The first thing you need to know is that there's things out there. Beyond our world, beyond our knowledge. Maybe it's something you've heard of in stories that you know can't possibly be true. Maybe it's something you had a dream about - or a nightmare. Maybe it's something you can't wrap your mind around at all, something that defies perception itself. If you can imagine it, it's probably out there. If you can't imagine it, it's probably out there too.

The second thing you need to know is that there's places where they can get in.

A Fold is what we call a place where one of these places or things or whatever just up against what we know - our space, our time, our reality. Those places get kind of wrinkled a little bit, and if they rub together too much, the fabric thins and things can start coming through. You better believe that's not a good thing.

You would think there would be something to stop them. Some sort of secret government agency, right?

That's us.

The thing is, usually when people imagine a secret government agency that shuts down unimaginable horrors, they're thinking of the best and the brightest, the highest technology available, rooms full of well-stocked equipment. Those people - well, they've probably never actually worked for the government.

Technically we have an equipment room. It doubles as a weight room. And a supply closet. At some point, someone carefully organized all the shelves - alphabetically. So, if you want "ballistics ammunition," it's going to be right above the boxes labeled "ballpoint pens," and that's assuming we haven't run out. Management has ordered more. It'll be here in six to eight weeks, assuming no further budget cuts.

As far as people, sure, we've got some really smart people. It's just that some of them are kinda broken. Some of them are a lot broken. It happens, after a while, when you're going through portals to esoteric unfathomable dimensions to try to cut them off before they get into the world. Sometimes, you leave parts of yourself behind. Sometimes, you pick up parts of other things. People get a little weird, when they've been with the organization for a while. It'll probably happen to you, too, if it hasn't already.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. We're good at making do with what we have around here, and we've come to appreciate those weird bits that get stuck on as just one of the things that we have. Jacqueline over in Search has a plant growing out of her eye and can see underground root systems. Bruno in Sever had six counts of possession, but, you know. We Don't Talk About Bruno.

You get used to it. You can get used to anything around here.

Let me take a minute to tell you about the organization charts. We've got two main divisions: Search and Sever. Since this is a government organization, they're technically the Authorized Scouting, Research and Certification Division and the Control and Closure Operations Specialists, but, you know. Everyone calls them Search and Sever.

The Search teams are the ones that go out there first. They'll be the ones hitting those unexplored areas, getting a very first look at whatever is out there, and trying to make it back with enough information and enough of their faculties intact that we can send someone out and do something about it.

The Sever teams? Well, they're out for blood - or ichor, or ectoplasm, or whatever it is that leaks out of the Folds. Their goal is to go in there, put a stop to whatever is trying to get across, and then get out and lock the door behind them.

Now, organization is all well and good, but being a government agency, we're pretty much always shorthanded, so what that means in a practical sense is we're often sending in a team composed of both groups, to do as much as we can in one shot. No one likes going in blind, but if we're on an apocalyptic timer, we sometimes just don't have a choice.

We've also got the site staff, of course. Your basic boring people who don't cross the borders - though we all know the Emergency Shutdown Protocol, just in case. Accounting, administration, all that. People like me.

Oh, did I not introduce myself? Harry Township. Okay so technically it's Harold, but no one on my side of seventy goes by Harold. Can you imagine Harold Potter and the Chamber of Secrets? I didn't think so.

I'm the administrative assistant. That means I fill out paperwork, but have to find someone else to sign off on anything. Mostly, though, my job is to know where things are. Ballpoint pens? Third shelf on the left in the equipment room. Rifle? They're all out right now, but Dave from Accounting goes deer hunting on weekends and keeps one locked in the trunk of his car. Dave from Accounting? Office 389-A, he'll be in at 9:17. Yes, I know he's supposed to be here at 9 like the rest of us. Management lets it slide because he actually got the government to sign off on that grant last September.

Okay, hopefully I've covered everything pretty well, but if you've got any questions, feel free to ask - and if I don't know the answer, I'll check with management for you. I'm sure we can find someone who'll have the information you're looking for.

So, now that we're done with that, let's fill out those forms:

Employee Intake Records

What's your name?

Your preferred pronouns?

And, uh, how old are you?

Great, thanks. Can I get a quick physical description for our records?
However you'd like to describe yourself is fine. Oh, you have a recent photo? That's fine, too, we just need to know the name of the photographer just in case they saw something they shouldn't.

What's your preferred division? Site staff isn't hiring right now, so you'll be either Search or Sever.

What would you say is your greatest strength?
No, don't list eight things, just tell me the one thing you're really good at. Everyone's good at something. People who are good at a lot of things usually aren't as good as they think they are, so let's just stick to one, okay?

Cool! So, how'd you find out about us - or how did we find out about you?

And, one last question - sorry if this one's awkward:

Are you weird?

You know. Hiding a tentacle or you've got one of those skeletons in the closet that's a little more mobile than most or you can do that thing with the coffee. I know it doesn't seem like a big thing - they never are. If it were a big thing, well, you'd be what we were employed against, not someone employed with us.

It's okay. Sometimes people get weird, when they've been exposed to a portal. That's what we're here for. We just need to know ahead of time, that's all.

You're not required to be weird, by the way. You might end up that way, after an excursion or two, so, you know, it's okay if you're normal for now. Like I said, it's just for the records.

So, before we wrap this up, was there anything else you wanted to tell me?

A quick little OC on this one:

You're part of an underfunded secret government agency that goes through portals to weird places where things are very strange. There's gonna be a lot of strange stuff out there, maybe a little horror. If you (the writer) have any specific triggers or phobias that you'd like me to avoid, just let me know and I will do that. If you don't want to share publicly, you can DM me on site or on discord. I want this to be fun for everyone, and while I very much look forward to freaking out the characters, I don't want to do the same to the people behind them.

I will be hard limiting character strengths and special abilities - you get one, or you can be a normie and pick one up later. The organization is meant to be underfunded and underpowered, but with a lot of room for characters to grow through active RP.

Your CS can be any style, but please make sure to include all the information in the interview above. If you just want to copy/paste the interview questions and answer them, that's totally fine by me. You can also add more information about your character if you have more you'd like to say. If you have any questions, feel free to ask - either here, by DM, or on discord.

Name: Dahlia “Doll” Chavez
Pronouns: She/Her
Age: 33

Appearance: Doll is a mixed Black/Spanish woman with a dark complexion and wild black curls. She has a perpetually startled expression, her eyes a little too wide and jittery, as though she’s had too much caffeine. Most strikingly, her right arm has been replaced with that of a marionette’s; it is predominantly pale wood, with ball joints and a smooth curve for a hand.

Division: Search. Sever if they need a medic, but she’s not a fighter by any means.

Strength: Medicine - Doll is a trained paramedic, but her memory is a little foggy and she doesn’t quite remember if she finished medical school or not. The records say she has, and she remembers enough to be useful here, but not enough to start her own practice or anything. Regardless, she’s brushed up on her field medicine, and hopes to help get everyone back in one piece.

Weirdness: Doll’s arm isn’t a prosthetic. The wooden marionette arm has bonded with her skin, and wouldn’t be removable even with surgery. She checked. She isn’t able to move it the same as her normal arm, but it’s poseable, so she can work with it. Sometimes, though, she swears she can feel it start to twist on its own. It’s probably nothing.

Radar: She doesn’t remember the day she lost her arm, or the day she got her new one. For all she knows, they could be the same day, or weeks apart. All she remembers is stumbling out of the Fold and getting escorted back to the agency. The rest is a blur, but she chose to stay. To help the people here, instead of trying to salvage a sense of normalcy she isn’t sure she can connect to anymore.

Too Late to Worry About my Sanity

What's your name?

"Emiliano Maurice Mendez Solis. Emil is fine too, most of my friends called me that when I was younger, so did my family, really it all started when I was a kid and we went out to watch a movie with my old folks on my bir- Oh, you just wanted a first and last name? My bad."

Your preferred pronouns?

"He, him, those are fine- They, maybe? Does it count if I have something living behind my eyes?"

Please focus on the the questions at hand... How old are you?

"Sorry, sorry- I am nineteen. "

Great, thanks. Can I get a quick physical description for our records?

"I suppose I am quite unremarkable. Wavy black hair- Yes, I dyed silver highlights on my hair, what of it? Anyway, I'm kind of thin, not super muscular or anything, kinda pale... I really don't have anything else to add, can I speak about my eyes already? I mean, its the whole reason you brought me here..."

Please wait until the end of the interveiw. Thank you.

What's your preferred division? Site staff isn't hiring right now, so you'll be either Search or Sever.

"Research, I guess? The person who got me here told me research would be the only option for me so- Research, yahoo."

What would you say is your greatest strength?

"Teamwork- Okay fine, I get it, not an acceptable answer- So uh, I have a good mental fortitude, really good actually. Put me out there in the field, I can handle it."

Now, how did we find out about you? You can now speak of the incident.

"I fell into what you would call 'a portal'... I was lost, a few weeks. While I was searching for an exit, something crawled into my ear and, now its behind my eyes, and, my tongue, it feels like its pulling onto my muscles and nerves but, its not necesarily harmful, according to your doctor, who by the way, looks super duper untrustworthy. I can read things now, speak them, things in portals and so- No I do not what they even mean. I mean, I can translate I guess? But it's not like I can understand the nonsense I see. But you said I was valuable... That's it I suppose."

Anything else to add?

"Yeah actually, do you have any options without lactose in the food you give us? The thing in my head really got pissed last time I ate a slice of cheese, I really want to keep my brain intact, thank you."

What's your name?
"Rene is fine, full name Wendy Rene Lock usually sign W. R. Lock"

Your preferred pronouns?
"Mam, sorry stuck with me during service she her is fine."

And, uh, how old are you?
"Inlisted at eighteen, currently twenty three."

Great, thanks. Can I get a quick physical description for our records?
"If i was to describe myself like I would a target...five foot seven Caucasian woman with red hair commonly in a pony tail hangs to mid back. Approximately hundred forty pounds, physique of a soldier. Subject seems to lean towards a form of business casual attire when not in the field. Side arm open carry all times seen her, would expect knife on her as well. Green eyes hint of freckles underneath them. Dog tags appear to frequently be around her neck, to many to just be hers. Keepsake presumably of brothers in arms."

What's your preferred division? Site staff isn't hiring right now, so you'll be either Search or Sever?
Sever

What would you say is your greatest strength?
Loyalty...told myself to be a ride or die for my squad. Lost them. Rule applies now to any new team."

Cool! So, how'd you find out about us - or how did we find out about you?
"No intel could prepare us for what opened up. Myself and four other marines were doing an op. Search and Sever units found just me...sorry file will clear up the details. Id rather not delve into them again. Took about a year to recover, came here soon as medically cleared."

Are you weird?
"Yes. Something about the portal made my knife, we will say graft to me. Think of it like a tumor if that tumor was a pocket of iron? Point is I can move it about my body or arguably summon it. It looks crude in nature. Metal alone nothing for things like comfort or ergonomics. Having said that it is a extension of me, I can move the iron from hip to hand. I can't however throw it. I cant just remove it. And I can only hide it so much..."

So, before we wrap this up, was there anything else you wanted to tell me?
"Do to the knife I've an iron deficiency i need to mmaintain. Easy to work around but figured I should put it on record. Other factors work related I'd say I'm a good shot. Non work related I've a kitten at home. I'll need help getting proper paper work to help sort where said kitten Bullet goes should something happen to me."

"What's your name?"

"Vex Stryker."

"Your preferred pronouns?"

"Any. All. None. I’m Vex. That’s all I need. "

"And, uh, how old are you?"

34. 35 in March.

"Great, thanks. Can I get a quick physical description for our records?"

"Only about 5’8”, average build. Oh yeah, I’ve got no face– We’ll get back to that."

"What's your preferred division? Site staff isn't hiring right now, so you'll be either Search or Sever."

"Sever."

"What would you say is your greatest strength? No, don't list eight things, just tell me the one thing you're really good at. Everyone's good at something. People who are good at a lot of things usually aren't as good as they think they are, so let's just stick to one, okay?"

5b370f8a33e9aef29a0e79f68b30e13c.jpg"Look, I’m good at going in and getting the job done. And, yeah, I got a bit of an anger issue. I think I’m pretty entitled to being angry. Pretty good at using whatever weapon you want me to learn how to use– Can improvise too, if all I got is my own hands."

"Cool! So, how'd you find out about us - or how did we find out about you?"

"Found you after one of your groups nearly fucked up and needed a helping hand. Apparently that’s a 'no no' for civvies."

"And, one last question - sorry if this one's awkward: Are you weird?"

"You see my face, right? Yeah, well, this mask—it is my face. Take it off, and underneath? Smooth as a baby’s bottom. No nose, no dimples, no nothing. Used to have a face, sure, but some... thing crawled out from one of the folds opening up and decided to take it. Wandered for days after, blind and mute, until a buddy of mine slapped this mask on me. Said the blank slate was creeping him the hell out. Funny thing? It worked. A little too well, if you ask me."

"So, before we wrap this up, was there anything else you wanted to tell me?"

"Yeah, no. Am I in?"

What's your name? Astrid Kaede

Your preferred pronouns? She/Her

And, uh, how old are you? 21, baby!

Great, thanks. Can I get a quick physical description for our records?
Got something wrong with your eyes? I'm not describing myself. Here’s a picture and it was taken by your mama.

Fine, it was taken by some twat for some company named… NiphionArt. Here's a link too. https://i.etsystatic.com/45561235/r/il/eb6bbe/5545929212/il_1588xN.5545929212_isi2.jpg

Want anything else like a blood sample? Geesh.

What's your preferred division? Site staff isn't hiring right now, so you'll be either Search or Sever.
I don't serve people, so I guess search.

What would you say is your greatest strength?
I'm really good at being cool. Not the answer you wanted? Fine, I'm really good at controlling things with my mind. Grin

Fine, I'll going to be serious. I promise. I don't know man, I'm just me. Maybe that's my strength. I'm good at integration into groups because I'm just me!

Cool! So, how'd you find out about us - or how did we find out about you? Do I really need to get into it? A friend of my roommate's boyfriend was playing a dangerous game of portal hopping and I watched him turn into this thing and well… I'm the one that put him down because he went a little… uhh, psychotic.

And, one last question - sorry if this one's awkward:

Are you weird?
No, I'm probably way too normal. Like, almost boringly normal. Or well… is it weird to want to be weird?

Can I get to work now?

Just as an FYI for people, I think I am going to try to respond weekly to whatever has been posted, especially while we’re in the intro phase. That way I can answer IC questions that other characters may have been curious about as well - so I’ll get something up Monday-ish to reply to everything so far. No worries if you don’t have time to get a post out before that; I know several of you have a lot going on right now. Just tag in when you’re ready!

What's your name?

Jessie Pierce…. Most people call me Jessie, but my friends call me Jess. Ahem..sorry, I’m a little nervous.

Your preferred pronouns?

She/Her, or… yeah whatever. I don’t really care. I don’t get offended easily.

And, uh, how old are you?

27 years old.

Great, thanks. Can I get a quick physical description for our records?

I am in peak physical condition, so you don’t have to worry about that. I work out all the time. I have to. My health is paramount. I have black hair and green eyes. I am Caucasian. I’m about 5’5. Here is a picture done professionally by Open Art AI. I like this picture. I’m wearing my favorite color.

I would prefer to be in Search. I have been told I’m easy to talk to, which would come in handy when searching for … whatever.

What would you say is your greatest strength?

I have experience in spy work. For three years I worked with the government on counterterrorism, gathering information, monitoring communications and conducting surveillance. I am good at blending in and have excellent social skills. I had to leave due to getting hurt on the job. I miss it. I’m ready to get back in the game.

Cool! So, how'd you find out about us - or how did we find out about you?

A friend in the government.

And, one last question - sorry if this one's awkward:

Are you weird?

Umm, well I do have one thing. It’s kind of weird, but I don’t think it will deter me from doing the best job that I can. I, uh, have a high pain tolerance. A very, very, high pain tolerance. Yes, it was an issue when I was young and would hurt myself regularly without realizing what I was doing. My parents told me that I was born with a rare genetic disorder. It wasn’t until later that I realized my parents had lied to me and that I had acquired this pain resistance from a fold. I’ve learned coping skills over the years that help keep me alive.

So, before we wrap this up, was there anything else you wanted to tell me?

I can’t think of anything. If something comes up, I’ll let you know.

Okay, so I like the scope, but we already have Dahlia as team medic. Since this is a “one main skill” RP I’d like to make sure people aren’t taking over other niches that are already claimed. There’s no rush, so take your time, look over what characters are already posted, and let me know when you have a chance to come up with something that someone doesn’t have claimed. Also, please wait until your character is accepted before posting to the main thread.

I’m happy to answer questions if you have them!

Would it be ok if Jessie was hired as an investigator, not medic? She knows medical stuff as part of growing up without pain to help keep her safe, but she didn't graduate. I can take off the medical stuff in the interview questions, but still have it in her background?

Edit* I took off the part about her greatest strength being medical knowledge.

Nope! The "you get to do one thing well" is a really big part of this RP setup, because it's designed so that the characters are going to have to struggle and not always have the best person for the job. Investigator is a great role to take - I don't think we have someone focused on that yet - but she'd need to lose the medical background for that to work out.

Ok! I made another change on my character’s profile. It should not show that she was exceptionally talented in any medical fields. In fact, she flunked out of medical school. :)

Okay, so that's a start, I think I had thought you were going more for an actual-detective-background rather than a girl-next-door-blending. As it is, that's pretty similar to what Faithy's character Astrid has going on. You see where I'm going with this - so I'd like to see some background that really sets her apart from the other characters that have already been posted so far. It might be a good idea to spend some time reading each of those CSes and maybe jot down some notes on what they do so that you're not ending up overlapping.

Name: Henrietta "Henry" Lawson
Pronouns: They/She/He
Age: 24

Appearance: Even before their exposure to a Fold, Henry was tall and thin, with sharp features and wide eyes. Now their pale skin is mostly covered in a layer of cobalt-blue feathers. The ones along their forearms are a lot smaller and sleeker, sticking closer to their body. At their upper arms and chest, the feathers get thicker and less sleek, some sticking out at odd angles, especially if they get worked up. Their hands and feet are still human, although they end in small talons rather than nails. Henry has shaggy blonde hair that curls when it reaches the base of their neck with several feathers peeking through from their scalp. They regularly dye it a deep midnight blue to fit the color scheme they have going on, but they aren't very good at it. As a result, their roots are almost always visible, and their hair is a mess of different shades of blue streaking throughout.

Henry also has a pair of large wings emerging from their back. They're similar in color to the rest of their feathers, with patterning on the back reminiscent of a blue jay. They tend to keep these tucked up against their back, as walking around with your wings out is the fastest way to knock stuff over. People tend to get upset about that. Or maybe they get upset about their wide, solid black eyes which never really show where Henry's looking? Who knows!

Division: Search. The downside of having bird bones means that if you take one strong hit you're likely to break something.

Strength: Recon - Henry may not be properly trained in observation and searching, but they're arguably built for it. Before their exposure they were always particularly good at picking their friends out from a crowd, at picking apart sounds in crowded rooms, dissecting every instrument in a song. Now they're much, much better at it. Plus, getting a bird's-eye view of the area certainly helps.

Weirdness: Henry is part bird. Well, at this point they're mostly bird. No, they don't have a beak, but they do have hollow bones and a proportional set of wings that make it really hard to sit in chairs properly. Their eyesight and hearing both improved dramatically due to their transformation, and while they don't crave small rodents quite yet, they usually have at least three packs of sunflower seeds on their person at any given time.

Radar: It was just an ordinary day for Henry. They were out exploring things with their friends when one of them found this weird crack. It went way deeper than the brick wall it was embedded in, so of course they were all idiots and squeezed themselves in. They didn't expect to find a massive forest in a crack in a wall in the middle of the city. Unfortunately something screamed in the trees above them, something far too animal to be a bird, and far too human to be an animal. Their friends scattered, and Henry was the only one who managed to run back to the crack they'd come through.

They didn't think much of the scratch on their ankle when they got home, uncharacteristically quiet and locking themselves in their room. They pretended not to notice the sprouting feathers on their leg the next day, but eventually they couldn't hide it any more. When your child starts sprouting feathers and complains of something threatening to burst out of their back, that information tends to get into the right hands. It took two long, painful years for the transformation to finish, and another year before they were cleared for official operations. Rather than wanting to shut them all down instantly, Henry wants to explore these rifts, to find out what's going on in them. Maybe they're hoping to find the one their friends went to, but if they have a further plan than just joining the Search team, their blank eyes and wide grin aren't telling anytime soon.

Just a quick update for those not on discord, I have been really sick the past few days. Posting will be delayed on my end for a while.
