Looking over her shoulder back at her house and weighing her options, Sloan ultimately gave in, getting in the passenger side of the van without looking at Xander, mumbling a quiet statement of gratitude.
Xander sent a quick text to his father. Some came up. Out longer. Slos with me. Dont worry, all good. Then he turned on his tired van once more and backed out of the drive. With SLoan not giving any immediate indication where she wanted to go, he headed for the quieter back streets heading out of town. That would be a lot more peaceful than driving in town.
Sloan didn't say much on the drive and she kept her eyes looking out the window, her leg never ceasing to bounce. She felt like such an idiot being picked up like this despite not being able to deny it was objectively smarter than driving herself. She didn't even know where she would have went. It didn't matter, she guessed. Anywhere was not there, and being not there was the important bit.
Xander didn't say anything at all until they'd been driving for a good half hour. He turned up a road leading to an overlook and pulled off to park. At night, this place was often used for the usual couples doing annoying, cute couple things, but during the day, it was mostly deserted except for the occasional sight-seer. It was still cold out, so he left the van running for a little longer than necessary before turning it off. A quick scrounge in the back resulted in a healthy stash of not so healthy snacks. He set it down between them and fished out some Twizzlers for himself. He didn't say anything, his offer for food wordless, just waited, staring off over the city.
Until the snacks were between them, Sloan didn't say anything. She didn't even look his way until her curiosity of what he was doing got the better of her, and then seeing them she only shook her head slightly and said, "I can't keep eating that much junk food."
"Alright," Xander agreed. He helped himself to some Twizzlers and stuck the bag back in the back out of the way. Then came out a stress ball, which he handed to Sloan. Then he was still and silent again, staring out at the city. He wouldn't ask Sloan what had happened, but he would listen when she was ready to talk.
"It's this, um, British nanny. From like a... Disney movie, I think," Sloan explained, her voice a bit raw, "She came down in an umbrella and took care of kids. Anyway, she had this magic bag full of anything anybody wanted in it, even if it seemed like the objects couldn't logically fit in there."
"Ah. Wild," Xander remarked. He played with his Twizzler. "Wonder what this British nanny would say about you and me sitting here now?" He pitched his voice higher and did an abhorant British accent. "The scandal! You two shouldn't be alone together! Improperness!"
Despite not thinking it was possible at that moment, Xander made her laugh, and he turned her face away again, "I don't think Mary Poppins is like that. Other British nannies, probably."
"Hmm. So, would she be more like the kind to go," he did his best to make his voice sound like an old granny, still British, and terrible, "Yes, dears, you go on and have your special drive. Don't you worry, I'll cover for you. Wink!"
"Somewhere in between," Sloan laughed, then sniffed, wiping her eye again, but more gently this time, "She only nannied children in the movie, so.... Nanny McPhee, though, she'd be like the first one, at the start of the movie."
"Nanny McPhee... Was that the one with the gnarly face who turned a kid into a goat and... something about a wedding?" Xander asked, stretching back in memory.
"I think it's meant to be like... Once the kids start behaving, she starts looking better?" Sloan replied, looking back out the window, "It's kind of a weird lesson, when you think about it."
"I don't remember. I haven't watched it since I was a kid. I'm pretty sure it improved their relationship with each other and their family. It made them nicer to be around." Sloan replied, "At the start of the movie, I think they tie their cook down to the table."
"That's either really messed up, or some form of kinky, which could also be messed up in a different way," Xander remarked. "Maybe it's a good thing she makes them learn to behave."
