The Vampire's Apprentice

"Riveting!" Norville said brightly.
Sam scratched his neck while they were stopped. The junkyard-type dog was getting a lot of stares and worried looks from the other pedestrians, mothers firmly pulling their children away from him.

Kitty chuckled. She kept Sam on a short leash, making certain he remained by her heels, more for the sake of the looks she was getting than anything else. "I bet there's more further in."

"Then what are we waiting for?" Norville grinned. "Let's go!" He started hobbling ahead enthusiastically.
Sam automatically started following then paused to make sure Kitty was coming.

The tunnel wasn't very long; it let out into the evening sunshine, a U shaped area of the brick building that morphed slowly into a more open area, some odd house-frame-like structures ahead. The path they stood on now had six thick poles, three to either side, resembling those outside a grocery store. To the rightmost wall of the U of bricks were several images in faded blue-and-white, as well as a few people there to observe them. Above the tunnel, on the back-most wall of the U, was the same two rows of windows on the upper stories, and on the opposite side of the small walls marking the exit of the tunnel, doors leading into the structure were present.

Short coral-colored fences made two pockets on the U shape, almost as if to curl the tips of the letter inward. There were benches situated to the right, beside the images on the wall, but not to the left, next to the patch of plants and a shady tree, though most of the shade originated from the large wall of the building directly next to where the familiars stood. There was a pedestrian to the left, enjoying the shade; his bike leaning against the building, energy drink in-hand and half gone.

"Okay, this is pretty cool," Norville said, observing everything. "Do you want me to hold Sam while you take some pictures?"
Sam had noticed the pedestrian and was sniffing toward him curiously. The dog didn't want to get much closer, he just wanted a good sniff.

"Yeah, sure," Kitty agreed, passing the leash to Norville. She eyed Sam's actions with extremely mild suspicion, otherwise thought little of it. The stranger didn't seem to notice at all.

With calm enthusiasm, the girl readied her camera, taking a handful of pictures before looking to Norville again. "Do you feel like being in any of these?" She inquired.

She snapped his image before he had a moment to argue, then smiled brightly. "There. You've been immortalized!"

Kitty giggled. "Okay."
She passed him the camera, taking the photo out and adding it to the collection in her hands, taking Sam's leash back in exchange.

"Maybe you should get a small purs or something to hold all those," Norville grinned. "Okay, scoot left a bit. Now try to get Sam to sit and you're perfect."
Sam was standing with his hind end toward Norville, sniffing something interesting in a stone wall.

"I think I have one," Kitty replied, glancing down at Sam. "It's in a box someplace, though. Sam, sit, silly dog!"

Sam glanced at her and sat, his back still toward Norville.
Norville prepared the camera. "Brown sugar cookie!"
Sam's head whipped around and he shifted to face Norville, his nubby ears perked up. Norville took the picture! And a second later, Sam was standing and looking around for a cookie.

Too perfectly, the photo caught the moment just as Kitty's smile broke into genuine laugher. Such a random thing to say, but it worked.

Norville carefully took the picture and watched as it clarified. "Ah, this is perfect! You look astounding! Oh, and, you look good too, Kitty," he said with a playful wink before handing over camera and picture.

She fake-glared, unseriousness showing in her smirk. Kitty took the camera back, a bounce in her step as she went to stand underneath the frame-like structure. The girl glanced back to make sure she wasn't too far ahead of her companion.

"What's the next step?" Norville grinned, hurrying to keep up. "This place is awesome!"
Sam barked at a pigeon then stood proudly as it flew away.

The path led straight through the strange frame of a house, into an area that held yet another odd framed structure. There were four quarter-dome shaped things resembling the cover of a library book-drop, but these were made of beige concrete and held nothing besides two metal bars near the bottom of each, crossing in front of the open side. What they were, and what they were used for, Kitty wasn't sure, but they were pretty wacky to look at. Three of them were facing open-end forward, arranged in a sloppy, rectangular, compass-like pattern, with the westward dome facing to the left.

On the left side of the open space between the second frame and the first, there was a cluster of eight planters, each with a small tree inside. To the right, a similar setup, except it held flowers. Beyond the flowerbeds was a squat little building that would have been the right size for a gift shop. Gold letters on the overhang read, "Benjamin Franklin Museum." It also appeared that the trail continued further back, if one looked to where people on the right side of the second frame were walking.

"Wow! The actual Benjamin Franklin Museum!" Norville breathed in awe. "He was one of the most influential men on both sides of the Atlantic and full of great wisdom! Even if he was a hound dog." He looked around. "In or around, Kitty Cat?"

She snickered at his hound comment. "I think around," Kitty answered, watching as a person tried opening the door to the museum. "It looks like it's closed." No surprise, considering how late in the day it was.
