How Green Becomes Wood

"An extra body could be appreciated. Huddling up for warmth and all that," she purred. Then she paused, and her eyes narrowed. "This isn't a pitch for me to bring home a cat or two, is it?"

"Well," He murmured, his voice deepening somewhat, "I got snow tires for my truck. So if you're shivering, you just gotta call." He had not been intending to persuade her to adopt a cat, but when she brought it up, he couldn't help but crack a grin, even while he traced his fingers up and down her arm, "It wouldn't do you any harm. I'd deliver one right to your door."

Lex couldn't help laughing, but she didn't pull away her hand. She reached out and put her other hand on his. "You know... Toby is out with friends tonight. Maybe you could give the place a good looking over to see if it's a good place for a cat. I'm especially concerned about my room."

"Really?" Cooger asked. Immediately, he knew what she was proposing. For a brief moment, he considered his options before looking her in the eyes and telling her, "Well it's really important cats have a suitable environment. I'd be glad to make use of my expertise."

The following morning, Cooger made Lex breakfast. It was a good think the Judo competition was being held in the same direction he needed to go.

Next door, although he certainly alerted Daizi to what he had noticed, he said nothing at all, focusing mostly on making breakfast for his family and checking in on how Xander was feeling before his first competition.

Lex was highly flattered and pleased Cooger made her breakfast. She told him he was the first man to have ever done that for her. It was not technically true, two others had, but one hadn't turned out to be a very nice guy after all, and the other just hadn't worked out. Either way, it wasn't fair to compare unless it was to say how he was doing the right things.

Xander, meanwhile, was late to breakfast as he fit in a longer exercise regime that morning. He arrived hungry and ready to go. "I'm feeling okay. Bit on edge. I guess that's normal?" Xander remarked to Dark.

Cooger believed her completely and stayed over for as long as he could before knowing he had to leave. If he showed up to this meet in the same clothes as yesterday, he'd never hear the end of it.

"I believe so, but you are doing something I myself have never done before," Dark admitted. As competitive as he was, none of his hobbies had something like this.

"It is," Daizi answered, "Just try not to get in your head too much, okay habibi? You'll be wonderful."

Lex gave him a parting kiss and told him to cheer enough for them both before letting him out.

"You never get worried when we perform," Alec commented to Xander.

"I know. That's what's making this weird. I should be used to this," Xander grumbled.

Alec rubbed his chin. "I guess in this case, it's just you and the other fellow and no microphone to hide behind or a singing brother to take the attention off you."

"Yes, thank you, that might have something to do with it," Xander said dryly.

"It is not a performance," Dark pointed out, "You can only trust what you know, not what your competition knows, which I do not say to scare you. It is different from what you have done before is all I mean."

"Yeah, it's different," Xander sighed. He ate several bites before saying, "I guess trying new and different things is good, and I'm going to go through with it, but I don't know how I feel about it."

"Maybe you'll enjoy it once you get into it," Alec suggested.

"Good, because I fully mean it." She replied warmly. It was important be she extra supportive like this, in her mind, because she couldn't see him. She couldn't see what he did, and unlike the music, she couldn't experience the bulk of it. When she was much younger, she went to Cooger's wrestling meets, and all she really got out of it were grunts, the squeak of shoes, and whistles. Even with Dark doing his best to describe things, it wasn't something she really 'understood.' She expected this would be similar, and it seemed the only thing she could do was be extra supportive to make up for the fact she wouldn't be able to see any of it.
