How Green Becomes Wood

Dark did his best to keep up the conversation but he was the man he was: his answers were often short and did not provide more personal information than was strictly necessary to answer the question. As was his way, he would accidentally say something vague and foreboding from time to time and he always did his best to include Daizi, while keeping a close eye on Ivy, who unlike any of the other babies, still jingled when she moved around.

When Kyle changed the topic of conversations to her, though, Daizi was much more talkative, especially with how excited he seemed to get about it. Finally she asked, "Have you been to the museum?"

"I went on a field trip when I was eight, once," Kyle told her. "That was a few years ago." He chuckled briefly. "That was actually my last visit. I, uh, I got told it would be best if I never went back." He smiled a bit uneasily. "I don't know if they meant for life, but I was never allowed on the school trips, and I didn't try to challenge it after."

Raymond had finally noticed the bells on Ivy's clothes. He narrowed his eyes as he tried to grab hold of one. between the small bells and his chubby hands, it was quite a challenge for him.

"I'm sure you'd be allowed back in now, just be sure not to touch anything that isn't explicitly allowed to be touched." Daizi replied, guessing he had probably done something wrong in that respect.

When Raymond tried to grab at her, Ivy gurgled in confusion and tried to move way, not understanding why he was reaching for her like that.

Kyle nodded vigerously. "Oh, yes! It's not a good thing to touch things. Or go through doors. Or open boxes. Or... Never mind. Maybe Dinah will come with us on her day off!" He smiled down at Raymond. "Wouldn't you like to go see the museum with Mommy and Daddy?" Then he frowned. "Why are you chasing Ivy-Qadira?"

Raymond was still trying to grab a bell, awkwardly trying to half crawl after her, his hand clasping hopfully.

"I think he likes her bells." Dark commented, watching as Ivy tried to move away from Raymond, smiling in his way about how she turned to him for help. Of course, smiling in his way meant it looked like he wasn't smiling at all.

"The bells are cute," Kyle said. "Must be handy to keep an eye on her while you're trying to do other stuff, right?" He grinned. "When they crawl, man, they are just off! Ray here always wants the stairs. He absolutely cannot do the stairs.

The other adults were gathering their things and their babies, and Kyle checked his watch. "Well, time to get going." He offered Dark and Daizi a handshake. "It was real cool to meet you both! I hope you come again." He scooped up the assorted toys, gave Ivy back hers, and scooped up Raymond. "Time to head home, little man!"

"We have gates so Ivy hasn't managed to breakaway to try the stairs," Daizi said while Dark scooped Ivy up to settle her, "And the bells are definitely necessary for me to keep watch over her."

When the meeting was over and they all made their goodbyes, Dark shook Kyle's hand when it was presented, but Daizi held out her own, unaware Kyle had already done so. "It was good to meet you, thank you for being so welcoming to us."

"Absolutely! It was a blast!" Kyle grinned. He was a little confused by Daizi's hand but only for an instant. He willingly met her where she was, shook her hand, and then began getting Raymond into his carseat. Raymond was not particularly happy about the carseat and grumbled about it like a little old man the entire time.

Terri came over with Tansy in her car seat and touched Dark's arm briefly, telling him and Daizi, "It was wonderful to see you both here! I hope to see you again." She hurried away as Tansy was starting to work her way into a full howl in protest at the car seat.

Dark looked down at Terri touching his arm and subtly moved away so as to not offend as he thanked her and Daizi said they all really enjoyed it. After collecting the diaper bag, Daizi unfolded her cane and took Dark's arm after setting Ivy into her carseat. Normally, she didn't fuss too badly with it, because she was so easy going, but surrounded by so many other upset and grumpy babies affected her, so her parents hurried out to get her into a calmer place. All told, it definitely wasn't the worst baby group they had been to, and Ivy seemed to enjoy it which was the most important part.

After they got into the car, Daizi said, "He didn't know I was blind."

"He had absolutely no idea."

The twins had arrived home only a few minutes before Dark and Daizi. Alec was upstairs doing his homework dutifully. Xander came out of the kitchen with half a sandwich. "How was playdate?" he mumbled around the bread.

"It was fine," Dark answered, helping Ivy to touch the salt before setting her down.

"They were very friendly to us," Daizi answered, "A man called Kyle spoke to us for a very long time and never realized I was blind."

Ivy babbled up at him, stretching upwards.

"They shared very nicely with each other, but she did not like him trying to touch her," Dark said.

"The baby's father said the bells must make it easier for me to keep an eye on her," Daizi grinned, "But I want to get a little bell anklet for her, since she's so mobile now. I think it'll be easier."

"She'll totally figure out how to take it off, but if you teach her taking it off means playtime is over, she's never going to want to take it off," Xander chuckled. He turned to head back into the kitchen, dragging his leg very slowly to not pull it out of Ivy's grasp too hard.
