How Green Becomes Wood

"No, it's okay," Daizi replied, sitting upright. While she did, Dark gently brushed her hair back with his fingers, "We were just talking. How was school?"

"Ivy-Qadira, look who are home," Dark said, trying to catch his daughter's attention.

"Oooo, an arty festival! That sounds like so much fun!" Alec grinned, sitting down next to her. "Are you going to go?" He looked between Dark and Daizi, including his father in the conversation.

"Hey, Mini, where's our hello?" Xander called, though he was listening to their conversation.

"We absolutely plan to," Daizi replied, "It sounds wonderful. Ellis was describing it to us as a Music and Arts festival, so they're going to be hiring local bands from the area and the city... I think she said they're planning an outdoor stage suitable for everybody, one smaller indoor stage for more adult-oriented acts, and hopefully one smaller outdoor stage for explicitly family-friendly acts. Then they're going to set up an artist alley where local artists and artisans can sell their work. Of course I suggested they have another artist area for artists who may want to display their work but not sell any of it," As she said this sentence she snaked both her arms around one of Dark's.

Hearing one of the names she knew for herself, Ivy turned and then brightly screeched, "Ann! Ack!" and finally started to hurry over.

Alec snickered at the last bit. "Of course! The display, not sale area. That's a great idea! And won't benefit our specific artist one bit. Although, if they are going to do local musicians, maybe we should get the band back together," he mused playfully.

"Absolutely not," Xander called over his shoulder. He turned slightly so that Ivy could hug his leg if she wanted and braced himself. "Hey, Mini. Are you having fun with the ball?"

Alec laughed. "Seriously, though, that sounds like so much fun!"

"I think it would also encourage other artists who maybe don't feel like their work is ready to be sold to still show what they've made," Daizi said, "They're also discussing having an open mic time."

Ivy did hug Xander's leg and then handed the ball up to him with a happy grin.

"Open mic time would be amazing to see!" Alec breathed, his eyes opening wide. "I love seeing what other people can do. There is so much creativity!"

"Nice ball," Xander said. He reached down for the ball. "Should I throw it?"

"The festival will be sometime in the summer," Daizi said, "I'm not sure the exact dates, they're still working on that part, but it's going well. I guess the Council have been working on it for awhile."

"I don't know," She admitted, "Maybe. I couldn't get my harp all the way to the open mic, though, it's much too heavy to carry for something like that."

Ivy pressed the ball more firmly against Xander, staring up at him.

"I absolutely will not be performing at any open mic." Dark replied resolutely.

Enkidu went running after the ball, which made Ivy laugh and squeeze Xander's leg. When Enkidu came back, he stared at the pair of them with the ball in his mouth, uncertain of who to give it to.

"Shame, but expected," Alec said. "What about displaying your art? For sale or not for sale?"

"Do you want to get the ball, Mini?" Xander asked patiently. Since he was prepared and ready for it, Ivy hugging his leg was not too bad.

"Maybe," Dark replied, "I have not had much time to think about it."

When Ivy went to take the ball from Enkidu, she had no choice but to release Xander's leg. After she took it, she did her best to throw it, and although she wound up her arm with complete dedication, she ultimately barely tossed it far at all.

"I think you should, but it's okay if you don't want to," Alec assured him.

Xander clapped dutifully. "Very nice. Good throw."

"Xander, you should do it, too," Alec called to him.

"What, throw the ball?"

"No, doofus. Well, that too, but enter in something that you make."

"I make clothes, not art," Xander reminded him.

"Clothes are a form of art, if you wear them properly," Dark commented.

"The expectation is to have artisans as well as artists in the market, so you could always sell there," Daizi pointed out.

"Really?" Xander asked. He picked up the ball and chucked it out again. "Nah. If I did that, I probably wouldn't have time to check out the rest of the place with you guys."

"That could work, but, nah. I'm not a good face to face salesman," Xander said.

"I could help," Alec offered. "I would offer a friend's and family discount on my commission."

Xander rolled his eyes. "We'll talk later. I doubt there's even room for me."
