How Green Becomes Wood

Clicking her tongue, Daizi made a curious noise and knelt down beside Xander in the grass. On the other end of the yard, Dark was playing a game with Ivy, so she was fully occupied and not likely to disturb them. "I'll have to look into that, we'll have enough to try it at least."

"I don't think I've ever tried cold soup, but it'd be interesting to try without going to a fancy restaurant," Xander said. He found a few berries and plucked them off carefully.

"I know," She sighed, "I keep saying I will. Maybe this is finally the year, I just worry I'll waste my money on one that doesn't work well." She turned her head to the side, hearing Ivy laugh, "Last year we fed Ivy her first solid food and it was one of my strawberries. Now she's nearly two."

"A really nice one is probably at least kind of expensive," Xander mused. "Maybe we could get one as a family gift to ourselves and all pitch in for one. Could read reviews and stuff and find a good one that's not, you know, uppity-resteraunt level of fancy."

"I'm sure we can afford it without you and Alec contributing financially to it," Daizi assured him, "There's probably a decent one which isn't too expensive. Cooger could probably help us pick the right one."

"Yeah, yeah, it's fine," Xander assured her hastily as he carefully put the berries in the basket to not bruise them. "It's a nice day out. Good berries." He ate a small one because he could.

Xander shrugged. "Those are next logical steps, even if they don't happen for a few years, and even if it's not with this girl. It's not..." He sighed. "It's not something I'm looking forward to, but it is something I have to be prepared for."

Xander blew out a heavy sigh. "I'm dealing with it. I still don't like it, and I have trouble trusting... well, general coupleships, but Claire's nice. I don't think she'd hurt him. And I don't think she'd take over."

"What do you mean by take over?" Daizi asked, still calmly picking berries. Truthfully, she wondered if he was thinking of Emma, but didn't want to jump straight to bringing her up.

Xander hesitated as he considered his words and how to properly communicate his concerns. "That her life won't become all-encompassing. He'd give a lot for her, and I don't want him to forget himself. Or me. I don't want... to be forgotten, I guess. I want him to live his life, but I want to be a part of it, too."
