How Green Becomes Wood

"I think we challenge each other and help make each other more well-rounded people," Sloan shrugged, "I mean, our house would have an absurd number of protein-based items but I think we'd both be really high achievers together."

Xander considered this opinion for a moment before shrugging and nodding. "All right. You've got a point there. We could have a pretty power-couple dynamic. But what would your mother say?"

"You could always elope," Alec grinned while Rumy laughed.

"So you're not Jewish," Sloan shrugged, "You'll convert, and in our culture the kids are raised in the mother's religion, so it's fine anyway."

"And she'll hate whoever Sloan marries anyway!" Claire added, grinning.

"Well, there's a problem right there, because I have zero interest in converting," Xander drawled.

Rumy snickered. "Right, well, while you two hash out your first fight as a couple, I'm going to get going. See you later!"

"Bye, Rumy! Have fun with dehydrators!" Alec called, waving happily.

"All right, then. When you get out of college, look me up, and we'll get a marriage of convenience," Xander said, offering his hand. "Marrying the wrong fellow has to be better in your mother's eyes than marrying no one at all, and I like you company."

Alec glanced at Claire. "So romantic," he said dryly, trying not to smile. "It's like a Rom-Com come to life."

"I think we're done," Alec said with a shrug. "We did what we came here to do, so unless we want to just hang, we're done!" He glanced at Claire. "I'm sure we could come up with some things to do for a while, though."

Xander resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

Claire blush, catching the glance and averted her eyes, misunderstanding his implication but also feeling fairly certain she misunderstood.

"Let's go home then," Sloan said, "I've got to show my mom my dress, and hope she doesn't lose her mind."

"You look so good in it, she couldn't possibly."

Alec did not understand the blush and the averted eyes, so that left him confused, but he didn't think there was any harm done. He smiled at her. "I hope to get a look at the photos!"

"We'd better get prom pics for all the work we went through," Xander grumbled as he walked toward the door.

"Maybe that's my goal," Sloan teased. After Xander drove her and Claire back to the school parking lot, she took Claire back home and then went to show her mom her actual prom dress. Miraculously, she later reported, her mom didn't hate it. It still was by no means her mother's favourite, and Blair still made a comment about how sleeves might've looked nicer, but that was the worst comment she made.

Alec was quiet during the ride home, staring out the window with a little smile on his face. Whenever Xander glanced at him, he was fairly certain that Alec had little hearts floating around him like a cartoon. Xander bit his tongue and let his brother have this. Even if it was really annoying. They got home without incident, and Xander looked forward to some quiet time while Alec wanted to show Dark and Daizi the pictures he'd taken and tell them about Claire.

Inside, Dark was sitting on the floor with Ivy, colouring with crayons. Bent awkwardly over his page, he held his phone to his ear with his shoulder and didn't notice his sons come home, "That is too soon, I cannot manage it. No, look, the planning alone---Of course I am going to."
