

Norville nodded. "Sounds good. Do you want me to take Sam out for some quality time, or do you want me to start getting us checked in?"

Norville got out slowly and stretched. "I think he likes me well enough, but you are his person. No doubt about that!" He hobbled stiffly to the back with Sam's leash.

Kitty smiled lightly and left Sam to Norville while she went inside. Something tugged at her, saying it wasn't a bright idea to leave the two alone, but she ignored it.

It was another tired but comfortable motel, as most pet-friendly ones were unless they were completely terrible. A young man sat at the desk dozing. He hadn't even noticed Kitty enter.

Her nose scrunched slightly, the same as it always did when she disliked something, except in this case, it was the faint scent of cigarette smoke that caused her expression. Kitty stepped up to the counter and examined the snoozing figure.
"Excuse me?" She called out, trying to wake the man without disturbing him too much.

"Hmm? What?" the man snorted as he woke. He blinked stupidly for a moment then smiled. "Oh, hey, welcome! How can I help?" He wasn't much older than Kitty by the looks of things.

She smiled lightly and resisted the urge to lean on the countertop. "Heyo," Kitty replied. "I'm here with a friend and a dog, and we were hoping you might be able to board us for the night."

"Two," she answered, perhaps a might quickly. As for the size, Kitty simply shrugged and made a best guess. She wasn't sure how big either were.
