Conley Brothers

"Of course" she glanced and noticed him looking at the display "oh. Felix buys me nice things whenever he's upset me" she explained as she came to the table with two glasses and the wine "his way of apologizing.." she shrugged a little "white ok? I don't like red much"

"Perfectly fine," Vlad assured her. "Thank you for sharing your space with me. I shall only have a little time before I get back to the boys, but I think they will enjoy cleaning without me underfoot."

"Plus it will give them time to get to know Starnacht" she reasoned "he seems sweet" she poured a glass for him and offered it

"Thank you," Vlad smiled. "I hope they get along alright. This is the first time I have tried to take on more than one at a time." His smile faded and he looked away, remembering the past.

~~

The twins looked around, pleased. "All done when you are done!" chirped one to Starnacht.

She frowned a little and motioned for him to sit "you've..taken on others?" She of course could tell the thought upset him but if she knew maybe she could somehow help ease the pain

-

Star looked up from his work "done I think..look good?" He stepped back to let them see

"Of course, other little fellows in the past. I thought you might have come across a few here and there. Only one chose to stay here in the circus," Vlad said with a smile, all previous expression vanishing as if it had never been. He sat on the edge of the seat.

~~

The twins looked over his work then nodded. "Good! All clean and shiny."

She watched him curiously but decided not to press "you're a good man Vlad" she saif softly "I've always thought so" since she first saw him

-

Star smiled brightly, happy for the approval "what we do now?"

"You do flatter me, Miss Camilla," Vlad chuckled. He sipped his wine, drinking it a bit quickly.

~~

"We have to get ready for bed," one twin told him. "We have to sleep at night."

Camilla noticed and thought maybe inviting him in was making him uncomfortable. She smiled though "just the truth" she said "if you need to get back Vlad don't let me keep you"

--

"Oh...right" Star said and glanced outside, he supposed that made sense, would make getting to know these people difficult..maybe he could try to adapt to being awake part of the day

"I have a few more moments," Vlad assured her. "Unless you need me to leave?"

~~

"Do you always sleep all day?" asked one twin while the other started getting out their sleeping clothes.

She shook her head "No, no" she shook her head "you just seem anxious.." she said but shrugged it off "so what is Star going to do while the rest of you sleep?"

-

Star nodded "yes but..maybe I can stay up sometimes in the sun" he reasoned

Vlad paused, wincing. "I admit... I have not thought of that. Oh dear." He sighed. "I shall have to come up with some chores or lessons for him to do. Perhaps I will try to stay up with him this first night."

~~

"What do you normally do at night?" asked the other twin as the first started changing.

"He'd probably like that. New places can be scary" she said "I'd be happy to keep him company part of the night if it helps..." she offered, not wanting him to get too worn out

--

He shrugged "look for food most times then find new place to sleep...but..now here and Vlad give me food so....I don't know"

The twins considered this. "Do you have any cool skills?" one asked.

~~

Vlad finished his wine and set the glass down carefully. "No, no, thank you, but you need all the rest you can get after your work earlier today with the new addition. Perhaps another night I will take you up on that offer." He rose gracefully. "I should go."

Claudius had been dozing contentedly, unbothered by the infrequent bouts of noise outside. Noise was nothing new to him, and none of it was tortured screams or particularly close. He had no idea where his caged wagon was in relation to the rest of the circus, but it was set back and away a bit, out of the sight of most of the curious circus goers. It was quiet and nice. The people kept him fed and watered and no one had studied him or taken samples or anything invasive. He still wasn't ready to trust any of them, not by a long shot, but maybe, just maybe it would be better than his last master. Even if they still used him for studies, it was still better than there.

"Here? What do you suppose this is?"
"I don't know. Why do you suppose there's this great big tarp over it?"
"Bet you anything it's something valuable!"
"Yeah, gotta be! Let's take a look."

Claudius raised his head and blinked sleepily as footsteps approached his wagon. They were cautious, stuttering footsteps, like someone who'd snuck into somewhere they weren't supposed to be. He paused. How did he know that? He couldn't remember. Then the tarp twitched at the opposite end, and two faces appeared. They peered inside, not seeing him at first.

"It's empty," said a disappointed voice.
"It can't be empty. Who coveres up an empty cage?"
"I dunno, keeping it clean or something?"

He stirred slightly, shifting to get a better look at the pair of faces, and he heard a gasp.

"Wait! It's not empty! Look there in the corner!"
"What is it? Some kind of animal?"
"No, a person."
"Don't look like a person to me."
"Come on. No one's around. Let's get the tarp off for a better look."

The sudden cacophony of the tarp getting flipped back startled him, and he staggered to his hands and knees. What was going on? The pair were struggling to push it up, so they changed tactics and pulled the whole sheet off, instead, tearing one corner where it had been attached. They got it off with more determination than finesse and stood staring inside. Claudius squinted in the light. It was only moonlight and some lights from the circus, but after the darkness of the covered cage, this was so bright! He crouched, his hands held protectively in front of his body, his erect spines and malformed horns standing out in sharp silhouette against the moonlight.

"Whoa! What is that thing?" gasped one of the pair staring at him. He and his companion both looked to young, but still technically of adult size while the gleam in their eyes was clearly childish.

"I think it's a beast of some sort," supplied the friend.

"Nah, can't be! Looks like a man, to me. Probably one of those fake attractions."

The first one had walked around to the end Claudius crouched in. Claudius shifted away nervously, but even in this spacious cage, he only had so far he could go to hide. The man-boy reached in suddenly with a stick and poked at the spines on Claudius' back. He tried to scramble away, but he wasn't fast enough, and the stick struck on squarely. He hissed more in shock than pain.

"Got him! Nah, those are real. Nah, that's a beast for sure or he'd be yelling at us."

The friend picked up a stick as well and poked at Claudius. Claudius scrambled to the center of the cage. This one's stick was shorter, and he was able to avoid it. "Moves pretty funny. What do you think it is?"

"Dunno, but maybe we can finally get our money's worth out of this lame freak show!"

The sticks came faster. Claudius jerked back and forth, instinctively hissing and growling as he tried to dodge. What were they doing? Why were they here? They were laughing at him! Slowly losing any furtiveness in their nature as they chased him back and forth in the cage, their sticks clanging against the iron bars and thrusting through.

Camilla nodded a little and smiled "oh, here.. in case I can't get there in the morning" she took out the other two candied apples for the twins and offered them to him.

--

Starnacht nodded "Yes, want see?" he asked with a smile "Should go outside hough to see better"

--

Adanya heard the commotion as she was out walking with Klondike, a white tiger, much younger than Striker. Frowning she followed the source of the noise, she did not hesitate to act "Hey! Get away from him!" she called as she came running, the tiger loped along with her, he could easily outrun but wouldn't unless told to. The big cat had no leash or restraints.

Vlad smiled as he accepted the treats. "Thank you, Camilla. They shall be so delighted!"

~~

"Sure!" Despite the fact that they were both in their pajammas, the twins happily trotted outside.

~~

The two kids started and whirled around. In the dark, they thought the big cat was a dog. "Security!" hissed one, and they dropped their sticks. "What, are we not supposed to be here?" he asked, playing dumb. "This thing was wide open, so we thought it was another attraction."

Claudius cowered in the center of the cage, eyes wild, sides heaving.

Camilla smiled "i hope so" she said before seeing him to the door "have a good night Vlad..thanks for walking with me"

--

Star came out with them "stay. Watch" he said before goong off into the long grass, dropping to all fours and for a moment they could see the faint white spots then...nothing.

The next instant he tapped them on their shoulders from behind

--

"Do you take me for an idiot?" She snapped "get lost before my tiger gets hungry" she all but growled at the kids.

Klondike picked up on her mood and did growl, tail twitching

Vlad stepped out and bowed to her. "Have a good night, Miss Camilla, and I will see you tomorrow." He turned and walked toward home, smiling faintly.

Leon watched through a crack in the curtains idly. He hadn't meant to spy but had looked up from his work just in time to see Vlad leaving. He wondered if Felix knew?

~~

The twins squealed and flipped around. "What?? How?" they demanded, shocked and eager.

~~

"That's a tiger!" hissed the less talkative one. "Let's get out of here!"

"Right, uh, we'll just go see the rest of the, uh, acts," said the other, sneaking siddeways as the pair tried to slink around Adanya and away.

Felix returned only a couple moments later, just missing Vlad.

"Sorry about that Leon" he hung his hat back on the hook and slipped his jacket off.

--

Starnacht grinned "any darkness, shadow, I can travel in. As long as I fit" he explained

--

Adanya watched them, eyes narrowed.

She waited until they had gone before approaching the cage "are you ok?" She asked, she could see he was scared but hopefully not hurt physically by those boys

"Hmm? Oh, that's alright," Leon said, turning back to his work. To tattle or not to tattle? Perhaps he'd hold onto it for a bit. However long a "bit" might be. "I just hope the food isn't freezing cold."

~~

"Oooooo!" the twins squealed, eyes wide. "Can we do it too? Can you teach us? Can you take us?"

~~

He jerked back, scrambling to the opposite side of the cage with a dark hiss. He barely looked human with his back up against the iron bars, his eyes glinting strangely in the low light.
